George R R Martin
Hello I am thinking about reading a book by George R.R. Martin.
So is there anyone who has read some of his books and could recommend it?
Are there some books I should read before others?

Out of the mist it's coming closer now
It never rains -- it pours on me
So let the saints
Set up the courtyard, the unpleasant cage
The obvious point is I'm insane

They say that there's a broken light for every heart on Broadway.
They say that life's a game, then they take the board away.
They give you masks and costumes and an outline of the story
Then leave you all to improvise their vicious cabaret...
Still the goddamn Batman.

Here's one thing I'm wondering about Martin. He claims he wrote an entire book, and then split it in two. Now we got the first part, but what about the second one? Apparently, he already wrote it. The only reason why he didn't publish it along with the most recent book is because it would have made the whole thing too long. So if he was already done, what is he doing with Dance of Dragons? I'm really starting to suspect that he gets some sort of sick pleasure from torturing his fans.

The thing was, I heard that he didn't finish writing the whole book. He was writing it and then realized it would be too long. So he decided to split it by location South vs. North/other lands/sea. He concentrated on the South people for Feast for Crows while leaving the rest untouched until he finished the Feast for Crows bookBiedrik wrote:Here's one thing I'm wondering about Martin. No news about the next ice and fire book, but good news nevertheless:

I have some exciting news to share.
(But please, guys and gals, don't get TOO excited. This is what it is, and so far that's all it is, so don't make any assumptions).
HBO has just exercised its option, and purchased the television rights to A GAME OF THRONES.
For those of you who don't know Hollywood, an option gives a production company the right to buy a property (a book, a screenplay, whatever) at a certain agreed-upon price for a certain period of time (a year, six months, whatever). When that time runs out, they can let the option lapse, renew the option, or exercise the option and buy the property. The last is what HBO has just done.
What they have NOT done is greenlight the project. A GAME OF THRONES remains in development. They're still budgeting, still looking at locations (Spain and the Czech Republic at present, I hear). No decision has been reached, so any celebration would be premature. In Hollywood it is always best not to assume something is going to happen until it actually happens.
Even so... this is a very encouraging sign, and one that suggests a continued high level of enthusiasm and commitment for A GAME OF THRONES at HBO.
So keep your fingers crossed.

I started reading the series, and I think it is excellently written, but I get too attached to characters for that kind of book. I sometimes focus a lot on one character that sort of 'carries' the book for me, and when that one dies it's quite bad... it ended up with me refusing to read any further at around three quarters of A Game of Thrones. I've been told later that it's not good to get attached to anyone in these books... it serves the realism I suppose. A shame for me though
But a greatly written series anyway.
*eyes her ramblings* Yeah, that's what happens if you should long have been to bed and need to get up within the next three and a half hours. Bleh.

By the end of A Storm of Swords all but one of my favorite characters from the first three books was dead. I settled on new favorite characters, but I swear, if Martin kills off Jaime or Tyrion, I am done.
Ok, I'll keep reading even if he does.
Spectacular series.

Winter is coming!

Huge, Huge News
HBO has given the production order.
They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.
It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.
It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.
More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.
Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

Just finished A Game of Thrones yesterday and immediately ordered the rest of the series. compared to most of the books i picked up this one is by far one of the best since The lies of Locke Lamora (by Stephen Lynch sp?) or the Mistborn series (by Brandon Sanderson). Cannot wait for UPS come!
If what I say is incoherent or odd it's probably because i am tired, inebriated, or just feeling silly

Can't wait.

After reading a book the second time you'll usually remember a lot more detail, a lot longer.
