OFFICIAL SETLIST TOPIC

#1 Post by Led Guardian » 23 Sep 2010 02:19

Since it seemed generally agreed that this was a good idea, I present the official setlist topic, the one and only place to post and discuss setlists from Blind Guardian's current tour.

Here's the link to the tour on setlist.fm in case anyone needs help remembering a setlist: http://www.setlist.fm/setlists/blind-gu ... 683c4.html

Actually a news item will be posted today on the website suggesting that we list all the set lists at setlist.fm. That of course doesn't stop people from posting here but setlist.fm is also nice.

It's great to have both at setlist.fm AND here a complete list of all the setlists 8)

As for me, I eject myself from this thread and won't return until I will have seen them mid October! :P

Here in my first post I can tell you guys that I will post the setlist after the concert tomorrow, tomorrow will be the second time I see them live and the first time I didnt know them all that well, I came into BG kinda late somehow, but the show (which was Wacken 2007) blew me away and I am a fan ever since, I am so excited to see them for the first time now that I know them, I will do my best to remember the order of the setlist

I will wait for it eagerly. Even better if songs are posted as they are played. Maybe it sounds silly, I know, it just an (almost) ordinary tour concert. But I waited for this day, after all it is the first BG show after a long break. I feel it's importance and I would like to know about everything that is happening there.

3 songs from the new album, no Curse of Feanor or Ride into Obsession, mostly the same setlist as always. Can't say I'm overwhelmed.

They already said 3 songs is the maximum they're gonna play from the new album in each concert, with Sacred and Wheel of Time as staple. I'm also not sure RiO is even in the rehearsals. I think it's just the 3 played plus Tanelorn. Not sure. Though to be honest, I was expecting the promised Curse of Feanor and Ashes to Ashes. Let's see in the next shows, this was just the first one.

That's because the majority of the people that go to concerts are just casual metalheads going to have a good time, not hardcore fans like us. They don't know the fucking lyrics. They need the old shit to keep them interested too. And yeah, relax man :D. I just basically go to see the band, they can play whatever they want, I love all the songs. Except just very few, and they never play those anyways.

And since when has pandering to the average metalhead been a core part of BG's music?

I'm just saying, you need to satisfy all the people that go to the concert. More than half of them haven't even heard the new album. They just go to listen to the stuff they fell in love with 10 years back. You can't deny them their favorite songs now can you. Anyway, yeah don't expect more than 3 Ateot songs in each concert, Hansi has already said it. And in my opinion 3 is a good number.

Out of 10 songs? 4. And a band does not need to play so much old material to satisfy people. No band that I've seen in concert, whether small, biggish, or big did that. Queensryche played mostly new material at ProgNation '09, and nothing off of Operation: Mindcrime; Dream Theater played half of their new album and then one song from most of their other albums, and they played different songs when I saw them with Iron Maiden; Iron Maiden barely played anything before BNW; and Rush, while they played all of Moving Pictures, played plenty of later material and barely anything pre-MP. And while in many cases I might have liked some other old songs from these bands, I enjoyed their shows a lot, and am glad they didn't just revel in their older days. Satisfying the older fans is not an excuse. Other bands don't feel the need to do that, and bands like IM and Rush still sell out pavilions. People would still go to a BG concert anyway if they had an interest in the band, new songs or old. They need to do what they've always done: move forward.

@ I.C.E.: How was Wheel of Time anyway? How did they deal with the lack of live orchestra?

I'm just saying, whenever I went to a concert of a band that I didn't know very well, I wanted them to play their best OR those songs that I knew, aka the older ones. I went to Epica. Epica like to play most of their newest album in their concerts. I totally hated their newest album. So I totally understand the other side that just wants to hear the old stuff and haven't followed or didn't like the band's progress in years. And those aren't the minority I tell you again. The minority is us who know every lyric of Ateot by now.

I'm not sure it's accurate to call them a majority though. AtEoT is their best-charting album to date. That suggests that there is plenty of support for their new material. They might not know every lyric, but many have heard the album, and even more have heard NiME-ATitM. Anything pre-ATitM is old now too, just not as old as IftOS and the others. Enough people have heard and enjoyed them that they can, I'd say, safely move on from their oldest material almost entirely.

Well man, 3 years back on the Atitm tour less than half knew the whole lyrics to Attws. Fans, especially BG fans tend to linger to the old stuff a lot. At least here in greece they do. You could hear them on Majesty, Welcome to Dying, but in Attws not so much. And it was already 5 years old and arguably the best song of the album.

This tour being the first time I will get to see Blind Guardian live, I'm pretty happy that they (most likely) won't just play the new album. Don't get me wrong, I love At The Edge of Time, but I love Imaginations, Nightfall, and the older ones too. Seeing as most of the audience probably won't have seen them before (my guess, feel free to correct me if there's any facts on this), I think it makes sense to play sort of a "greatest hits"-show - playing the best songs, the release date nonwithstanding.

This will be my 2nd time seeing BG and I am kinda in the middle with this set. Would love seeing Traveler, Another Holy War and Punishment Divine. I was really hoping for at least one more song off the new album though. Plus dropping Imgainations and Time Stands Still sucks imo, much rather have them take out LotR and And the Story Ends. but oh well still a good set. I would go home satisfied with this. and I also wanna know how did Wheel of Time sound live?

People who have seen them many many times also need to remember that there are many people who have never seen them before so they try to cover all bases.

Indeed, we mustn't forget the newcomers. Yeah probably we will see much more variation later on.
Now I'm riding through the air
Going to where no one dares
On the way I cross the line forevermore.
For once in life, I do not care
Nothing matters, now I dare
On the ride I'll cross the line
Forever to be free
