favorite albums of 2011?

#1 Post by Bender B. Rodriguez » 24 Dec 2011 04:47

the ones i'm digging the most so far are the following,in no particular order.

Across Tundras - Sage
Ramesses - Possessed by the rise of Magik
Crowbar - Sever the Wicked Hand (this one is a fucking killer)
Ghost - Opus Emonymous
Wolves in the Throne Room - Celestial Lineage
Man Man - Life Fantastic
Bloodiest - Descent
Moonsorrow - Varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden maassa
Abysmal Dawn - Leveling The Plane Of Existence
Death Grips - Exmilitary

i the personal big letdowns department,i'd say Megadeth recorded a rather...boring album...Lazarus A.D. didn't even come close to their killer debut album...as for the new Opeth,...i still don't know if i barely like it or if i just don't care...meh

good year overall.

Symphony X - Iconoclast: Even though I think it's a weak album for Symphony X, it's still an amazing metal album and really has some quality production.

Turisas - Stand Up and Fight: Just started to listen to them this year and this was one of the first albums I bought all year. Really nice concept and execution. Just a fun album

Lunatic Soul - Impressions: If you like atmospheric music, then there is no better album this year. Catchy music that works to just ease the mind.

Nightwish - Imaginaerum: A real step up from Poet and the Pendulum; the best vocal performances I've heard all year and great lyrics to boot. The music has a wide range from celtic to arabic and is good for many-a-listens

Devin Townsend - Deconstruction: What an incoherent jumble of an album, that's still one of the most impressively mixed set of ideas on any album ever. The man's a genius...a mad, mad genius. Also, reward for the best named song all year (if you know the album then you know what I mean...)

Ics Vortex - Storm Seeker: Honestly I could give this album a recommendation just solely for the title track, but something about the entire package...it really makes u feel like your in a storm the entire time.

Myrath - Tales of the Sands: Some crazy arabic-themed songs that will be stuck in your head for weeks. A little bit less proggy than their last album, but still a worthy addition to this list

Honorable Mentions:

Iced Earth - Dystopia
Korpiklanni - Ukon Waka
Alestorm - Back Through Time
Opeth - Heritage
Rammstein - Mien Land (I know it's only a single but its so catchy
Bow down in the platinum maze
Twilight cathedrals spread the system plague
Forging sacred thrones in the void unseen
Merciless judgement in the church of the machine

Damn, I should keep a list, how can I remember all the stuff that interests me that came out this year? :P

Off the top of my head, I'd go with Dream Theater, Nightwish and Iced Earth.

Some albums released in 2011 that I enjoyed a lot, in alphabetic order:

Faun - Eden
Jon Porras - Undercurrent
Jozef van Wissem - The Joy that Never Ends
Sólstafir - Svartir Sandar
Steven Wilson - Grace for Drowning
SubRosa - No Help for the Mighty One
Tenhi - Saivo
Tim Hecker - Ravedeath, 1972
You charge each other for the time and breath it takes to say 'good morning',
But the truth is slowly dawning -- things are getting out of hand,
We all pursue our shattered dreams along the roads to our own ruin --
Watch our empires sink and wash away like castles made of sand.
And so cast off the lies that are your lives and find the truth within.

2011 was an impressively good year for music, so I'll need a little time to share my list.
Still, the highlight for me is probably Diamond Mine, by King Creosote & Jon Hopkins.

I've heard 9 new albums this year, and 3 singles. I don't have a particular order in mind yet, but I do know that the new Theocracy is my favourite of 2011.
The albums in alphabetical order:

Alestorm - Back Through Time
Dragonland - Under the Grey Banner
Edguy - Age of the Joker
Evergrey - Glorious Collision
Falconer - Armod
Hammerfall - Infected
Rhapsody of Fire - From Chaos to Eternity
Stratovarius - Elysium
Theocracy - As the World Bleeds

Singles:

Gamma Ray - Skeletons & Majesties
Grave Digger - Ballad of Mary
Rammstein - Mein Land

Stuff I still need to check out:

Avantasia Live DVD
Fullforce - One
Power Quest - Blood Alliance
ReinXeed - 1912
Sabaton Live DVD
Van Canto - Break the Silence

This year's best album for me (it's the first time in years that I can't listen anything else than it for four weeks in a row) is without a shade of doubt:
  • Omnium Gatherum - New World Shadows
Somewhere below it are the following:
  • Primordial - Redemption at the Puritan's Hand (but I suspect they could re-release a compilation of their worst songs and I still would love it)
Sólstafir - Svatir Sandar (but I suspect that these guys could release even hip-hop and I would like them anyway because of the hats)
    Insomnium - One for Sorrow
Mammifer - Mare Descendrii (but I suspect that Aaron Turner could record the noises of a dying pig and release them as an album and I would love it anyway)
    Suidakra - Book of Dowth
And I also liked the new Iced Earth more than I expected, but I'm not sure if I would call it one of the best 2011 albums...

Arkona - Slovo
Absu - Abzu

Ulver - War of the Roses
My Dying Bride - The Barghest O' Whitby

Honorable mentions :

Iced Earth - Dystopia
Skeletonwitch - Forever Abomination
Primordial - Redemption at the Puritan's Hand
The Devil's Blood - The Thousandfold Epicentre (will probably break the top 10 after a few more spins)

LULZ of the year :

Metallica & Lou Reed
Morbid Angel

favorites:
Amorphis - The Beginning Of Times (where do they get all those epic melodies?)
Communic - The Bottom Deep (great melodic thrash/power metal with brilliant riffs and strong atmosphere)
ICS Vortex - Storm Seeker (really interesting album, so song sounds like the others)
Mercenary - Metamorphosis (never thought that I would like a metalcore record that much)
Nightwish - Imaginaerum (for me it is the best Nightwish album ever, except song of myself which is only half as good as it could be)
Powerwolf - Blood Of The Saints (Dead Boys Don't Cry and Sanctified With Dynamite are simply brilliant)
Sabaton - World War Live (kick ass live record with almost every song that was played on the tour)
Septic Flesh - The Great Mass (epic, dark, brutal, best death metal album of the year)

disappointments:
Children Of Bodom - Relentless, Reckless, Forever (too short and nothing new at all)
Edguy - Age Of The Joker (Tinnitus Sanctus was great but this is just uninspired and bland, except The Arcane Guild and Breathe)
Machine Head - Unto The Locust (in comparison to the blackening completly irrelevant with the worst machine head ballad and the worst machine head song (pearls before the swine) ever)
Trivium - In Waves (from great thrash metal to boring metalcore, only few solos and boring song structures)

best concerts:
Amorphis
Blind Guardian
Iron Maiden
Metallica (with awesome setlist)
Nevermore (a few weeks before they disbanded :( )
Powerwolf
Sabaton
Symphony X

worst concerts:
Edguy (half the songs came from age of the joker what resulted in an atmosphere of boredom, Tobi forgot lyrics for Tears Of A Mandrake, started to laugh randomly during Land Of The Miracle, only excuse for postponing the concert was "We had to spent additional money")
Megadeth (Dave seemed drunk/stoned and was only barely audible + very bad sound)

I've got a bunch of new cds this year, so it's rather hard to pick my favourite ones, but I'll give it a try:

The Devil's Blood - The Thousandfold Epicentre (I was blown away after I saw them live and was not disappointed when I bought this brilliant album)
Orchid - Capricorn (The Black Sabbath reunion has to work really hard to beat this masterpiece of classic doom metal)
Iced Earth - Dystopia (Stu is an awesome singer, THAT'S how an Iced Earth album has to sound)
Powerwolf - Blood of the Saints (We drink your blood, when the midnight sky is red... can't get these lines out of my head)
Suidakra - Book of Dowth (Along with Primordial the best folk/pagan/whatever metal band, tight win against the new Primordial output)

Shows, yeah, hard to say, actually I loved all of them, except for Van Canto in Geiselwind. It was the third time I saw them, last year with BG, during an open air festival and then.
They're quite ok, when they play covers and you're drunk so you can sing along, but more than 60 minutes rakkatakka and even cheesier lyrics than Freedom Call and Timeless Miracle together? NO!!

in no particular order:
Norther - Circle Regenerated. Bit pants tbh, only liked a coupla songs off it, they suck without Petri
Amorphis - Beginning of Time - was ok, liked Skyforger much better though, this one';s a lot like that and a bit....well...samey
Turisas - Stand up and Fight. Was awesome!
Nothgard - Warhorns of Midgard. Really not bad for a first album, got some good tracks on there, will be interested to see what they come up with from now on
Moonsorrow - long Finnish title - totally epic, nuff said
Faun - Eden. Because it can't all be metal....
Nightwish - Imaginaerum. Loved it, will be interesting to see the film next year too :)
Children of Bodom - Relentless Reckless Forever. Like Bodom, don't love 'em. But some good tracks for the gym
Falkenbach - Tiurida. Best track 'where his ravens fly'.
Korpklaani - Ukon Wacka. Well....it's drunken Finns. That is all.
Black Stone Cherry - Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. 8)

Already in 2012 I am looking forward to new stuff from Eluveitie, and hopefully Finntroll and Ensiferum if there's any justice...!
.......and you deserve us, Leviathan

Steven Wilson's A Grace For Drowning and
Neal Morse's Testimony 2
Are not only my definitive favourites for this year, but will probably make it favourites for the decade. Really great stuff, much better than the last couple of records from both of them.

Also quite cool this year:
Insomnium - one for sorrow
Amorphis - the beginning of times
I, too, am a neat guy. And I, too, am just a love machine
Also, a stupid europeoid with snake primitive language

i can't believe i'm the only one praising Ghost's debut Opus Eponymous,it's so fucking good...nothing that hasn't been done yet,but a great "classic heavy metal" album,it takes influence from the 70's sound mixed with ..let's say,Mercyful Fate.awesome.

Well, I would. I think it's an awesome album. The reason why I didn't put it on my list is that it was released in Europe already in 2010. So it wouldn't make any sense if I'd say it's one of the albums of the year 2011... But yes you're right. Though there are some Megadeth influences, too . First time I heard Ritual I just thought "You take a mortal man...". But anyways, Opus Eponymous is one of the best albums I've listened to in the last few years.

Well, I quite like the new Saxon-Album Call to Arms. The there was the official debut of me mates Circle of Silence, who delivered just about one of the most amazing power metal albums of the last years with "The Blackened Halo". And I quite enjoyed Hell - Human Remains, as well.

ehm, maybe ...

Arch & Mateos - Sympathetic resonance
Fair to Midland - Arrows and anchors
3 - The ghost you gave to me

and, ok, because I still give them that much credit :

Omnium Gatherum - New world shadows

Yeah, that's about it, as far as 'hard' music is concerned.

THE letdown of ages is the latest Opeth, while the new Symphony X is nothing more than a less than solid repetition of Paradise Lost.
