Page. :)

Lately I have been listening a lot to A Matter Of Life And Death, for three reasons:

1 - I didn't find it interesting when it came out
2 - Ppl say its good and I want to know why
3 - I need something to bridge the gap with the new album.

Now that I have listened to it at least 20+ times, I still wonder why people think it's so great. Adrian gets some really good parts and Bruce is awesome too. In fact when I listen to it there is nothing entirely terrible about it. But if you would ask me, off the top of my head to memorate a single line, chorus or riff, I wouldn't be able too.

Or is this just me?

Nope, that's not just you.

It's an ok album, as it's listenable, but IMO it lacks a lot of energy. It's well written and performed, but it just plods along for too long and it's a problem with recent Maiden materials I think.

Well, Ferdi666, I...I just can't lay enough praise at the foot of AMOLAD. I loves it more than most of the "legendary" albums of the early/mid 80s. For me, it's a band in peak form and every song (yeah, every song) just kills me. Well, you know, we all got our own opinions and tastes. One man's pleasure is another man's pain. Heh.

Of course, it would be better without fuckwad Janick muddying up the sound with his sloppy playing, but that's something that's always present and I just try to ignore.

I VERY highly recommend checking this out: http://forum.maidenfans.com/index.php?topic=19267.0 There's a LOT to read there, but if you look at the last 10-15 pages, there are quite a few full album reviews.

Crack!

#55 Post by Hansi Smurf » 23 Jul 2010 02:53

There is some shit being sold as Crack in Winnipeg that delivers unbelievably painful and humiliating brain/body biofeedbacks thru the ether waves and into the bodies of non-users, by God!

And oh, how I loathe "spontaeneous human combustion" body-loop chemistry being sold in the mall-weed!

Anyway, by both popular and rational demand, "Where Eagles Dare" has been added to "Spikes", the best possible 2 disc set for which to compliment our combined pleasures at the forthcoming release of "Final Frontier"!

Hansi Smurf is the resident nutjob who never writes anything that makes the least bit of sense. Feel free to ignore his posts. Or you could try reading them, maybe it will make for some weird sort of amusement.

Personally I think his shit got old ages ago.

I think AMOLAD sounds like what Iron Maiden would've done had they been a rock giant in the mid 70s like Thin Lizzy/UFO, indeed Different World is their tribute to Thin Lizzy (read that somewhere, can't remember the source). I think it's a really great album, very different to previous releases. Personally, can't wait for the new one and love what I've heard so far.

So basically if you take Iron Maiden and take away the punk-influences and the memorable chorusses, you end up with AMOLAD?

That's an interesting thought, one I never considered before, but it might be very true (and prolly also the reason why I don't like this album as much, as I personally love those two things).

Pretty much, yeah!

Although, I can always remember the choruses from most of their stuff (because I'm a dirty fanboy). El Dorado, however, isn't one of them.

I won't listen to them again 'cause the sound quality sucks, but....... am I a Maiden fanboy (which I totally am, for the record) or those clips are fucking awesome?

But then again, the snippets of For the Greater Good of God turned me on so much and I think that that song is one of the worst off the latest album...

Are you kidding me? For the Greater Good of God is one of the best songs on AMOLAD...right behind Brighter than a Thousand Suns.

As good as it may be, it's terribily predictable and the typical typical typical Harris epic song: slow intro, slow verses, heavy verses start, then there's the chorus that repeats over and over the title, solo section, more chorus and more repetitions, and slow outro.

There, I also described No More Lies.

It's not a *bad* song per se, but it's soooooooo predictable.... and uselessly long. Give me Dance of Death over it anytime: a song that lasts 8 minutes and a half and doesn't even have a chorus! now THAT was something unexpected.

Now, that's like the best song of the '90s and the 2000's.

I'm pretty much with Oro on this one. I wouldn't even mind the songs being predictable, if they were just more, I dunno. Memorable? Now they just drag on and on without anything that interesting happening. In a word, they're boring.

Dance of Death and Paschendale are indeed brilliant songs, great examples of how long epic songs should be made.

I'm listening to the Final Frontier right now. Sounds quite progressive. Solo's on Isle of Avalon sound close to Dream Theater. Sound of the album is okay too. Bruce gives a good performance. The songwriting isn't as focussed, and I haven't heard another instant classic such as Rainmaker or Brave New World. Album is more of a continuation of AMOLAD.

I might grow to like it, but it doesn't have the instant 'wow'-factor that BNW and DoD did.

I found both reviews saying that this is their bestest thing ever like WHOAH OMFG, and reviews saying it's the most horrible worthless piece of musical shit they ever dared to put on record. As always the truth will be in the middle... at least by reading many reviews I somehow know what to expect and which songs are faster and which one have the slow intro (which is for the example the final five songs, half of the record with epics with a slow intro... d'uh)...

I guess it's like the new BG album, where a small group of die-hards will call it the best things of all time ever, while the rest of the world is happy to ignore another run-of-the-mill, by-the-numbers-affair of a band who went on a wee bit too long.

I got my copy today and I'm listening to it over and over.
I think that it is a special album but I can see why some people might say
it is the greatest thing in a long time and why some probably won't like it. It's different.

For my part I haven't felt that overwhelmed listening to a new Maiden album since maybe "7th son of a 7th son"!
Maybe "Brave new world" felt equally good, but it's hard to decide, yet.

There you go, my favourite Maiden albums might now be SSOASS, BNW & TFF

Out of the (so far) three reunion albums my favorite is, by far, Dance of Death... if this is going to be better than it or at least be on par with it, I'll be a happy happy boy 8)

It's very moody and ethereal and catchier tham AMLoaD. But just like in AMLoaD most songs are the sort of music you have to sit down and listen to, it requires full concentration from the listener to be appreciated.

I'm all for an album that requires full concentration and that after 10 listening you're still "WTF" about half of the songs. But if it turns out that the second part of the album is made up of songs that go

Slow intro
Verse
Bridge
Verse
Bridge
Chorus with the title repeated over and over
Solo
More choruses
Slow outro

And that take 10 minutes to do that, I'll be disappointed.
"There's a time when a man needs to fight and a time when he needs to accept that his destiny's lost, the ship has sailed and that only a fool will continue. The truth is I've always been a fool"

A slight call afar is tempting me, like a whisper sweet or an awful scream; I cannot ignore what I've always been, I'm leaving again - one last time? in my little kingdom I can be what I really wanted to be... The wanderer

Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

Apart from the "Slow intro / slow outro" thing, it's definitely none of the above concerning
the second half of the album.

Yep. The song structures are much wonkier than that (and practically all the songs are on the slowish side).

And no choruses with the title repeated over and over (glad about it myself).

If to compare with AMLoaD than they're more like Legacy and the Lord of Light, but with very different moods.

Bought it today and just heard it!
Yeah, it definitively needs some more listenings - I haven't understood if I like it or not :? :P I agree that the song structures are not predictable, so there's not the feel to listen to 5 slow-intro, same-old-song-structure "epics" in a row.

Satellite 15 is quite weird and WTF, dunno why they tied it into The Final Frontier, they should be two separate tracks - the title track however, as good and simple as it is, is damn addictive and it's already some days (thanks to the video) that I'm going "The final frontier, the final frontier" in my head all the time :D on the other hand, the choruses are quite hard to get, and not all are spectacular... Mother of Mercy is good but the chorus is a bit underwhelming, and in Isle of Avalon I didn't even recognize the chorus as such, when it first came.... same for The Talisman, it has an awesome bridge that should burst into something massively huge but never goes anywhere, and when the other chorus comes, it's just bland... and the "post-chorus" of Starblind is better than the chorus itself...

Anyway, since I bought it anyway (for a cheap price, go me! 8) ) I'd better listen to this over and over again... and I probably shouldn't have heard Dance of Death today before buying this

I just go the album yesterday, and so far I really like it! My favorite songs already are El Dorado, Coming Home, The Talisman, and When The Wild Wind Blows. Very interesting, very long songs, but still excellent! I got the Deluxe Edition, which comes in a metal case and some bonus content.

I am on my first listen now, nothing so far has been epic or stood up and shouted "LOOK AT ME!" so not overly impressed so far. It may be a grower, but Coming Home has just begun so I may be a bit premature in my opinion! Time will tell!
