The standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom wrote:"Come," called the old man, "come now or you will be late."
"Late?", said Arthur. "What for?"
"What is your name, human?"
"Dent. Arthur Dent," said Arthur.
"Late, as in the late Dentarthurdent," said the old man, sternly. "It's a sort of threat, you see." Another wistful look came into his tired old eyes. "I've never been very good at them myself, but I'm told they can be very effective."

Back in the Dark Ages (aka early 90's) I was thinking of things to put on a license plate in high school. That's the one I chose because I loved Queen (it comes from the song "Crazy Little Thing Called Love") and I thought I would do it phonetically.
Then flash forward to 1998 when I started at Amazon.com. I had to pick something for an email account so I could order stuff off the website. That's the first thing I thought of. In fact, early passwords back then were "chickenfeet". Bonus points if you know where that comes from
Anyway, in 2004 or so I started joining forums and again I just used it because it was name that was rarely ever taken already. In fact, I've only run across three websites (Pogo, my bank, Tumblr) that I had to put something after it to join.

Re: What your nick means?
Was thinking up a name for a game character years ago. I think the game was The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall.
Grabbed my copy of LotR and browsed through the appendices for inspiratioin. Came across the word palantír, decided to turn that into something a bit more like a person's name.
A bit later I found this here fine forum. Sat there for a while thinking of a nickname since I was new to the internet and didn't have a regular nick yet. Remembered this one, went with it. That was a lot of years ago and I still use the same nick in most places.
I don't even particularly like it, it just stuck with me.
EDIT: Inb4 Oro comes in going PALANTIR PALANTIR PALANTIR PALANTIR

Re: What your nick means?
My love affair with Blind Guardian started with the first Demons & Wizards albums (I still remember playing Everquest and listening to it over and over again, I had no idea metal existed outside Metallica and Ozzy at this point in my life). The next 2 albums I got after this one were Nightfall In Middle Earth and Horror Show. In the Horror Show booklet Schaffer is thanking people for inspiration and he thanks Hansi, Hansis wife and Baby Kürsch?? Im assuming Hansi and his wife were just finding out they were pregnant or not. I thought it was kinda funny at the time so I chose it as my forum name.

My nick is a portmanteau of my two favorite bands at the time. Tough question: can anyone guess what they were?

Mine's not really anything that needs be explained, it's my actual name. I was never a fan of nicks, at least for myself, I even get uneasy when people use my last name, on the phone or stuff. I'm just "Sarah".
I did have a couple though, back in the superearly days. Rowën as I thought it sounded nice, and Dead Cinderella after an unreleased Alanis Morissette song (hence, rare at the time) called "the Death of Cinderella". Although Cinderella doesn't actually die in the song, it's more of an image.
Anyway, I'm just Sarah.

My high school English class was doing popcorn reading of Macbeth and when it was someone's turn to read the lines of a character named Angus the teacher said "Okay you get to read ANGUS because that's such a manly name." He had an extremely deep voice so it sounded amazing when he shouted Angus. I put Lord in front of it because Angus alone is taken by most forums and (I think) the character Angus was a lord. And 1992 is my birth year.

Mine is the city where I was born. I got this nick in real life when I moved to a bigger city. Like Caravaggio, the painter, whose real name is not Caravaggio.
It's in native language and it means "lands where nothing grows". It was the name given to the vegetation that was common here.
