Songs about videogames

All talk about Blind Guardian, including discussion about tour dates, etc.

Songs about videogames

#1 Post by The Rider Of Rohan » 31 Jul 2010 10:40

Now that BG recorded the song Sacred 2 they've finally added videogames to the topics they sing about.

Now, would it be a good or a bad thing if BG would do more songs about videogames? And if so, which ones would be likely candidates?

And yes, I do realise that this would mean that Hansi has actually got to start playing them. :P

Since Hansi played just one video game in his whole life, there´s only this one he can write about: RABBIDS GO HOME :D
He was really impressed by this game :P
The Lights are up,
Now let the play begin!

Yeah, Hansi would really need to be taught by André and Marcus. A 15 minute epos about Wii Sports wouldn't do either.

Maybe a game that has a good story. Metal Gear Solid anyone? It would make an awesome 10+ minute epic song :D

Dude, go out and listen to NWA's Straight Outta Compton. It's as close to GTA as you could wish for.

Metal Gear. Since it has an awesome story it will be a good candidate for a +10 minute epic. :P

This would be quite tempting, indeed. I'd love to see them composing a song about the "Gothic"-series. It has a great story and fits their fantasy-oriented themes.
Free are those who walk away from setting suns
Free are those who laugh at chains that held them bound
Free are those who conquer in vain but won't stop to run
Battered and down you pick up your pieces
To rise as one!

It's nigh impossible Hansi will write lyrics for a video game again, since he doesn't play them as some1 already said. Maybe if Marcus or Andre tell him some interest game story? Dunno. Anyway, Thief series would be cool to write lyrics about. I also agree with Gothic, and maybe Deus Ex.
Now I'm riding through the air
Going to where no one dares
On the way I cross the line forevermore.
For once in life, I do not care
Nothing matters, now I dare
On the ride I'll cross the line
Forever to be free

The Legend of Zelda

Maybe Castlevania, Devil May Cry or even Assassin's Creed?

They should write a song for Tetris. It would be awesome to hard-drop a tetromino simultaneous with a note of the song and sync it with Hansi's screams.

Just kidding. :P But maybe their music would fit well in Lord Of The Rings Online.
What started in the underworld,
It should be finished here and now.

Sacred Worlds apart (by the way, the new lyrics clearly tell us it's the undead warrior the main focus of the song), "Otherland" from A twist in the myth sounded very videogame inspired to me.

Otherland is about the book-series of the same name by tad Williams. Bu that's aboutsome kind of virtual world.

Maybe they could do a song about diablo or something. André already said once in an interview that its atmosphere influenced him on Blood Tears.

They could make a song about videogames that doesn't specify a game.

For example, Iron Saviors song "Cyber Hero".

Hmm, I am in the mine, after all those bugs. The mine cart thingy. Lots of fun this game

Bright Eyes doesn't have anything to do with video games. The Bard's Song was inspired from the game A Bard's Tale though.

Eh? Bright Eyes about fear and insecurity of a boy misunderstood by his parents, and is loosely based on the Never Ending Story. It acts as a build-up to the actual tale (And The Story Ends) in which the boy finds a mirror in his bedroom which leads him to a different world.

You might be referring to the video they shot for it in which the boy played on a snes, but it has little to do with the lyrics (just like Mr Sandman has little to do with clowns, for example).

Then don't believe everything you read (unless it was posted by me). 8)

Just read the lyrics, there's nothing to indicate the videogames-connection.

Oh, and the entire artwork of IFTOS was based on the Bright Eyes/And The Story Ends-tale too.

I am pretty sure it's a mirror. After all, if it was a book then what's the relevance of 'jump through the mirror leave fear behind'? Plus, the artwork clearly depicts a mirror in the boy's bedchamber, not a book.

The green boy looked through a mirror and saw into to boys bedroom. The boy didn't have a mirror, he had the book which he stole from a bookseller. Also, he wasn't in his bedroom, he was in the schools attic.

I think you are confusing the song with the Never Ending Story. There's no bookstore nor school in Bright Eyes and ATSE.

FIFA10 commentary, from an American perspective at least, is fantastic. A song could be made on the commentary alone.

I'm talking about the Neverending Story. Read the first post on it.
In that case I'm just a wee bit confused. This thread started out asking if they should do something about videogames, until someone said that Bright Eyes is about the dangers of games. Then it went on to say that this isn't true and that Bright Eyes was about a story Hansi invented about a boy finding a mirror in his bedroom and jumping through it. It's nice to know that you know what happened in Never Ending Story, but I don't see the relevance of that in this particular thread.

Oh well, back to the thread.

Now, how about Lost Odyssee? It's not one of the most well-known rpg's, but imo it's the best. The characters are so deep they could easily do a song about it. I'm sure Kaim would make a great subject.

the only videogame series i could see them writing a song about would be The Elder Scrolls, and even that is really iffy. other than that: no, just no.

Baldur's Gate trilogy. Incredible games, perfect material for a song.

For example, Iron Saviors song "Cyber Hero".
Except that those lyrics suck hard.

If they were to do a song about a game, it should be about the story of the game, not just "wee, look at me, I am playing a game!". Candidates could be Diablo, Starcraft or Warcraft.

Did someone apply the "Half-Moron" template to your base creature?

Baldur's Gate and The Elder Scrolls.
I am not sure if it is a good idea to write songs about video games, neither what is the best story in a game, but I would prefer a song about this two series (Baldur's Gate I and The Elder Scrolls III, in particular) because I played them much and love their worlds, characters and atmosphere.
Just keep in mind, this world is sacred.

Why on Earth not?

I have written a concept album about Diablo, which I personally think is highly successful. :)

I agree with you there, although if there's one band that could make it work, it's BG. The song IFTOS was basically "wee look at me I'm reading a book" and that one was great.

Most of today's games don't have a deep and unique story, worlds are not really immersive, they are all about breathtaking graphics and action. You may not agree and you may be right because I played only a few of recent games. I didn't play Sacred but from what I've heard it is a kind of games that I described. For this reason Sacred Worlds doesn't have a spirit that is present in songs based on books, it is less living, if you know what I mean (sorry, my English is bad). I don't want BG to write songs about hack and slash games.

On the other hand, real classics like Baldur's Gate, The Elder Scrolls or Thief are worth of making a foundation for a song, IMHO.
