Gotta love good NWOBHM.

#1 Post by Palantyre » 31 Jan 2011 09:13

Such as this bunch: http://heavyartillery.bandcamp.com/albu ... g-its-prey

Been listening to those six songs quite a lot in the last few days, and I just can't get over how good they are.
And The Lord said unto John: 'Come forth and receive eternal life'.
But John came fifth, and won a toaster.

The guitar is great, the vocals are kinda meh. I prefer Cloven Hoof when I want good NWOBHM. Russ North is a fucking machine on vox.

Volture are good, but they're obviously not NWOBHM as they're American and a new-ish band.

As for Cloven Hoof, I wish Russ north would give it up. Their new stuff is shockingly bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYp64MqGI40

Going to see them at keep it true.

They say that there's a broken light for every heart on Broadway.
They say that life's a game, then they take the board away.
They give you masks and costumes and an outline of the story
Then leave you all to improvise their vicious cabaret...

Lucky you! sadly I can't go to KIT this year :(

Make sure you don't miss Slough Feg - one of the best live bands around at the moment.

Will be at KIT as well, and I'm definitely not going to miss Slough Feg!
You charge each other for the time and breath it takes to say 'good morning',
But the truth is slowly dawning -- things are getting out of hand,
We all pursue our shattered dreams along the roads to our own ruin --
Watch our empires sink and wash away like castles made of sand.
And so cast off the lies that are your lives and find the truth within.

Given how KIT is set up, it will take effort to miss any band, but Slough Feg are the other band I really look forward to.

I'm looking very much forward to Arch/Matheos, btw.

I managed to miss some bands last year. And there were some that I have no idea whether I saw them or not. I blame vodka.

Still, I managed to see (and remember) Crimson Glory so that was good.

Those of you who'll be there this year, I envy you sooooo much. Enjoy it!

A lot of people don't know Saracen. Everybody should know Saracen.

A few other NWOBHM pieces of absolute brilliance that deserve to be heard:

Jameson Raid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zqAJM0IjRg

Deep Machine - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW5wWa1d8Zw

Virtue - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k872jXDyUcI

Mendes Prey - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yizcdXzoikA

ARC - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iV7721OpEw

Marquis de Sade - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2WsI07nnCk

Bleak House - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3--_ezCT5c

Elixir - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtYMGdZP7Qk

White Spirit - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usPhJ9kwqvo (Maiden fans will notice a similarity here to something. Look at the band's line-up and the song title... coincidence? )

Yes, I am (and was) aware they are not literally part of the NWOBHM phenomenon. However the acronym in question has, to my knowledge, also been used simply as a genre moniker for bands that sound like that, whether they're British and from that era or not.

Yeah, there are loads of those "retro metal" bands coming from Sweden these last few years.
Though I'd say my favourite band of the "new wave of trad metal" at the moment is from the US, namely White Wizzard.

Yep, it has sometimes been. Incorrectly so. The NWOBHM was a movement, not a genre, and it wasn't defined by any particular sound.
