I kinda agree... Days of Rage is horrible, Anthem is quite nice and the singing reminds of Matt...

Bland and boring mostly. Schaffer just can't seem to come up with interesting riffs anymore. And both songs are very formulaic and repetitive. I like the new singer, though.

Wow, "Days of Rage" is incredibly disappointing :(
I hope the next Demons & Wizards album doesn't suck this much.

Well, at least D&W has a decent singer.

Hansi needs to forget about Demons & Wizards, Schaffer is pretty much done as a songwriter and is quite obvious for anyone that Jon "triplets" Schaffer lost the little talent he had.

Theres a new studio report online. Stu does some Halford-screams, which were pretty awesome. And am I the only one who thinks Stu's clean vocals sound a bit like Volbeat?

Just listened to anthem, I like the music but I feel like stu is trying to sound like barlow abit much, -NO ONE- can replace barlow. Schaeffer shouldn't have sought a replacement... but a voice. Although Stu does seem like the guy to go to if you're looking for a replacement, still... not trying to discredit him as a vocalist, you just can't simply replace a guy as gifted as Barlow, you're going to fail at that endeavor no matter what.

I miss the Ripper - wish they didn't split as they did.

Hell no, Hansi's lyrics are precious, he could probably add awesome lyrics to the sound of babies clanging pots and pans.

The song Dystopia is on YouTube.

After a few listenings, I can say that this song brings a real feeling, I actually like it.. I really hope this is not the best song on the album

One bonus track is revealed, a cover for The Mob Rules, by the mighty Black Sabbath..

Samples for all tracks are on Itunes (you need to have Itunes to listen to 1:30 for each song)

there are the lenghts of the songs on the new album, it's disappoiting (I was listening to "Boiling Point sample and really liked it, then I realised it is just 2:46)

Dystopia 5:49
02-Anthem 4:54
03-Boiling Point 2:46
04-Anguish of Youth 4:41
05-V 3:39
06-Dark City 5:42
07-Equilibrium 4:30
08-Days of Rage 2:17
09-End of Innocence 4:07
10-Tragedy And Triumph 6:41

Here is the link for making a pre-order of the new album or just clicking on "View on Itunes" to preview songs. Enjoy. This album is going to be better than Crucible and Framming, but well it's never gonna be like 90's and early 2000 :(

that is a really short cd, if those times are correct.

edit* it clocks in at 43 minutes or so, so it really isn't that slow, just looks like it

Dystopia Lyrics

Enter the nightmare, this future does implore
Hijack your city state, a prison nothing more.
Rounded up like cattle you're forced in to the trains
Nothing that you've ever known will bring you so much pain

If you try to resist me you'll find me inhumane
But if you just submit you'll live your life a slave
Your love, your servitude will medicate your pain
With our technology, we'll always keep you safe.

Micro-chipped like dogs, their thoughts are not their own
All that's left of human kind is now in their control
Planned out through centuries, patient and contrived
Pray on man's naivety, gullible and blind

If you try to resist me you'll find me inhumane
But if you just submit you'll live your life a slave
Your love, your servitude will medicate your pain
With our technology, we'll always keep you safe.

[Chorus]
The nightmare unfolds before my eyes
I will resist till the end of time
A spirit born free has to break these chains
We're lost, we must find our way.
We'll find our way.

They say that you're a danger to everything that's pure
There are to many of you, they're offering the cure
Swift extermination if you refuse the game
Arrested development, you're vaccinated fates

If you try to resist me you'll find me inhumane
But if you just submit you'll live your life a slave
Your love, your servitude will medicate your pain
With our technology, we'll always keep you safe.

[Chorus] x2
The nightmare unfolds before my eyes
I will resist till the end of time
A spirit born free has to break these chains
We're lost, we must find our way.

We must find our way.
We'll find our way

Sooo... with the final product at hand, does Jon Schaffer still have some good riffs in him? :P I'm actually mostly concerned about the next Demons & Wizards LP. Iced Earth in itself has always been hit & miss for me. I do love Alive in Athens though.

Well I listened to this album over and over again last night at work and im blown away. It seems that John Schaffer does still have a few tricks up his sleeve and hes still got it when it comes to picking out vocalists. This will definitely be in the mp3 player for some time.

He also decided guitar solos in more than 1 or 2 songs was a good thing! I agree!

Yeah, just hearing now Boiling Point, to a distracted and casual listener it could look like Barlow is singing, and then Ripper joins in to do some screams...... eerie!!!!

i got to say im loving the album (based on what i could listen to on youtube). I had some reservations on Stu but after listening to the songs i got to say i was blown away by him. There was some disappointments though and that was "Days of Rage" and "Boiling Point". Not that those 2 songs suck, i love those songs, but its the length of them that disappoints me.

Honestly after listening to this album over and over again for 2 days the only song I dont care for is anguish of youth. It just doesn't seem to fit the albums vibe, but I could be wrong.

3.Iron Will
4.Boiling Point
5.V
6.Tragedy and Triumph
7.Anthem

Ok.. my first listen.. writing as it goes:

Dystopia - pretty damn good song, and I guess I was wrong with judging Stu , as he sounds great here

Anthem - Still a tad too slow to be really good, but not exatly bad either, just a mediocre slow song

Boiling Point - really fast, I would have preferred a bit more melody, but the song is ok nonetheless.

Anguish Of Youth - The parts where Stu sings "softly" (at the start and in between) are annoying me because he sounds so damn whiney, which is sad because he CAN sing with passion when he puts a bit more power in his voice and that makes it a pretty good song when he does. Reminded me of The Dark Saga songs a bit.

V - nothing really special, not really great but definately not bad either... just an average song.

Dark City - This song is quite good, I really like this one, well balanced.

Equilibrium - Sadly this song cuts off after the first minute, so I can't judge well.

Days Of Rage - Still quite possibly the worst song Schaffer ever wrote, I get pretty annoyed by it.

End Of Innocence - Definately not the same song as on the new Symphony X, and definately not as good. But also not a bad song. Could have use a bit of power though.

Soylent Green - Bonus Track... Feels a bit short, but in my opinion one of the better tracks on this album.

Iron Will - Strong and solid track, same as with Soylent Green: A bonus track that is actually better than almost half of the "normal" tracks.

Tragedy and Triumph - Quite a nice track with a bit of an epic feeling to it.

So, three really good songs in my opinion:
Dystopia
Dark City
Iron Will

Five songs that are ok, but could have been better:
Tragedy And Triumph
Soylent Green
Boiling Point
End Of Innocence
V

And three mediocre/bad songs, out of which Days of Rage is possibly the worst song written by Schaffer ever.
Anguish Of Youth
Anthem
Days of Rage

Exactly what I think about the three songs you liked, Iron Will with time is growing.. I'm really impressed, there's a special feeling on this one, what the hell shaffer? why is it a bonus track could've easily replaced V or one of the ballads.

What I definitly don't like is the production of this record. Songs like Anthem could sound far better if there were a proper production instead of this dry and sterile sound.
Also I think that there is not a single chorus on this record that sticks out of a song (except Days Of Rage maybe). It's just a verse and than a chorus that sound extremely similiar, no bridge no big differences in the vocal melody. Maybe this makes the album a grower, but after the first listen I think it is rather annoying.
And maybe Stu should use his full range in every song. Now he's just using his low, raspy voice or the high screams. In Into Eternity he often used his full spectrum, what made their songs a lot more diverse. In some songs (for example Boiling Point) it would have been interesting to have some nice screams or even growls.
Now it's just some good songs (Dystopia, Dark City, maybe Anthem) and a lot of average material. But I'll give it some more listens. Maybe the rest grows on me.

I really think this album blows everything out of the water since the Horror Show. The thing is, some of my favourite songs ever are spread across the Iced Earth discography. But each album also brings some really boring and badly written songs as well. I like most of the songs on this one, so that says something for me.

Stu sounds awesome here by the way. I really like Ripper, but somehow he did not fit in with most Iced Earth songs. He is just way better of with his own Beyond Fear and Judas Priest songs. Especially when I listen to the wacken 2007 performance... Barlow will remain as one of my favourite vocalists ever, but it is just not in him anymore. So, I am really glad with Stu. I hope he will do good too in Live performances. The return of some old masterpieces on the setlist make me happy.

I'm listening to the album right now, and I am pleasantly surprised. I sitll don't think that Stu's a great singer, but at least there's less tempation to compare him to Matt and Tim because it's all original material. And the actual songwriting is stronger than the previous two albums.

Well, Come What May was the masterpiece of the previous album. Half of Dystopia is better than Come What May.

Well, finally having given it a few spins, I can say I'm pleasantly surprised. Schaffer's been off for me since about Something Wicked, with only one or two memorable songs per album afterwords, and I wasn't expecting much from this one, particularly with a Nu Metal type singer as this guy seemingly was. However, Stu seems to have done an awesome job, and Shaffer has himself a real find here, I think. I loved Matt on vocals, he's a beast, and while Ripper didn't exactly pique my interest at first, I learned to like and respect his abilities as a singer.

Stu's lower/mid-lower range, when he gets a chance to really put the harshness in there, is very nearly if not exactly at Matt's level. It even sounds the same if you don't actively seek out the differences. His higher range also can be fairly reminiscent of Ripper's screams, although when he tosses the falsetto bit in there, it really just doesn't quite sound right to me. Also, his mid range, or at least his lighter vocals on the more melodic songs on the album don't appeal to me. His voice in that range doesn't seem quite as mature or deep as Barlow's was (and I didn't care for Ripper's singing of those lighter pieces that much at all, he was always a bit more of a high and fast singer in my opinion, and he really did excel at it). He's got the talent, and he's got some of the best aspects of Barlow and Ripper. Now if he stays with the band, and this album proves to be successful, perhaps it'll turn out even better.

Main problem with the album is the song writing really isn't very catchy on a few of them, there are most definitely stronger and weaker songs, and some song seem to have half of them missing! Have to admit that I'm of the opinion that a song should be at least four minutes long unless it's sort of a transitional piece, of which there are none on this album.

Right now, I'd give it 7/10. If some of the songs are growers (And some of these songs are really great stuff, honestly, just need some time to get a little more familiar with them), I'd probably rank it at an 8/10 in a month or so, the most detrimental factors being song length and probably those lighter songs. Stu's voice in that range, while great for most everything else, isn't quite a perfect fit for those.

A good approximation of my bias after years of bad songs and stupid comments can be gleaned from that fact that while I've had it since it leaked I've not yet bothered to listen to it.

Pretty good. I think he needs to work on his stage performance, however. Vocals? Spot on. How well he engages the crowd, energy shown during the performance? Not so much, hah. Watched a number of live videos of him now, and he spends 90% of the time singing at the floor with his left arm pinned to his side and all his movement awkwardly squared towards the crowd. Still, minor problem, really. Nit-picky, probably, on my part. The sound is what matters, and he can deliver, no doubt about that! Guess I'll see for myself in three months!

I have not seen Iced Earth live since........... yesterday

Great show, Stu is good and while there will never be anyone even remotely close to Matt, he's worthy to carry on the torch. This band is still alive and kicking!!!!!!!

Saw them live tonight. Completely agree on the "carry on the torch" and "still alive and kicking" parts.
Never seen them with Barlow, though :(

Yeah, because we have a pretty sad song here, and you all seem so happy to me...!"
