Looking for bands like Wintersun, without cookiemonster vox

#1 Post by Andreas » 09 Sep 2011 16:13

So I was listening some Wintersun last night, and I found the music really awesome. But I just can't get used to harsh vocals. So I was wondering if you guys know some bands that deliver this fast, in-your-face melodic metal with keyboards, but without grunts and such? I'm looking for bands like Wintersun, Ensiferum and Euphoreon (unknown but maybe some of you guys like this), but then without those vocals.

Are you familiar with Kiuas? They mostly use clean or semi-clean (read: very very raspy) vocals. They are very energetic, super-melodic and use keyboards plenty.

EDIT: I got around to using the search function, and apparently you are familiar with them. Oh well, maybe someone else isn't, so I'll leave those links there. :p

Thanks for the suggestions, the only band I'm not that familiar with of those is Elvenking. Well, I own their acoustic album, but which album would you recommend?

As for Kiuas, how is their earlier work? I'll check those links, see if there's other stuff on it than Lustdriven.

EDIT: first youtube link is awesome. Gonna check the other 2 real soon, thanks

Yeap, the two upper links are from their debut The Spirit of Ukko, and the last from their third album The New Dark Age. Can't really tell which of them I prefer, both are damn fantastic albums. Especially the debut is more aggressive overall than Lustdriven.

I only know the first Elvenking, and that one was great.

Yeah Heathenreel is awesome but it does have harsh vocals on it. 10 whole seconds of it or something along those lines, but still, a purist like Andreas will surely not be pleased if we don't inform him about that matter

That's good, I can handle ten seconds. Will have a closer look at the two aforementioned albums.

10 secs is about right. The way I remember it they were on a song which sounded very Merciful Fate like, so they werent that out of place.

Ever tried Hastings by Thy Majesty? The Hasting album might be close too.

Fast, keyboards, melodic, in your face, clean vocals?

Stating the obvious, but:

or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yeRlWd9YOQ
You can skip the slow intro and start at 0.50

Of course, not all of their songs qualify, but you should find enough of them on the first three to four albums.

Have fun! Haven't listened to the first of the two in years but find that I still really enjoy it :)

Will have a closer listen to Thy Majestie (first listen makes me want to listen more), Sonata Arctica is awesome, one of the first metalbands I liked.

Tyr? Turisas?
Or maybe some Falkenbach might appeal to you.

Or just get used to the cookie monster vocals, I did eventually and now I really like them 8)

You could try Dim Carcosa by Ancient Rites too. The vocals arent clean, but theyre not cookiemonster either. More like Elmo with a bad cold.
