New Moonsorrow album out...

#1 Post by Palantyre » 26 Feb 2011 14:36

...just in case anyone who might be interested didn't know already.

It's called Varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden maassa which translates to "As shadows we walk in the land of the dead".
At first I thought they've gone in a drastically less epic direction since the hour-long album has a whopping 7 tracks, but it turned out three of those are just interludes of roughly a minute and a half each, so false alarm there.

Only on my second listen-through at the moment, but my first impression is very positive; this is certainly top-notch Moonsorrow. I don't think a whole lot of fans will be disappointed. The intro of the track Huuto sounds kinda out-of-place on a Moonsorrow album and the song has some surprisingly modern sounding synth things going on, but it's not bad imo.

Not sure if this will beat Verisäkeet, but as far as first impressions go it's not terribly far behind.

I was trying to remember who it was on this forum who doesn't get Moonsorrow at all. Thanks for the reminder.

Well, there's not much to get. Imo songs just drag on and on, vocals are terrible, sound is messy and they're boring live.

I totally agree with you. Except for the live part, since I've never seen them and never will.

Well, I saw them once at Wacken because ppl said they were truly spectacular. They were wrong. Sound was completely fuzzy, as if someone just turned on a vacuum cleaner. I walked away after five minutes in order to persue an interesting goal. Beer.

What's there to get?

People kept telling me about how amazing this band was and I gave it a chance, twice even. And all I got was bored by their random meandering. So, what is it that I am missing?

Moonsorrow-fans have the strange tendency of a) liking a crappy band and b) accusing those who don't like it of "not getting it". Kinda like those redneck women who used to go on Jerry Springer because they had sex with their teenage sons, then screaming "Y'all don't know me, y'all don't know me!" when the audience starts laughing.

Guys, Moonsorrow sucks donkeyballs. Get over it.

I'm not "accusing" anyone of anything. The way you experience music is merely not compatible with what Moonsorrow has to offer, which is mainly a certain kind of atmosphere. It's not a fault in you or the music, it's simply the way it is. No need to get so edgy about it.

Yeah, Moonsorrow's songs don't have complex structures or catchy lines or whatever, they just have heaps of atmosphere. I can't explain it better than that, you get it or you don't. I do. Simple as that.

EDIT: Also, there's nothing for me here to "get over". I'm quite happily listening to the album at this very moment. You want to listen to Lady Gaga instead, feel free.

I've only checked out Huuto on youtube, but it's promising thus far! Definitely getting it.

How suprising... It seems that the Moonsorrow-fans have alot in common with fans of those bands that I don't like.

I haven't listened to the new Moonsorrow album yet. I'm hoping it will be an improvent since I haven't liked their recent albums as much as I love Voimasta ja Kunniasta or Kivenkantaja. The song tulimyrsky is one of their highest marks though.

Exciting, can't wait to check this out. I enjoy the general roughness of their sound - the atmoshpere is pleasing to me. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion though.

Their latest album was a major disappointment to me. I expected to hear the band evolving and trying out some other things. Instead they managed to strip away all that was dynamic and epic about their music, the songs draaaaaaag on and draaaaaag on some more, and don't seem to reach a climax at all. A letdown in every possible way for me, a shame really.
