Sratovarius

#1 Post by Cerbere » 17 Sep 2009 00:13

From my 'I need help making a decision' thread I got the impression that you guys really did not like them. Well, think they are amazing. I don't really like Polaris that much but I think Tolkki deserved to be kicked out because he is a douche.

i never got into this band.i wouldn't say they suck but their brand of harmless melodic power metal is really not my thing.

can you add an option up there?something along the lines of "i don't care" ?

No, it's not that we don't like them. Well, I guess some don't like them and some don't care, but that's not the reason.

It's just really fun to make jokes about some bands. Stratovarius falls into this category thanks to the band's long history of (fake or not) eventful fights, with some great moments such as Jens describing Tolkki (in the official forum that is) as the fat boy leaving his friends behind to eat another cake. Rhapsody and Dragonforce are also in this category for various reasons.

Polaris is better than their last three - if not five - albums btw.

No it's not that. They're on the category of pure crap metal. That's why.

Doesn't need any. :P

Nah, seriously though, I used to really like them, back when Visions had just come out, and I still have some sort of warm feelings towards those early albums, but with Destiny and especially the following stuff I just got bored of them. And then the mere boredom turned to disdain. I think Kotipelto is an annoying singer, their ludicrous wanking guitar and keyboard solos are annoying, and all in all they just sound so hollow.

I think they're Good. Actually , i voted that because I like their older stuff. I think Vision is a great album.
But after Infinite, I completely unhooked of that band.. and I never heard anything new (by new, I mean after Infinite  )
And i didn't listened to a strato CD for years..
Not now...

I think that poll would've looked quite different 10 years ago (or maybe even 5-6 years ago). Back then I had a different opinion about the band (or about that style in general). Old stuff is still okay (e.g. Visions, like mentioned before), but I don't care about the last couple of albums.

They started with different and even interesting albums in the early, Tollkki-singing era, reached stardom with some albums (Episode, Visions) that were indeed quite good, especially in the musical/historical moment they came out, and then they started a downward spiral of loss of creativity and blatant repetitions that ended in the crying shame that was the publicity stunt of 2004... that and the loss of quality in the songs sealed their fate. Without being an ass kisser to the band that hosts us, I think Blind Guardian can be taken as an example of a band that has a long stretch of creativity and always manages to stay on top musically speaking, and Stratovarius evidently don't have ten "masterpieces" albums in them. They came, they saw, they conquered some, and then they slowly but steadly disappeared, and in the end Tollkki killed the band with his problems.

I only have Destiny, Infinite and Polaris. I haven't listened to Polaris that much, but I like it. Just as those other two albums. And I'm planning to buy Visions.

Blind Guardian is beyond Genres. I'D call the recent Sonata Arctica-stuff progressive power metal, and BG don't sound like that. The last album you could easily put into one genre was FtB.

I think I haven't listened enough of their albums to be sure. I think that the Ifinite was the album that I listened the longest, and I even liked it, plus some other songs, though I even can't remember from which albums. So, I'll say "good", because of what I've heard so far, but apparently, after I hear these newer albums, I will change my mind.
I would vote for OK, or not bad, if I had that option :), sooner than good.

I'm listening their new album right now. It's good, not exceptional. Luckily I bought it for a fairly low price.
