Because words matter (Lyrics thread)

#1 Post by Joost » 16 Oct 2006 23:34

It's been a while since we last had a topic about song lyrics. It's great if you post some explanation on why you like the lyrics in question so much, but you can also just let the words speak for themselves.

Even though this is posted in the metal section, it doesn't really matter whether the song is metal or not (posting two topics like this, one here and one in other styles, seems a bit silly). Just post your favourite song lyrics.
You charge each other for the time and breath it takes to say 'good morning',
But the truth is slowly dawning -- things are getting out of hand,
We all pursue our shattered dreams along the roads to our own ruin --
Watch our empires sink and wash away like castles made of sand.
And so cast off the lies that are your lives and find the truth within.

So, let me start with a few favourites of mine

Metal Church - Anthem To The Estranged

Starved for destination, a beggar man by trade
A desperate man needs more than someone else to blame
Friendless he appears, he hides behind his tears
For things he's lost, or things he'll never have at all

The forgotten man wanders misplaced in the world
Obscurity is all the eye can see, and I recall

All alone again

As we pass on by and continue with our day
Can we appraise the quality of life some other way?

All alone again

When you take a longer look at someone on the run
You may see reflections of yourself becoming one
Take an extra moment when you find yourself at peace
To think about your values and your own affluency

Everything you've worked for and everything you've done
May be thrown by the wayside, and you're not the only one
Everything around you may seen worn and overused
But imagine yourself removed from all that you're used to

All alone again

Once an influential man, once was in his prime
He spends his days repeating lines like "can you spare a dime?"
Shunned by those loved you and by those who were your friends
Can you adjust to a different life of living on the edge?

The destitute find meaning in a different way of life
The doorways that they dwell in are shelter in the night
No shining crystal possessions set out for his display
His purpose is to find the food to get him throught the day

All alone again

Roaming aimless through the streets of supply and demand
Once a gypsy disconnected, no more, no future plans
Self discarded king of ruin, worthless to the world
Fight to keep his sanity, his voice is never heard

You may think it thoughtless and his mind has gone astray
He always seems to find a reason to get him through the day

All alone again

He staggers down the alley to drink his spirits by himself
As he prays to God that he wakes up somewhere else

A brilliant portrayal of one of those people who didn't manage to adapt to the all the complexities of our society and, for some reason or another lost his chances and fell down the ladder of society. It's easy to blame people and say that it's all their own fault, but mistakes are made by everyone, and mostly it's only the unlucky ones who suffer permanent consequences of them.

Skid Row - 18 And Life

Ricky was a young boy, he had a heart of stone
Lived 9 to 5 and worked his fingers to the bone
Just barely out of school, came from the edge of town
Fought like a switchblade so no one could take him down
He had no money, ooh no good at home
He walked the streets a soldier and he fought the world alone
And now it's

Eighteen and life, you got it
Eighteen and life, you know
Your crime is time and it's
Eighteen and life to go
Eighteen and life, you got it
Eighteen and life, you know
Your crime is time and it's
Eighteen and life to go

Tequila in his heartbeat, his veins burned gasoline
It kept his motor running but it never kept him clean
They say he loved adventure, Ricky's the wild one
He married trouble, had a courtship with a gun
Bang, bang, shoot 'em up, the party never ends.
You can't think of dying when that bottle's your best friend
And now it's

Eighteen and life, you got it
Eighteen and life, you know
Your crime is time and it's
Eighteen and life to go
Eighteen and life, you got it
Eighteen and life, you know
Your crime is time and it's
Eighteen and life to go

"Accidents will happen" they all heard Ricky say
He fired his six-shot to the wind that child blew a child away
Eighteen and life, you got it
Eighteen and life, you know
Your crime is time and it's
Eighteen and life to go
Eighteen and life, you got it
Eighteen and life, you know
Your crime is time and it's
Eighteen and life to go

I guess this is maybe somewhat comparable to the last song: telling a story about someone losing his chances and fucking up his life for once and for good. I guess I just I tend to like songs with themes like this a lot.

New Model Army - I Love The World

The roll of distant thunder breaks, the afternoon of silence wakes
They hurry through from Petergate as if they know this dance
In fury blind, I drive at night across the moors, the open roads
Beneath the freezing starry skies, racing in some trance
These cities are illusions of some triumph over Nature's laws
We've seen the iron carcass rust and buildings topple into dust
And as the waters rise, it seems we cling to all the rootless things
The Christian lies, technology, while spirits scream and sing
Oh God I love the world

Well I never said I was a clever man but I know enough to understand
That the endless leaps and forward plans will someday have to cease
You blind yourselves with comfort lies like lightning never strikes you twice
And we laugh at your amazed surprise as the Ark begins to sink
This temple that is built so well to separate us from ourselves
Is a power grown beyond control, a will without a face
And watching from outside I wish that I could wash my hands of this
But we are locked together here, this bittersweet embrace
Oh God I love the world

And if one day the final fire explodes across the whitened sky
I know you've said you'd rather die and make it over fast
With courage from your bravest friends, waiting outside for the end
With no bitterness but an innocence that I can't seem to grasp
I know somehow I will survive - this fury just to stay alive
So drunk with sickness, weak with pain, I can walk the hills one last time
Scarred and smiling, dying slow, I'll scream to no one left at all
I told you so, I told you so, I told you so . .
Oh God I love the world

This song to me sums up a big deal of what I believe to be wrong with modern civilization and its delusions of grandeur: we feel we have been victorious nature, we pretend everything is just all-right and we can use and abuse the earth at will, indeed blinding ourselves with comfort lies. For how long can we go on like this, really?

Rush - Red Sector A

All that we can do is just survive
All that we can do to help ourselves is stay alive

Ragged lines of ragged grey
Skeletons, they shuffle away
Shouting guards and smoking guns
Will cut down the unlucky ones

I clutch the wire fence until my fingers bleed
A wound that will not heal
A heart that cannot feel
Hoping that the horror will recede
Hoping that tomorrow well all be freed

Sickness to insanity
Prayer to profanity
Days and weeks and months go by
Dont feel the hunger
Too weak to cry

I hear the sound of gunfire at the prison gate
Are the liberators here?
Do I hope or do I fear?
For my father and my brother, its too late
But I must help my mother stand up straight

Are we the last ones left alive?
Are we the only human beings to survive?

A song Rush wrote based upon singer Geddy Lee's mother's experiences in a concentration camp in the second World War. Among other things, she stated that, when there, she at times felt that the outside world had just vanished, gone completely, been destroyed, and that the people there were the only ones left: hence the lines Are we the last ones left alive? / Are we the only human beings to survive?. Overall, the lyrics are touching and convincing, and combined with the music they manage to recreate at least a bit of the atmosphere of fear and confusion and hopelessness that the people in those camps definitely must have felt.

Pain of Salvation - Iter Impius

I know, it's an album about God. But I see it as a day after bitter lovesong, and it chills me out of myself:

I woke up today
Expecting to find all that I sought
And climb the mountains of the life I bought
Finally I'm at the top of every hierarchy
Unfortunately there is no one left
But me

I woke up today
To a world that's ground to dust, dirt and stone
I'm the king upon this withering throne
I ruled every forest, every mountain, every sea
Now there're but ruins left to rule for me
And... you see, it beckons me;
Life turned its back on us
How could you just agree?
...how? I just don't see...

I woke up today
To a world devoid of forests and trees
Drained of every ocean, every sea
Just like a useless brick upon the shore
The morning after the storm
That swept the bridge away
Relentless tide
No anger
Just this relentless time
That calls us all on
But...

I'm never crossing that line
Leaving this world behind
I will stay on my own
On this bloodstained throne
I rule the ruins and wrecks
And the dust, dirt and stone
I rule rage rod and rattling of bones

I am on my own
I am all alone
Everything is gone
Stuck forever here
Already cold

I'm never crossing that line
Leaving this world behind
I will stay on my own
On this bloodstained throne...

I'm never crossing that line
Leaving this world behind
I will stay on my own
On this bloodstained throne
I rule the ruins and wrecks
And the dirt and the dust and the stone
I'm the ruler of rage rod and rust
And the rattling of bones
Ruler of ruin...

Really, Pain of Salvation's whole discography could be posted here, song by song. I'll post a few of them, one from each album.

Winning a War

Once there was a world out on these fields, that was untouched.
Grateful for its love we thanked the earth that gave so much.
And oh, I loved it so!
Once there was a pair of eyes, unbroken just like my heart.
Belonging to a father and his son, now torn apart.
And oh, I loved him so!

"Why, mommy? Tell me why daddy is walking away - leaving me!"

I remember birds of pray, dark shadows piercing the ground!
Faceless men came shouting about a pride to which we were bound.
And oh, I searched for him so!
"Faith darling, have faith my son! Your daddy is winning a war..."
"...for you!"

Daddy need me, love and lead me.
Your superseding war won't feed me!

Watch fathers and sons pale cling to their guns.
Marching line by line leaving reason behind.
Their eyes now tensed with fear; enemies are near.
But all armies are only fathers and sons...

Earth bleeding through their proceeding.
All greedy voltures are needing.
WAR! WAR! Dad - who is winning a war?
And dad - who is it for?
I won't shed a tear - I won't show no fear!
Won't disappoint you dad (all greedy voltures need war)
I WON'T MISS YOU DAD!
...I'll shut down...

...but daddy, I miss you so.
And I need you here - dad I'm alone here and
DADDY, I'M LOSING YOUR WAR OUT HERE!

Daddy need me, love and lead me.
Your superseding war won't feed me.

I like not only the message and the take on war, but the vivid images it creates of the child not understanding a shit of what's going on, not accepting the (empty) reasons he's given.

Inside

I was told the pain and hunger was not my fault
How could they be so wrong?
And man, of all five billion people you're only one
Believed them for far too long!
Clean hands
My land is my home

I'm inside the big machine and it's eating me!
And I am just a wheel in motion, too blind to see
The way we are heading now

I'm hollow
I swallow, but....

Inside I'm strong
Inside I'm free
Inside I'm young
Inside I'm still me

[Since 1990 there have been 93 wars in 70 states all around the world, with 5.5 million people dead. 75% of these people were civilians, 1 million of them were children...]

(Guns don't kill - I don't kill. Do I?)

Drink with me, laugh with me, friends for tonight
Stay with me, sleep with me, happy tonight
I only feel lonely outside this bar
Look at me when I speak! Who do you think you are?

Just look at me now! Inside I'm lost...

Now I'm vain, numb this pain - why is it burning?
Clean as rain, not a stain - so why am I yearning?

I can't sleep - I twist and turn
In too deep - I sweat, I burn
I'm afraid that I'll awake, dressed up in a big mistake
Then I'd break!

What if I just closed my eyes?
(I'm not clean...)
What if I shut out the lies?
(...blood unseen...)
And what if I could hear my heart...
(...all over my hands!)
...accusing me for taking part
of the Machine

Again, there're better lyrics on this album, although the best is the sum of all the parts. Really instructive and moving. This song talks about this feeling sometimes we might experience, where you know something's wrong, but you don't know exactly why. One a more cold layer, it also depicts the supposedly clean armamentistic industry, where the workers don't really see their facility as a part of the problem.

The Perfect Element

Yesterday found him today
Caught him at his last breath
These walls built to stand come-what-may
Lie shattered in the ashes
His skin against this dirty floor
Eyes fixed on the ceiling
He has stretched those chains of sin
Far beyond all feelings
Still, so still...

In his head a thunderous
Cry of desperation
Tearing voices from his past
Scream for his attention
Behind those eyes a world explodes
No one there to save him
All pain that he's been passing on
Answers to his craving
Once more

I will never leave this shame...

Falling beyond the point of no return
Nothing to become and nothing left to burn

Stealing meaning from this child
We took away his reason
His soul put under lock and key
His heart blackened from treason
But if you take from those you fear
Everything they value
You have bred the perfect beast
Drained enough to kill you

Falling beyond the point of no return
Nothing to become and nothing left to burn

Watching unseen untouched bleeding
Empty exposed dying eyes closed

Once he had forests and mountains
That were only his - listening to him
Once he would run through the summer days
Catching memories for ages to come
Now he is dressing this naked floor
With his flesh and blood, and times passes by
His trade of pain might just have lead him
To deal with consequence
For some change as time passes by

I am the waking child
(Lingering, climbing, clinging, clutching
Craving, clawing, hurting, falling down)
I, the wayward son of a mountain lake
(Of icy liquor tears, of a silent Earth)
(Of a rusty lid, of a wingless wind)
(Of an eyeless storm, of fallen gods,
who lost their way)
I set myself on fire
To breed the Perfect Element

Will I ever walk again?

Falling far beyond the point of no return
Nothing to become and nothing left to burn

(This is the end)

Nothing left to say,
The pain will go away
Now you must surely see,
That you are killing me
You are killing me
Now you are killing me
(You must never leave this shame!)
Now you are killing me
(You must never leave this shame!)
Now you are killing me
(You must never leave this shame!)

Is this more than you want?

This song sums perfectly the inner message of the whole album. Some parts are simply amazing to read/listen, while others are cold facts. This song deals with the whys of something as complex as the violence on the streets. A down to the bone point of view on the matter, far from the usual takes you might see, listen or read everywhere.

Beyond the Pale

And SEX was always there from when I was only eight years - tempting me leave thirsty
Sweat, skin, a PULSE divine to balance this restless MIND - it seemed so wonderfully physical
Oh the BLOOD, the lust, the bodies that color the world: all drugs to die for! Won't you share my fire?
How can LOVE make that world a minefield of forbidden GROUND?
A map of untouchable skin and SILENCED desire?

And love was there in vain, PROFOUND and deep but traced with pain - too early for a child of TEN
Loving the pure and sane he sought the goddess unstained - watching them turn to flesh again
HUNGRY for both the PURITY and SIN
Life seemed to him merely like a GALLERY of how to be
And he was always much more HUMAN than he wished to be
But there is a LOGIC to his world, if they could only see

Wishing - Sickened - Ill - Ticking

SOMEONE still this hunger (it's in my blood) always growing stronger (ticking)
BUDAPEST I'm learning, Budapest you're burning me

This is not who I wanted to be, this is not what I wanted to see
She's so young so why don't I feel free now that she is here under me?

Naked - Touching - Soft - Clutching

And then after all it lead me here to wake up again
Seeking a love that might make me feel free in myself but then it proves to be
Something that hurts inside when we touch, so I move on, I lose my way
Astray I'm trying too much to feel unchained, to burn out this sense of feeling cold
And every day I seek my prey: someone to taste and to hold
I feel alive during the split second when they smile and meet my eyes
But I could cry 'cause I feel broken inside!
COME and DROWN with me- the UNDERTOW will sweep us away!
And you will see that I'm ADDICTED to my HONESTY
Trust! 'Cause after all my sense of TRUTH once brought me here
But I've LOST control and I don't know if I am true to my soul
I've lost CONTROL and I don't know if I am true to my soul
Losing control and I don't know if I am TRUE AT ALL

And we were always much more human than we wished to be...
And I remember when you said you've been UNDER him - I was suprised to feel such pain
And all those years of being faithful to YOU despite the hunger flowing through my veins
And I have always tried to calm things down - SWALLOW down swallow down
"It's just another small THORN in my crown"
But suddenly one day there was too much blood in my eyes, and I had to take this WALK down
REMEDY LANE of whens and whys...

Empty - Licking - Clean - Choking

SOMEONE still this hunger (possessing my mind) always growing stronger (craving)
BUDAPEST I'm learning, Budapest I'm burning me
This is not who I wanted to be, this is not what I wanted to see
She's so young so why I don't feel free now that she's under me?
In the morning she's going away in a Budapest taxi I've paid
Seeking freedom I touched the untouched - it's too much - I'm BEYOND THE PALE...

Prematurity is the story of both you and me, and we were always much more human than we wished to be
Prematurity is truly the story of both you and me, and we were always much more human than we wished to be
We were always much more human than we wished to be - we were always much more human than we wished to be
We will always be more human then we wish to be

WE WILL ALWAYS BE SO MUCH MORE HUMAN THAN WE WISH TO BE...

This song deals with some taboos in a very interesting way. Sex, human relations and feelings born and dead from them. At the end of the day, the last phrase of the song, is the truth that will prevail.

Nihil Morari
[Homines Fabula Finis]

"See me"
"Hear me"
"Need me"
Some things will never change
"Touch me"
"Heal me"
Mankind remains the same

Oceans
Forests
Nations
Now everything bears our name
While Earth is bleeding
Nothing will remain
Nothing prevails

We were stuck in this world of change
Expecting it to remain
Now nothing is left unstained

No!

When there's nothing more that we can trade
Own
Steal
Or sell

When there's nothing whole because we took it apart
And
Just left
Moved on

When there's nothing left for us to break
Use
Abuse
Or rape

Then you're free to count how much you saved

I can see the ways we fail
I can see us fall so easily
A structure far too frail
I can see 40,000 years of knowledge and history
Invested in this child
Spoiled and stained by proud divinity
Gaining at best the perspective and wisdom
Of not even a fleeting century

We have now reached the final ten thousandth of a second
of our evolutionary year, as we hit 2,000 at a birth rate
of 250 people a minute

Tell me
How are we supposed to survive?
If we're acting like fools
All dropping dead to stay alive?
Someone tell me
Please just show me
If there's nothing to do, God we'll turn to you
But if we're an image of you
I reckon you are just as puzzled and ugly too

You think we have developed fast; that we're civilized and intelligent
I'll let you in on a secret: we have developed Things!
The rest is simply knowledge passed on
(I can see us drain this world
I can see us buying loss too cheap
Terra Sterilia washing its bronken hand of us now
Creation's blackest sheep!)
Hell, 99% of humanity couldn't put together a simple light bulb if you
put a gun to their heads!
And the intellect rubs off on fear

The year 2,010 AD: 6,823 Million people
2,020 AD: 7,518 Million people
2,030 AD: 8,140 Million people
2,040 AD: 8,668 Million people
2,050 AD: 9,104 Million people

I can see us read the signs
But spell them out in backward travesty
I see us close our eyes
To all the wounds that we inflict to this world by being "free"
We love this world to death
Purchasing our lifestyles with our lives
Defending our momentarily nations
With the loss of our priceless earthly home

It's not hard to reach the top
It's not hard not knowing when to stop
It's not hard to take all
Not very difficult to fly if you settle for a fall
It's not hard to cross a line
It's not hard to push and go to far
Some creatures cannot climb
Then there are us who cannot even learn how to stay alive

I'm sorry!
For the things we did and did not do
Forgive us; the fools that rushed ahead without a clue
I am sorry
Please forgive us
For this human lack of humanity
This evolutionary travesty
This tragedy called "Man"
...called "Man"...

I'm sorry!
For the things we did and didn't do
Forgive us; the fools that rushed ahead without a single clue
...without a single clue...

I'll say that this song tells my take on mankind with high precision.

Dark Tranquillity - Punish My Heaven

We are the outstretched fingers
That seize and hold the wind...

The strangeness of awakening
In an oh so silent world
Breathlessly waiting
For the first proud beams of light
As the hours grow longer
And the shadows never fall
My sky has forsaken me
My desperation grows

Bring me the light
In the darkness that never ends
The dawn will never come
Punish my heaven

We have arrived
At the outermost crossroads
The charge of cosmos
At our atmospheric skies
Will cause our fall

If I had wings, would I be forgiving?
If I had horns
Would there be flames to shy my smile?

Hymns of loss are heard
From the masses in the streets
Praising the last of days
I punish

Bring me the night
In the fires that never end
The dawn will never come
Punish my heaven

The charge of cosmos
Charging at us from unearthly distance
I challenge the universe
It's the choice between heaven and hell

My soul bears all the weight of mountains
As mankind weaves its silent end
Can there be no forgiveness?
I curse the heaven above me
As the light sinks through
My outstretched fingers
Fading in my open arms

Make each tear in my bare hands
A lifetime in hell

On this last day of light
When our autumn leaves fell
And as heaven itself commands me
Out of its lair
I fear not
My face lined for darkness
I'll go!

I've always felt this song to speak to both the greatness and misery of the human condition. Of a limited mind reaching to forever. Fingers, grasping the wind, trying to hold the light... There is a certain glory to this absurdity, a certain joy to this despair. And as heaven itself commands me out of it's lair, I have lost innocence but gained wisdom, I have lost hope, but gained determination.

Skyclad - Cradle Will Fall

A species in its infancy--a living idiosyncrasy,
This 'naked ape' believes itself divine.
Assured of its supremacy--it dreams of immortality,
The first words that it speaks--"This world is mine."

But the time has come for us to realise,
That the animal instincts we deeply despise--
Are far more civilised than humanity.

Mankind has lived to curse the day it climbed down from the trees,
But still we keep our heads held high whilst crawling on our knees.
I hope I never live to see the 'perfect' world you crave,
Where ambition is the burden we shall carry to our graves.

We think that we are so superior--for in God's image we were made,
All other life we deem inferior--there to exploit, kill or enslave
No amount of remonstration could ever show a mind so small
that it is not 'the be and end all.'

Into the future we race driven on by our greed,
Like rats in a maze we will never be free.
Science is the 'new-religion'--scaples slash dissecting truth and reason,
Behind locked doors where no-one sees.

Down evolution's one way street mankind pursues his dream,
Of a race conceived in test tubes with the same designer genes,
But like a child who tries to run before it learns to crawl--
he'll go crying to his 'Mother' when he sees the cradle fall.

I am human--I was made to be the ultimate machine,
With the power at my fingertips to realise my dream.
Homo-sapiens--the 'master-race,' Nature's pride and joy,
Taking all the world will give me--what it won't I shall destroy.

In our hearts we yearn to be immortal--conquer all sickness and disease,
Create a world where even death's not fatal--then we can shape our destinies.
A populace of plastic people live genetically pre-programmed lives--and no-one
laughs and no-one cries.

Blinded by science the masses are duped and deceived,
By the faces that smile from their colour T.V.s.
They'll steal your dreams--remove them surgically (but leave you scars so deep
and lasting),
God is dead man has surpassed him.

Like children in our playground--we contrive such foolish games,
But fail to see the consequence of suicidal aims.
No matter how we bend the rules there's no way we can win,
Not even pleading Ignorance will vindicate our sins.

I am human--I was made to be the ultimate machine,
With the power at my fingertips to realise my dream.
Homo-sapiens--the 'master-race,' Nature's pride and joy,
Taking all the world will give me--what it won't I shall destroy.

Mankind a babe-in-arms,
Believes he's come of age--
And reaches for the stars,
With one foot in the grave.

I am human--I was made to be the ultimate machine,
I am human--I have the power to realise my dream.
I am human--an automaton--a mindless 'technoslave,'
I am human--I am servant to the monsters I have made.

Well another philosophical, anthropological lyric and one with a far darker stance on the same problem. I can't say I fully agree with Martin here, as I rarely do, but it's well written and very intense in it's message.

Skyclad - Great Blow For A Day Job

Hear my tale - I'm norman normal, always humble, mild and meek.
In my bank a lowly banker - run-down brach on nowhere street
'till one day a stranger called - a fetid bible black he laughed,
said "Sonny I don't want your money, I don't need an overdraft.

Boy you have a great potential, don't you let it go to waste.
My offer ends - so it's essential that you hurry on (make haste!).
For a life of milk and honey sign along the dotted line...
Thirty years of girls and money - at the end your soul is mine!"

No one can dissuade me - I'm donw on my knees,
my conscience says "No" - my libido "Yes please!"
If I put my pen to paper for eternity I'm damned.
If I don't I'll never be the singer in a fiddel band.
Can anyone blame me? - I don't think they'd dare,
my soul says "No way" - But my mouth cries "Oh yeah!"

Here I am - your good friend norman, not so humble anymore.
Others age - but I look younger, stronger that I did before.
I used to drive a Fiat Panda - now a lime green Cadillac.
Guess my story goes to show not all the 'devils' own' dig black.

I know there is a price I must pay for my thirty years misspent,
when my satanic manager recoups my soul (100%).
I'll meet him at the crossroads, midnight chimes - my time has come
to party with the 'porno-queens' down by the shores of acheron.

I'll party on in acheron!

No one could dissuade me - I fell to my kness,
my conscience said "No" - my libido "Yes please!"
I have put my pen to paper and eternally am damned,
I've squandered my immortal soul by singing in a fiddle band.
Could anyone blame me? - I don't think they dare,
my soul said "No way" - but my mouth cried "Oh yeah!"

'Evil I did dwell - Lewd did I live' -
It's a small price to pay for the gift that he gives.
Was it all worth it? - I'm too drunk to tell,
I swap my cocaine for the brimstone of hell.

The end.

My fave part is the Fiat Panda, used to drive one of those too. (Well, it was a Seat Marbella, but it's basically the same car). Just a nice story I really like, well rhymed and written. It's witty and suave.

They say that life's a game, then they take the board away.
They give you masks and costumes and an outline of the story
Then leave you all to improvise their vicious cabaret...

Korpiklaani has great lyrics. This is Korpiklaani - beer beer.
The song got so much meaning, so much passion. Truly a poetical masterpiece

From evening to morning
and morning to evening
I wanna drink
something stronger than a man
From evening to morning
and morning to evening
I wanna drink
cause that's what I am
Beer, beer
I want beer
from beer I get really drunk
Beer, beer
I need more beer
so much I pass out
For beer I'm working
for beer I'm fighting
for bee I'll do
whatever I have to
when drunk I'm talking
when drunk I'm joking
when drunk I can be as I've
always wanted to bee

Iron Maiden - Paschendale

In a foreign field he lay
Lonely soldier, unknown grave
On his dying words he prays
Tell the world of Paschendale

Relive all that he's been through
Last communion of his soul
Rust your bullets with his tears
Let me tell you 'bout his years

Laying low in a blood filled trench
Kill time 'til my very own death
On my face I can feel the falling rain
Never see my friends again

In the smoke, in the mud and lead
Smell the fear and the feeling of dread
Soon be time to go over the wall
Rapid fire and end of us all

Whistles, shouts and more gun fire
Lifeless bodies hang on barbed wire
Battlefield nothing but a bloody tomb
Be reunited with my dead friends soon

Many soldiers eighteen years
Drown in mud, no more tears
Surely a war no-one can win
Killing time about to begin

Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again

The bodies of ours and our foes
The sea of death it overflows
In no man's land, God only knows
Into jaws of death we go

Crucified as if on a cross
Allied troops they mourn their loss
German war propaganda machine
Such before has never been seen

Swear I heard the angels cry
Pray to god no more may die
So that people know the truth
Tell the tale of Paschendale

Cruelty has a human heart
Every man does play his part
Terror of the men we kill
The human heart is hungry still

I stand my ground for the very last time
Gun is ready as I stand in line
Nervous wait for the whistle to blow
Rush of blood and over we go

Blood is falling like the rain
Its crimson cloak unveils again
The sound of guns can't hide their shame
And so we die on Paschendale

Dodging shrapnel and barbed wire
Running straight at cannon fire
Running blind as I hold my breath
Say a prayer symphony of death

As we charge the enemy lines
A burst of fire and we go down
I choke a cry but no-one hears
Feel the blood go down my throat

Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again

Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again

See my spirit on the wind
Across the lines, beyond the hill
Friend and foe will meet again
Those who died at Paschendale

This song is, in my opinion, the best when it comes to lyrics which Iron Maiden created. First of all, the history of warfare always wakes my interest. Secondly, this is about a battle during WO I which is often forgotten in historical books. (except for the English, for Paschendale is a place where many an English soldier fell, but I think Ypres is better known than Paschendale) This song expresses the pressure, sadness, anger and desperation like nothing else I've ever listened to. And another reason why I like these songs: we should never forget the soldiers that fought for true freedom (whether it be a volunteer or a conscript) and their country. And this means the common soldier in the first place. Don't get me wrong, though. I don't idealize war.

Ever since the days of old
Men would search for wealth untold
They'd dig for silver and for gold
And leave the empty holes
And way down south in the Everglades
Where the black water rolls and the saw grass sways
The eagles fly and the otters play
In the land of the Seminole.

Progress came and took its toll
And in the name of flood control
They made their plans and they drained the land
Now the glades are going dry
And the last time I walked in the swamp
I sat upon a Cypress stump
I listened close and I heard the ghost
Of Osceola cry.

So blow, blow Seminole wind,
Blow like you're never gonna blow again.
I'm calling to you like a long lost friend,
But I know who you are.
And blow, blow from the Okeechobee,
All the way up to Micanopy.
Blow across the home of the Seminole,
The alligators and the gar.

Well, me and my lady had our first big fight,
So I drove around until I saw the neon light.
A corner bar, and it just seemed right.
So I pulled up.

Not a soul around but the old bar keep,
Down at the end and looking half asleep.
He walked up and said, "What'll it be?"
I said, "The good stuff."

He didn't reach around for the whiskey;
He didn't pour me a beer.
His blue eyes kinda went misty,
He said, "You can't find that here."

"Because it's the first long kiss on a second date.
Momma's all worried when you get home late.
And droppin' the ring in the spaghetti plate
'Cause your hands are shakin' so much.
And it's the way that she looks with the rice in her hair.
Eatin' burnt suppers that whole first year,
And asking for seconds to keep her from tearing up.
Yeah, man, that's the good stuff."

He grabbed a carton of milk and he poured a glass.
I smiled and said, "I'll have some of that."
We sat there and talked as an hour passed...
Like old friends.

I saw a black and white picture and it caught my stare:
It was a pretty girl with bouffant hair.
He said, "That's my Bonnie,
Taken about a year after we were wed."

He said, "I spent five years in the bottle,
When the cancer took her from me.
But I've been sober three years now,
Because the one thing stronger than the whiskey:

"Was the shot of her holding my baby girl.
The way she adored that string of pearls
I gave her the day that our youngest boy, Earl,
Married his high school love.

"And it's a new t-shirt saying I'm a Grandpa!
And being right there as our time got small,
And holding her hand when the Good Lord called her up...
Yeah, man, that's the good stuff."

He said, "When you get home, she'll start to cry.
When she says 'I'm sorry,' say, 'So am I.'
And look into those eyes so deep in love...

And drink it up...

That's the good stuff.

Care to use a smaller font?

Zyklon - Psyklon Aeon

Congregation unity; faint as your ideology
Concentrate all in sterility
Morals runs riot in an endless variety
Of fragmentary post-solidarity

Never share the effort, symmetry in lines
Will the Providence ever grace you from all the lies?
Dishonour any corruption, favour only redemption
Voluntary subordination, engage in contemplation

You base it all on hierarchy
No wonder it'll turn into fucking anarchy
Detachment of continuity
Revolving around an ever growing susceptibility

Heading towards the Psyklon-Aeon
The last analysis will forever be perishable
That's how we would execute any cosmological society
On behalf of further reliability

This is all what your life is worth
You better pray it'll be short

Ayreon - My House On Mars

"It is the end of the 21st Century. I have returned to my own childhood. I remember it
all as the Dream Sequencer images mix with my own recollections. This is the day my
sister and I realised that we would never see the planet Earth."

[Johan Edlund, Floor Jansen]

Daddy where are you now
Forgot about your vow?
You promised you'd return and take me to Earth

Did you have to fight that war
What was it all for?
The honor of one's name, what is it worth?

I'm all alone - we're all alone
My future's unknown - our future's unknown
I reach out to the stars out here in my house on Mars

Mother did you hear me cry?
You never told me why
You put me in this world of rock and dust

No friends for playing games
No foes who scorn my name
Computerized machines of steel and rust

Is this my home? - this is our home
This desolate dome - this desolate dome
I call out to the stars: I'm alone in my house on Mars

I'll never smell the ocean breeze
I'll never climb the highest trees
I'll never feel the burning sun
I'll never meet my chosen one... in my house

Daddy I forgive you now
You could not keep your vow
You will never return, I'll never see Earth

My time has come - our time has come
I'm emotionally numb - emotionally numb
I'm headed for the stars, I'm leaving my house on Mars
No friends in my house on Mars
No foes in my house on Mars
I was born in my house on Mars
I will die in my house on Mars

Dark Tranquillity - Hours Passed In Exile

What if:

A) some things are destined to failure
B) some things are never meant to be
C) someone never sees
D) someone never opens
E) somehow we are different

Though I never claimed to be right
Give to me the benefit of doubt

I brought you fires
That you put out
I brought you fires
For I cannot be without
I came with sadness
But this my shattered heart can't bear

What of the times in exile
What of the hours passed
What if touches seem too trivial

You can never tell me I'm wrong
A song I've heard so long

So what if healing takes forever
So what if time is meant for others
So what is left is but a shatter
And what is broken can't be whole
One of the few Dark Tranquillity songs I find very easy to interpret. For me, the lyrics deal with chances in life, the possibility to use those chances, causality, decisions you make, the outcome of these decisions, the misery caused by those decisions and the influence those false decisions have on your life. The first part is about different structures of personality, the individual possibilities to develop your own self. Second part deals with decisions the indivual made in its life and their negation by the environment, which leads to a hurt individual. The chorus seems to show the consequences of being hurt for the I - not being able to interact with its environment properly anymore and such. The last part, in my interpretation, is a pessimistic view of life by the broken individual being. No chance for the soul to heal, feeling alone and useless in society and such.

Granted, may be a very personal interpretation, but I think it fits the song very well. One of the best songs of Dark Tranquillity for me, not only lyrical-, but also musicalwise.

mit unenglischen Grüßen
Der Jan.

Am Anfang sah es fruchtbar aus,
doch machten wir nur Unfug draus,
so ist uns das Niveau entglitten,
auf einem tr00en Rentierschlitten.

You make our decisions
You make our rules
Then you make us fight your stupid wars
That's going too far

Come on people, let me hear you say
You Bastards, you're gonna pay

You tell us not to steal
You tell us not to kill
Then you tell us to fight for your country
That's tell us to die

Come on people, let me hear you say
You Bastards, you're gonna pay

"Reach for yourself
And your battered mates
The time has come
I'm not talkin' about no revolution
I only want to find a solution
I want to change the world"

You can't fight 'em with words
You can't fight 'em with rage
Fight 'em with peace and love
It's our only chance

Come on people, let me hear you say
You Bastards, you're gonna pay
Trouble: Bastards Will Pay

For obvious reason, YOU FUCKING BASTARDS YOU ARE GONNA PAY!!
Children, they grow in a house of love
filled with hate, but I never cried
living in dreams that are reality
can`t you see, they are calling for me

Problems on their minds just get worse
everyone is here but I`m all alone
Feelings of depression, adolescent times
can`t you see, there is nowhere to hide

I`ll never understand
why they think we`re wrong
tryin? to change me,
tryin` to run my life
leave me alone
don`t want to be like you
don`t want to see like you
how can I believe in me

close your eyes, look into your mind
see yourself as you really are
as you really are.
Don`t be lost in your self sorrow
know the meaning of what you are.
No more lies, only you know the truth
no one but you
it has to be you.

In our lives, there are changes everyday
don`t run away
Just remember who you are
and what you can be
have faith and your dreams will come true

Sometimes you think, that tomorrow will never come
don`t let it get you down
Live your life in your own way
be what you want
have faith and your dreams will come true.
Trouble: The Truth Is, What Is

Again, the songtitle says the most important thing about the "message" of this song.
"The quieter you become, the more you can hear. Voices. In your head. Exclusively."

A road we could take if we're not careful:

Ayreon--Evil Devolution

The future's doored ingress! What lies beyond? One of you - ah, survived so much! - are you man
enough to force this door upon its golden hinge? You craved the answer - but can you bear the
truth? The door --! The Future --!

[futureman]
our hope's dissolved
for man's evolved into another state of being
have we "progressed" beyond the need of feeling?

a cyber-brain
the last in the chain of man/machine allience
have we become the victims of our science?

evil devolution
is this an illusion
out here in space

human humiliation
this mutation
of our human race

is this the end
will we transcend the need for human pleasures?
will we abandon all our earthly treasures?

will mankind yield
on the battlefield of natural selection
to an inorganic digital perfection?

evil devolution
is this an illusion
out here in space

human humiliation
this mutation
of our human race

Ayreon has many other lyrics that...while I would not consider them technically up there with some of the other bands I listen to, they end up reaching me more than other bands can. It's rare when someone manages a doomsday scenario, for instance, without casting blame on one country or person or another--in a weird way that makes the album age well because then you can see the applications to present-day situations instead of having it frozen in time. It also keeps the work accessible to people of all nations and many beliefs, instead of belittling those who disagree.

Opeth--Epilogue

[Instrumental]

There it was.
The final destiny.
A sunrise that never came,
still the night lamp that never faded away.
Farewell was the word,
and the afterglow was the brave morning.
Rising and telling everyone
about the beauty of its PROLOGUE.

These lyrics are never sung--perhaps the spirit of this album has moved beyond speech altogether. But I think these lyrics do a wonderful job of capturing the feeling of transition into the next world.

Dream Theater--Lines In The Sand

[Lyrics: John Petrucci]

Sometimes, for a moment of bliss
And the passion, we're craving
There's a message we miss
Sometimes when the spirits left alone
We must believe in something
To find if we've grown

Tragic reflex, shattered calm
Static progress, senses gone
Numb awareness, final psalm

Swept away with the tide
Through the holes in my hands
Crown of thorns
At my side drawing lines in the sand

Sometimes, if you're perfectly still
You can hear the virgin weeping
For the savior of your will
Sometimes, your castles in the air
And the fantasies you're seeking

Are the crosses you bear

Sacred conflict, blessed prize
Weeping crosses, stainless eyes
Desperate addict, faith disguised

Swept away with the tide
Through the holes in my hands
Crown of thorns
At my side drawing lines in the sand

We fabricate our demons
Invite them into our homes
Have supper with the aliens
And fight the war alone
We conjure up our skeletons
Enlist the den of theives
Frightened from our closets
Then sewn upon our sleeves

In the stream of consciousness
There is a river crying
Living comes much easier

Once we admit
We're dying

Sometimes, in the wreckage of our wake
There's a bitterness we harbor
And hate for hatred's sake
Sometime we dig an early grave
And crucify our instincts
For the hope we couldn't save

Sometimes a view from sinless eyes
Centers our perspective
And pacifies our cries
Sometimes the anguish we survive
And the mysteries we nurture
Are the fabrics of our lives

Swept away with the tide
Through the holes in my hands
Crown of thorns
At my side drawing lines in the sand

This is one I feel that I personally identify with...especially where it talks about the hollowness of discovering you've pursued false dreams that you constructed in your own head. Awakening to it is painful but what comes afterwards, to purge those things, is worth it.

He rides the wave, aspiring slave
The prince of darkness plays his games
You're hypnotized, under velvet skies
He breathes the red wind 'cross your eyes

Who leads you to the dark secret?
Who leads you to the dark secret?

Your life is lost, your soul is damned
But it feels too good to make a stand
Bad is bad, but this is worse
Let judgment come, you love this curse

When you look at me you're like a god
Swimming in the tide of light
Somersault into the flood
Watch as you unwind

Who leads you to the dark secret?
Who leads you to the dark secret?

Who is your mistress that leads you to the dark secret?
Who is your mistress who leads you to the dark secret?

Bruce Dickinson - Freak

I love it. It sends chills down my spine, like all Bruce's lyrics do, but even more. It's mysterious and abstract (wonderfully so), but you know it has a strong meaning. I think the poetry manage to touch a kind of truth, something fundamental about life, but yet something pretty unknown and dark...or, maybe i should say "obscure".
Unlock the door, and see the truth.
Then time is time again.

Sieges Even- The Lonely Views of Condors

Sometimes it's coming over me feels like a warm rain
Sometimes it's coming back to me like a memory
Just like the heat of endless winters
The cold of midday suns
It's the longest way a man can go
Sometimes it's more than I can take

Last night I spread my wings
Upon two worlds colliding
And somewhere in the monstrous distance
The world, it came down on me

Now I'm soaring on lost latitudes
A navigator with no chart
I looking down on all the colours that
Separate day from night

And all the demons in my head
Still permeate the sleep
I will feast upon the strange desires
Bring me something to keep the night away

And here I am
So close and yet too far away from you lose
And here I stand
Lost in the echoes of goodbyes
And here I am
Still with something left to lose

A world was lost the other day
And I'm choking on the sediments
And all the things that could have been would have been
Are the things that will not let me grow

Drifter through the bitter echoes
And the stillness far and wide
All alone with nameless phantoms
Chasing down a lonely road

Sometimes it's coming over me
Like a warm rain
Sometimes it's coming back to me
Like it's all destiny

And here I am
So close and yet too far away from you
And here I am
Lost in the echoes of goodbyes

Ayreon- Day Three: Pain

[Agony] I am pain
I am real. I'm not a dream
I'm the chain around your neck as you scream

Surrender now
You can't beat death at his ruthless game
Make your bow
Hang your head in shame

[Me] I can't believe there is no way out…
[Agony] You’ll I find you are wrong
[Me] You fill me with doubt…
[Agony] You were never that strong

[Agony] I am pain
I am the wound that never heals
It's all in vain
No compromise, no deals…

[Me] I can't believe this is the end
[Agony] It's written in stone
[Me] Where are my friends?
[Agony] You have always been alone!

[Rage] (Pain!) We lead
We hide as the pain leaves the rage inside
(Motion personified alpha)
Being here, welcomed by…a sane mind
A travelled lie

[Agony] I am pain
I am the end, I am your wraith
Nothing remains
I'm the loss of hope and faith

(Chorus one – Me and Agony)

[Rage] We lead, we hide as the pain leaves the rage inside
(Motion personified alpha)
Being here, welcomed by…a sane mind
A travelled lie
All the time, I had waited with rage
All the time, I was promised my salvation

[Love] I can't accept this, we will find a way
Out of this cesspool of doom and dismay
Beyond this dejection there's beauty and grace
A glorious future we long to embrace

[Rage] (Pain!) All the time, I have waited with rage
(Motion personified alpha)
All the time, I was promised my salvation
Though the towers of the city are denied to we men of clay
still we know we shall scale the heights some day.
Frightened in the silence -
frightened, but thinking very hard,
let us make computations of the stars.

Savatage - Believe

So after all those one night stands
You've ended up with heart in hand
A child alone... On your own... Retreating
Regretful for the things you're not
And all the dreams you haven't got
Without a home... A heart of stone... Lies bleeding
And for all the roads you followed
And for all you did not find
And for all the things you had to leave behind

I am the way
I am the light
I am the dark inside the night
I hear your hopes
I feel your dreams
And in the dark I hear your screams
Don't turn away
Just take my hand
And when you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is... Believe

Your childhood eyes were so intense
While bartering your innocence
For bits of string... The grown-up wings... You needed
But when you had to add them up
You found that they were not enough
To get you in... Pay for sins... Repeated
And for all the years you borrowed
And for all the tears you cryed
And for all the fears you had to keep inside

I am the way
I am the light
I am the dark inside the night
I hear your hopes
I feel your dreams
And in the dark I hear your screams
Don't turn away
Just take my hand
And when you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
All I ask of you is... Believe!, yeah

I never wanted to know, never wanted to see
I wasted my time till time wasted me
Never wanted to go, always wanted to stay
'Cause the person I am, are the parts that I play
So I plot and I plan, hope and I scheme
To the lure of a night filled with unfinished dreams
And I'm holding on tight to a world gone astray
As they charge me for years... I can't pay!, yeah

I am the way
I am the light
I am the dark inside the night
I hear your hopes
I feel your dreams
And in the dark I hear your screams
Don't turn away
Just take my hand
And when you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is... Believe
...Believe...

VNV Nation - Carbon

A million points of light ascending to the sky
Monuments in darkness standing watch until the sun will rise
Screaming to an emptiness of how we deified ourselves
With our hands over eyes, claiming all of creation.
What inspires in us this madness
That our existence should be defined
By a light that can’t be seen by anyone?
What inspires in us this madness
That our existence should be defined
By a light that we can’t see?

A million points of light ascending to the sky
Monuments in darkness standing watch until the sun will rise
I can’t see this all as progress
How did we come this far when we see ourselves as deities,
Claim nature for ourselves?
By our actions we betray the instincts in our race
By our blindness and stupidity
We kill everything, we kill everything.

Can someone see our self destruction?
Are we reminding ourselves that our existence is so delicate
That without this light we are no more?
That without this light we’ve made we are no more.

A million points of light ascending to the sky
Monuments in darkness standing watch until the sun will rise
We torch the earth until it bleeds, rain ashes from the sky
Just to make a light that no one can see
We cut the earth until it bleeds, rain ashes from the sky
Just to make a light that no one can see.
Just to make a light. Just to make a light
We kill everything
By our blindness and stupidity
We kill everything.

In a thousand years what will be our legacy
A million lights that no one could see?

A million points of light.

A song I have loved a lot for its lyrics since the first time I heard it, which seems to be of a somehow spiritual kind of beauty. To me it seems quite clearly a critique of civilization in general, and mankinds arrogance and self-proclaimed hegemony over nature in particular.

I wonder about the 'million lights that no one could see' and the 'light that can't be seen by anyone', though. I have a strong feeling this is a metaphor of some sort, but don't really have an idea of what exactly.

And how about the title? Reading the lyrics as I do from a 'critique of civilization' point of view, it seems quite logical that this would refer to fossile fuels and our dependence thereof to maintain our hegemonic status, and also the folly of doing so because of limited availability etc. Or am I reaching too far here?

Thoughts are welcome. (Including, of course, thoughts along a completely different line than the line I have been thinking on.)
-- Martin Walkyier

I like these lyrics because to me, they're all about finding the strength within yourself to defeat adversity. Somewhat simplistic perhaps, but, to the point.

We Are Strong (by SAXON)

[Byford/Quinn]

Life keeps kicking you down
But you come back for more
You take all the knocks
Pick yourself up off the floor
Everyone's looking for someone
To hold in the night
Believe in yourself, stand tall
And take up the fight

We are strong
We will survive
We are strong
We will survive

Somebody gets all the breaks
But it's never you
Maybe today is the day
You'll pull through
Everyone's chasing their dream
At the end of the rainbow
You gotta follow your heart
That's where you have to go

We are strong
We will survive
We are strong
We will survive

Battered and torn
Ride out the storm
Break through the clouds of night
And head on home

Life keeps kicking you down
But you come back for more
You take all the knocks
Pick yourself up off the floor
Everyone's looking for someone
To hold in the night
Believe in yourself, stand tall
And take up the fight

We are strong
We will survive
We are strong
We will survive

And this one is inspiring in a similar way. And also because, Kai rules!

Fight ((by GAMMA RAY)

[Music by: Richter / Lyrics by: Richter]

I see a world that`s full of fake and disillusions
I see no move in history
Where am I meant to be?
What is my destiny?
The path I`ve chosen now has lead me to a wall

And though my mind perceived I still was a blind man
And not the one who understands
For life`s a mystery...
Of things your eyes can`t see...
Faith is the key to inspiration!

[Chorus 1]
Carry on!
Carry on my dear old friend
Carry on for there`s love that never ends
Carry on... carry on, carry on, carry on

So I began to trust my instinctive feelings
To live in truth and harmony
One day you realize...
It`s right before your eyes...
Truth is the key to inspiration!

[Chorus 2]
Carry on!
Carry on my dear old friend
Carry on for love will never end
Carry on... carry on, carry on, carry on

In this world
Faith, hope and charity
Lead us to the one

[Chorus 3]
Carry on!
Carry on my dear old friend
Carry on my love will never end
Carry on... carry on, carry on

Carry on and you will see
Life ain`t no misery
Carry on, carry on, carry on

Carry on!
You`ll see the light
Your star is shining bright
Carry on, carry on!

And these lyrics seem to invoke feelings of freedom, courage, and renewal (amongst fantasies of intergalactic sojourns), like a phoenix arising from the ashes, rising above it all, with enthusiasm and vigor.

Thunderbird (by IRON SAVIOR)

Cruising the stars
riding on cosmic winds
into the open
to challenge the great unknown
Excitement electrifies
willing to pay the price
to seek and explore
intergalactical miracles and more

Final frontier
how many secrets do you hide
so let the journey begin
in dignity and pride

Riding the wind on a thunderbird
travelling the road
that no one has travelled before
Riding the wind on a thunderbird
A universe so magical
miracles and mythical
Thunderbird
take us there

The quest has begun
and we are the chosen ones
chosen to be
the pioneers of humanity
Thunderbird, take us away
take us ashore
and let us stray
among the wounders
of time and space
to gain the knowledge
of all our race

Destination
unknown
The memory of all we've been leaving behind
stays on our mind

Riding the wind on a thunderbird
....
Thunderbird
take us out

Cruising the stars
on cosmic winds
let us explore
the miracles and more
Thunderbird
take us away, show us the realm
show us the wonders
we're holding the helm

Final frontier
how many secrets do you hide
cosmic creation
we're bowing to you
in dignity and pride

Riding the wind on a thuderrbird
....
Thunderbird
Riding the wind on a thunderbird
to boldly go
where no one has gone before
....
Thunderbird engage
take us away
let us stray among the start
sgow us the wonders
show us the miracles
take us away
Thunderbird

Carbon fires fuel the manmade lights that shine on the surface of the earth. They radiate out into the darkness of space (ascend to the sky), where no one can see them. Without a god or some aliens to watch from "outside earth's fragile atmosphere" they just "scream to an emptiness" about how much energy we burn through.

They say that life's a game, then they take the board away.
They give you masks and costumes and an outline of the story
Then leave you all to improvise their vicious cabaret...

Well, having heard thousands of Metal bands over the course of my life, I can easily say that martin Walkyier of Skyclad/Sabbat has wrote consistantly the best lyrics I've ever heard. His pun-filled lyrics filled with social commentary, nature-saving innuendo and personal stories from his own life are something to behold to anyone that reads them. In fact, I dare say that Martin hasn't wrote a bad lyric, ever. And I can't say that about many writers, if any. Overall, I am more attracted to the lyrics about how mankind is destroying Mother Earth... like theone TAJ posted above, but it's so hard to pick just one. That said, I think the best lyrics he ever wrote were for "The Sinful Ensemble", which takes a vasta array of histories evil-doers and puts them in a humorous light whenlooking back on them with a modern perspective.

"The Sinful Ensemble" Written by Martin Walkyier (Skyclad).

Are you ready for the Sinful Ensemble?
Good clean fun - just a bit of rough and tumble.
Dead dictators out on a 'lads night'
ten pints later you'll see a flashing blue light.

Ever wondered where the evil dead go?
There's a little place called "Nightmare Scenario"
Unlicenced establishment for former world powers,
where the drinks are cheap - and it's open all hours.

Bonaparte's on brandy - he swills it down his throat,
Hitler sips a Pilsner while he tells a racist joke.
Mussolini leers at Maggie serving at the bar,
Stalin's out the back trying to sell a dodgy motor car.

Dear God above (if you exist),
hope you see the funny side to this
Now don't get cross - don't bite your nails,
oh, Son of Man your mission failed.

Are you ready for the Sinful Ensemble?
Good clean fun - just a bit of rough and tumble.
Dead dictators out on a 'lads night'
ten pints later you'll see a flashing blue light.

Herod's in the family room to baby sit the first born,
Mengele's got a Gladstone bag of cotton wool and chloroform.
Vlad impales glace cherries on a stick just for a lark,
when Pol Pot turns the lights out they'll play murder in the dark.

Are you ready for the Sinful Ensemble?
Good clean fun - just a bit of rough and tumble.
Dead dictators out on a 'lads night'
ten pints later you'll see a flashing blue light.

Genghis Khan just parked his lunch all over Nero's belly,
while the lions beat the christians thirty - nil live on the telly.
Caligula kills 'My Way' on the karaoke stage -
young 'Chezzy' Borgia's barred for life for drinking under age.

This is far more than just a joke.
Can't you see the fire for the smoke?
Choose any public house you please
and find dictators such as these.

Are you ready for the Sinful Ensemble?
Good clean fun - just a bit of rough and tumble.
Dead dictators out on a 'lads night'
ten pints later you'll see a flashing blue light.

Hell is where the heart lies -
(in Purgatory's borders).
The great thing 'bout eternity -
they never call last orders!
"The Simpsons is not real life"-Skyclads mom.

Savatage - Surrender

When in your life did you surrender
Late in the night do you remember

What were the dreams that you betrayed then
Would you go back if you could save them now

Did you believe there was something more
Waiting behind some forgotten door
Or was that all long before

You felt the pressure grow inside your brain
Where every nerve is on fire
You start to wonder if you're going insane
It's not a fate you desired

Time is running down

Moments of reason that we hope to find
Are we a thought somewhere in god's mind
A work of art that he has never signed
No

Children and mirrors have no memory
They reflect us for that is all they see
They are the us that is still yet to be
And so we carry on

The clock is ticking and your growing afraid
That the end will be violent
You walk the edges all around your own grave
And the gods they are silent
Or can not be found

Searching your mind for correspondence from
Joseph and mary and their only son
Is their silence something you have done

No

And in the end what have you defied
To end up so nearly crucified
Just let me know when you decide
That all hope is gone

Come and see him dying
For it's really quite a show
Walking on a wire
Though he never seems to know
Even when he's falling
You can see a little smile
Figures that he's flying
Only for a little while

The ground is rushing towards him
But he never sees it there
Lives his life in pieces
Always taking every dare
What will be the ending
Well I'm sure that I don't know
The ground is getting closer
Come and see the show
See the show
See the show
See the show
---

One of the few really good song from Poets and Madmen.
Nothing is sacred when no one is saved, Nothing's forever so count your days
Nothing is final and no one is real, Pray for tomorrow and find your empty still

Jethro Tull - Old Ghosts

Hair stands high on the cat's back like
a ridge of threatening hills.
Sheepdogs howl, make tracks and growl
their tails hanging low.
And young children falter in their games
at the altar of life's hide-and-seek
between tall pillars, where Sunday-night killers
in grey raincoats peek.

Misty colours unfold a backcloth cold
fine tapestry of silk
I draw around me like a cloak
and soundless glide a-drifting
on eddies whirled in beech leaves furled
brown and gold they fly
in the warm mesh of sunlight
sifting now from a cloudless sky.

I'll be coming again like an old dog in pain
Blown through the eye of the hurricane
Down to the stones where old ghosts play.

Jethro Tull - Dun Ringill

Clear light on a slick palm
as I mis-deal the day
Slip the night from a shaved pack
make a marked card play
Call twilight hours down
from a heaven home
high above the highest bidder
for the good Lord's throne
In the wee hours I'll meet you
down by Dun Ringill
oh, and we'll watch the old gods play
by Dun Ringill
We'll wait in stone circles
`til the force comes through
lines joint in faint discord
and the stormwatch brews
a concert of kings
as the white sea snaps
at the heels of a soft prayer
whispered
In the wee hours I'll meet you
down by Dun Ringill
oh, and I'll take you quickly
by Dun Ringill.

Jethro Tull - Broadsword

I see a dark sail on the horizon
set under a black cloud that hides the sun.
Bring me my broadsword and clear understanding.
Bring me my cross of gold as a talisman.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.

Bring me my broadsword and clear understanding.
Bring me my cross of gold as a talisman.
Bless with a hard heart those who surround me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind. Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on for the motherland.

I see a dark sail on the horizon
set under a black cloud that hides the sun.
So, bring me my broadsword and clear understanding.
Bring me my cross of gold as a talisman.
So bring me my broadsword
And a cross of gold as a talisman.

The Who - In The Ether

In the ether
I hang suspended
I wait for you
And I know you're near
In this high heaven
My world's upended
I feel no passion
I feel no fear

I'm dizzy with love
But you never appear
In the gloom of this room
Of this cell down here

I know this place
Isn't truly real
And that like my love
It expands and sprays
The light will find me
Will bend toward me
Yet I'm marooned
In a billion days

I'm drunk with you
And I can't explain
Who or where I am
Or how I'm in pain

Rocking and rocking me
Rhythm is shocking me
Just like a child in your fist
You are knocking me
Rocking and rocking
Autistic, caged I am
Rocking and rocking
And rocking enraged

I am drunk with you
And I can't explain
Who or where I am
Or how I'm in pain

In the ether
In the ether

In the ether
I wait for you
Hanging in this mist
That I know's unreal
There is nothing there
There's no you, no me
Even though it's crazy
I still appeal

This is heavenly hell
I appear insane
I have no idea
Who there is to blame

George Harrison - The Pirate Song

I want to be a pirate
A pirates life for me
All my friends are pirates
And sail the b. b. sea
Ive got a jolly roger
Its black and white and vast
Get out of your skull and crossbones
And Ill run it up your mast

With a yo-ho-ho
And a ya-ha-ha
And a ye-hee-hee-ho-hum
With a yo-ho-ho
And a ya-ha-ha
And a yum-yum-jum-jum

Heavy Metal! or no metal at all...
Come with me and join me, a new life's waiting for you. Jump through the mirror, leave fear behind...

Emperor - He Who Sought The Fire

and again he came to cherish
the comfort of mysteries
inspiring and far away
timeless in the moment
they painted immortality

forever drawn towards the centre
of this ensorcelling flame
yet, still in fear of the sacrifice
it would take to know its name

"Do not despair", said the mystery
"You will always have a friend in me
until the day you break my code
then I will be gone and you are free...
...to manifest another"

towards the heavens he did aspire
now he shall burn who sought the fire
some will mourn the ashes cold
while others behold the inferno unfold

forever drawn towards the centre
of this ensorcelling flame
yet, still in fear of the sacrifice
it would take to know its name

now he shall burn who sought the fire
to manifest another

Actually I kinda relate to this song somehow
made me think of the situation I've had with my ex-girlfriend.
I took pleasure in not fully understanding her, and in trying to. Though she was and still is quite a disturbed individual that generally hurt me.
I thought that once I'll understand her I'll be free of her somehow.
Anyway it's a good song...

Dio - Otherworld+Magica - reprise

Turn round slowly
Tell us what you see
Oh no - The fly got the spider
And now he's chasing me

Change comes slowly
But this is what you'll be
Somehow it snows in the summer
And the sun is freezing me, oh

Pain comes easy
If pleasure will let go
Oh oh - I still remember
And this is how I know

Rain falls slowly
Here it cuts you down
Oh no - We're all one another
Oh no - I'm caught in an otherworld

Rainbows and blue skies
Are black and white
Killed in their sleep by the queen
We have forsaken
Beginnings and taken the end - Amen

We've been forsaken
Beginnings and given the end - Amen

Time moves slowly
But here it never ends
Oh oh - We're all one another
Oh no - I'm caught in an otherworld

...
And the games still go on
With a warning to the bishop from the pawn
No one sees an angel till it smashes to the ground
And then you run somewhere
And leave it lying there

Then on we sail
Never thinking that the wind could ever fail
No one gets to heaven till they've lived awhile in hell
And even then it's rare
That you'll be going there

I just like these lyrics...

The Offspring - Conspiracy Of One
Red over white
It‘s one last fatal scene
Brought on by
someone unseen
Moving on their own

Bring on the night
And bring us all to our knees
All are gone and
none agreed
One who acts alone

Nobody wins
Nobody hears us fall
Nobody wins
When it‘s done
Conspiracy of one

Well...
I don't really care that this song is about terrorism and stuff. I mainly like how it's built:
It's very symmetrical. Done in 2 halves 1 minute each. Each part is made of 5 lines. First one is A B C B A. Second part is C C so lo C C.
And the words fit in nicely for me.

Anathema - Cries On The Wind

Reaching out...
How things look different on the way down
Disillusioned, I've lost desire
Will I burn in the unforgiving fire?

From the flames, I walk away
I've found a way to erase the pain
An empty bottle, my receptacle
A guardian angel called escape

Don't dwell on the forthcoming
As I know it won't be happening
And you know, when I'm gone
You'll hear my cries on the wind

I don't like most of their lyrics that much, but I like these somehow.
never tried to understand them deeply.

Dark Tranquillity - Hedon

Enter Suicidal Angels;

How hungry we've become;
like animals naked in shame
Fed with the hooves of apocalypse
that galloped down, disordered worlds behind

From word to a word I was led to a word
that spanned over cultures in rage
Crimson masses, sleeped in decadence
holding our tongues to the thirsty sun
So, it the future still open?
Then enter, hornet, from our hive-dark hearts
to draw down the end from within

We need not the horns
that emanate from our warty, haunted bodies
severed and numbered they are

Nihilist, Hedon
the priceless art of their lives
Sorrow is a wing laid atop their heads.
skin deep, we carve our immeasurable sorrow
in the fold of your shivering arms

Hedon,
Your chindren wild
and filled with death

# Jupiter in our unforgiving eves:
a pandemonium of bodies and gold
Eager, as a part of your face
and the sickness attached to your skin (stone)
as the wine-rush,
changing from androgynous wombs
to open free the lid of pain #

Hedon,
rinsed in post-human shadows
a monument scorned by the teeth of time
Stale-faced keeper of secrets,
loaded with implosive fire
the whore that carried the apostle
to the mating point on the graves of giants

We look at you, afraid
to see what we really are.

They always have awsome lyrics...
And I think this one is a bit better than most of them.
I also like the ones that were already posted.

My Dying Bride - Your River

Your bloodied body is what I cling to
In powerful rain, they laid their heads to die
Let your dark, thirsty eyes drink deep the sights of me
It's sad that, in our blindness, we gather thorns for flowers

Your river holds a feast of danger
The suffering you have had to bear
I'd die for that moment one more time
The loved one falls below your ideals

Pleasure too safely enjoyed lacks zest
The brave lick their sickening lips
Rigid, handsome and a poet
A king in his passionate castle

Where now? Feed me! Hold me! Save me!
Save yourself!
Where now? Which way? Dear god, show me
Take your own
Struggle free! Arise! You're Ruined!
Stand down!
Your kin, piled thick around you
Save yourself!

Another lovely song...
There used to be a big fuss once long ago around My Dying Bride's lyrics that were supposed to be much better than Blind Guardian's. I still dissagree, and I don't think that aside from being well written MDB's lyrics are usually worth much. Sometimes being well-written is quite a lot though (even if there's no interesting general idea or anything).

I'll settle for these for now.
"As darkness came it brought along silence.
Yet silence also bears madness.
Silence surrounds me - a deathly silence"...

Aerosmith - Dream On Lyrics

every time that I look in the mirror
all these lines on my face getting clearer
the past is gone
it went by like dusk to dawn
isn't that the way
everybody's got their dues in life to pay

yeah, I know nobody knows
where it comes and where it goes
I know it's everybody's sin
you got to lose to know how to win

half my life's in books' written pages
live and learn from fools and from sages
you know it's true
all the things come back to you

sing with me, sing for the year
sing for the laughter and sing for the tear
sing with me, if it's just for today
maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away

dream on, dream on, dream on,
dream yourself a dream come true
dream on, dream on, dream on,
and dream until your dream comes true

This lyrics describe a big mistake I make everytime I forget to take care of it. When I notice I´m already doing it for so much time.

The wall inside, he built to defend himself.
He needs to hide, to keep independency.

The race is on, it can't be won.

A fortress in you head
one step among the dead.
Security for fear,
a fortress, caging in
for what you're here.

The pain inside, disappoinments everyday.
To keep his pride he can't find a better way (than)
to lock his mind, though he'll lose life.

A fortress in you head
one step among the dead.
Security for fear,
a fortress, caging in
for what you're here.

A fortress in you head
one step among the dead.
Security for fear,
a fortress in you head, oh.
A fortress caging in,
unreal behind your grin.
Security is lie,
a fortress caging in untill you die.

Here's another Skyclad song, thought this one wasn't written by Martin Walkyier.

Like... A Ballad For The Disenchanted

Like the promise of a grey day dawning
Like all the dreams I've never had
Like I'm working like the beast of burden
Just like Sisyphos I know where I stand

Like I need another rude awakening
With all your caterwauling in my ears
Like I know where all the money comes from
Just like the man said 'Here my dear'

Like I need another cute Demelza
Like I need to be a gentlemen
Like I need another sweet Lolita
Like I need another Jezebel

'Love is the flame of burning brandy'
I take a drink from your poisoned cup
Like I need another Mata Hari
Like I need to see those eyes close-up

Like I need another 'brief encounter'
Like I need another fresh start
Like I understand your indignation
Like you care about my wounded heart

Like I need another misadventure
Like I need another dead-end trail
Like I need another misdirection
Like I need another fairy-tale

Like I bring a plague on all your houses
Just like I'm Herod or 'the king of Misrule'
Like I need another stark reminder
Like I'm Jonah or The April Fool

Like I need to make another swan-song
Like I need another 'sordid boon'
Like I need another born-again virgin
Cut my heart out with a wooden spoon

Like a ballad for the disenchanted
Like a sonnet for a long-lost friend
Like a requiem played on my heartstrings
Like you're the last word and this is the end

They say that there's a broken light for every heart on Broadway.
They say that life's a game, then they take the board away.
They give you masks and costumes and an outline of the story
Then leave you all to improvise their vicious cabaret...

Still the goddamn Batman.

STORMWITCH - Tears By The Firelight

Tears by the firelight, he won't be home tonight
The Royal order reached him now to fight for the land
Eyes at the window-pane, staring through pouring rain
All the room is cold and grey, the fire burns bright

Every night there is no one beside
She's counting the hours, the memories burn
Day after day all her thoughts slip away
She waits for the one to return

Almost a year has gone, the battles are raging on
She has got no sign of life, no news at all
She wants to know his stand far in the foreign land
For King and Country he has left, the King's sleeping tight

Every night there is no one beside . . .

Tears by the firelight, he won't be home tonight
Sparks of hope begin to glow, the end of the war
Church-bells proclaim the peace, they welcome the returnees
"The victory is ours!" but she thinks, "What's mine?"

Every night there is no one beside . . .

Tears by the light, the fire burns down
Words black as grave's ground, seals red as blood
By the light, life's found an end
The parchment is still in her hand.

I like this song because it has so much of that romantic medieval touch :)
I'm really interested in medieval culture and lifestyle and this kind of songs are really special to me. :)
I just looooooove it :D
It is so sad, but beautiful :(

Yet another Skyclad song. I think Martin was the most clever lyricist ever. Perhaps not the best, whatever that means, but certainly the most clever.

Thanks for all the lyrics posted alread. A bunch I've seen already, but new light has seen my eyes this night, and I thank you all for this!

Helium:

Pray for my poor melancholy soul,
I've cried so many tears inside -
My head's a goldfish bowl.
A mood so deep - so far above you all,
With no one there to catch me if i fall.

This is your man in the street reporting,
And so far all we've got
is that a regular guy is on a ledge up high -
He's had enough of the irregular lot.
And in the World exclusive live tonight
Brought to you via satelilite -
The last sane man heard frankly speaking
'bout the 'ups and downs' of leaping
He says...

[Chorus:]
I'm lighter than air - i haven't a care,
Still gravity poulls me under,
Credibility gaps - gullability fills -
They were bringing me down (no wonder)
Square pegs, round holes, last dregs, own goals
Monkey puzzle my fist won't fot inside
Every day nothing new, black and white deja-vu,
Makes me feel i wanna spread my wings and glide.

Should i look - should i leap from this unfairy story?
My life and my filofax flashing before me
Fly like a rock from the roof to the basement,
The last thing to go through my mind was the pavement!

(Falling out of love with life.)

Here's the latest news flash update
on the wall street situation
Seems he wants to have his song played
Live upon our T.V station
It's a lyric he just wrote
The bleatings of a social scapegoat,
Thirty years under the weather -
At the end of a SHORT TETHER
it goes...

I'm lighter than air - i haven't a care,
Still gravity poulls me under,
Credibility gaps - gullability fills -
They were bringing me down (no wonder)
Square pegs, round holes, last dregs, own goals
Monkey puzzle my fist won't fit inside
Every day nothing new, black and white deja-vu,
Makes me feel i wanna spread my wings and glide.
My Karma ran over your Dogma.

Soon I discovered that this rock thing was true
Jerry lee lewis was the devil
Jesus was an architect previous to his career as a prophet
All of a sudden, I found myself in love with the world
So there was only one thing that I could do
Was ding a ding dang my dang a long ling long

Ding dang a dong bong bing bong
Ticky ticky thought of a gun
Everytime I try to do it all now baby
Am I on the run
Why why why why why baby
If its so evil then?
Give me my time, with all my power
Give it to me all again (wow)
Ding a ding a dang a dong dong ding dong
Every where I go

Everytime you tell me baby
When I settle down
Got to get me a trailer park
And hold my world around
Why why why why?

Ding ding donga dong dong ding dong
Dingy dingy son of a gun
Half my time I tell you baby
Never am I all for sure
Why why why why why baby
Sicky sicky from within
Everytime I stick my finger on in ya
Youre a wild wild little town bitch
Now how bout ding a dang dong dong dong ling long
Dingy a dingy dong a down

Everytime you tell me baby
When I settle down
Got to get me a trailer park
And hold my world around
Why why why why?

In my dang a ding a ding a ding dong
A sticky sticky son of a gun
Ding a danga danga dong dong ding dong
Why why never know
Why why wack a dong a dang ding dong
Then you take it on the bill
Ding dang dong dont dong
Whoa!

I wanna love ya!

Why why why, why why darling
Do you do you tell me to play?
Half the time I talk about it all now baby
You know what Im talkin about I said
Why why why itll
Ticky ticky ticky ticky
Son of a gun
Ding ding dong a bong bong bing bong
Ticky ticky thought of a gun

Bing bing bang a bang a bang bing bong bing a bing bang a bong
Binga bing a bang a bong bong bing bong bing banga bong

Bing bing bang a bong bong bing bing binga binga banga bong
Bing bing bang a bang bang bing bong

Aarrrhhhh...

Ticky ticky thought of a gun
Everytime I try to do it all now baby

Why why why
Itll ticky ticky ticky ticky ticky ticky
Dawn of a gun
Bing bing bang a bong a bong bing bang a
Ticky ticky thought of a gun
Bing bip bip a bop bop boom bam
Ticky ticky through the day

If you got a doubt bout baby
The memory is on the bed
Why why why why why
Darlin uh it dont know
When my time is on
Might tell me never do it on his own
If my time was all as is yours
Make me burn a wish
When my time with you is brutish
No Ill never not ever

Why why why why why why baby heavy hell
Alone and its here its this thunder
The thunder oh thunder
Oh!

Jesus built my car
Its a love affair
Mainly jesus and my hot rod

Proudly, without God, I conquer!

queen - i'm going slightly mad

when the outside temperature rises
and the meaning is oh so clear
one thousand and one yellow daffodils
begin to dance in front of you - oh dear
are they trying to tell you something?
you're missing that one final screw
you're simply not in the pink my dear
to be honest you haven't got a clue
i'm going slightly mad
i'm going slightly mad
it finally happened - happened
it finally happened - ooh oh
it finally happened - i'm slightly mad
oh dear!
i'm one card short of a full deck
i'm not quite the shilling
one wave short of a shipwreck
i'm not at my usual top billing
i'm coming down with a fever
i'm really out to sea
this kettle is boiling over
i think i'm a banana tree
oh dear, i'm going slightly mad
i'm going slightly mad
it finally happened, happened
it finally happened uh huh
it finally happened i'm slightly mad - oh dear!
i'm knitting with only one needle
unraveling fast its true
i'm driving only three wheels these days
but my dear how about you?
i'm going slightly mad
i'm going slightly mad
it finally happened
it finally happened oh yes
it finally happened
i'm slightly mad!
just very slightly mad!
and there you have it!

this one is from their last album. freddie mercury's disease was at stake at those times and I guess this song is what he feels about it.

and there you have it!

Two songs about two of my favourite topics - Wizards and Warriors - Hawkwind style! 8)
----------------------------------------------------------
Hawkwind - The Wizard Blew His Horn
(Moorcock / House / King / Powell)

The Great Hound Barked
And the world turned white
The Great Hound Sighed
And the forest died
The Wizard Blew His Horn
The Wizard Blew His Horn
The snow snake hissed
And the world turned round
The snow snake grinned
In his fine cold sin
When The Wizard Blew His Horn
The Wizard Blew His Horn
The horse wept blood
And the earth did groan
The tall horse reared
From a lake of tears
To seek a Champion
To seek a Champion
The world was bleak
And the Earth did fear
The Wizard's Horn
The magic Horn
So it screamed for a champion
It screamed for a champion
The eagle laughed
And the world grew black
It stretched giant claws
And it snatched the Law
And the Champion stirred in his sleep
The Champion stirred in his sleep

---------------------------------------------------------

Hawkwind - Warriors
(Moorcock / House / King / Powell)

We are the warriors at the edge of time
We are Humanity's scythe to sweep this way and that
And cut the Enemy down as weeds
We are Humanity's spade to dig up the roots wherever they have
grown
We are Humanity's fire to burn the waste to the finest ash
We are the wind which will blow the ash away
As if it had never existed
We will destroy those Enemies
But we must first know the Enemies
And the Enemies are the devils that hide in our minds
And make us less than happy
They make us less than happy
We are the warriors at the edge of time
We are the veterans of a savage truth
We are the lost
We are the last
We are the betrayed
We are the betrayed
We are the betrayed................

Bob Dylan - Masters Of War

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

The words speak for themselves, no further explanation is needed.

New Model Army - Western Dream

Gather round and listen and I'll tell you how's it's done
How they manage to make idiots out of everyone
Take a human population with their hunger and their pain
And the weaknesses that cripple them again and again
Invent a splendid party where dreams can be won
And with bright flashing lights, the heartaches are gone
With sex and with money and with everything for free
Then show tantalising glimpses every night on TV.
Watch the dirty hands that laboured hard for you
Stretching out like children for a crumb that they can chew
Give a car and video and a little bit to spare
And go on promising that more could all be theirs
Ch: All lies, all lies, all schemes all schemes
Every winner means a loser in the western dream

The producer swears silently it cannot be heard
And the camera crew are muttering those four letter words
Another take is needed so the show can go on
With a patronising smile and a popular song
They tell when to laugh, they tell you when to cheer
So the audience at home will get the right idea
They watch like children left out of a playground gang
Conforming their lives the way they hope will get them in
Ch: All lies, all lies, all schemes all schemes
Every winner means a loser in the western dream

It seems to me sometimes there's only two ways to choose
In this whirlpool made of a thousand years
Either live in these ghettos and know your place
Or you trample over everyone in the human race
I wish we could find another way to go
Without the Ghost of Cain in everything we do
The bitterness in failure and the dirt in success
This is our choice
You charge each other for the time and breath it takes to say 'good morning',
But the truth is slowly dawning -- things are getting out of hand,
We all pursue our shattered dreams along the roads to our own ruin --
Watch our empires sink and wash away like castles made of sand.
And so cast off the lies that are your lives and find the truth within.

"I am hatred, seeping blood.
The rain, the flood, the grief.
I am rage becoming flesh.
A dismal, ravaged life.
This is pain, a wall of tears.
And my tears are my truest friends.
This, my heart, a dying sun.
A flower fading to black.
Oh God, why have you forsaken me?
In this darkness, called my mind.
The waste you left for me.
I'm your shit, your verbal smut.
Your twisted world recapped.
This is you, your lifeless soul.
Your sick and fucked-up lies.
In my world your love is death.
Your disease, your skin that burns.
Oh God, why have you forsaken me?
You tied my limbs and buried me alive.
And piled this frozen mud.
You watched me die with lustrous eyes.
As all your words grew stale.
You mocked my care and stained my mind.
You yearned for me to fail."

-Celtic Frost: Ground

Describes quite well my current general mood. :?

this is as much for the delivery as for the lyrical content. one of my favs

Wintersun~ Death and the Healing

A windstorm dropped a bird from the sky
It fell to the ground and it's wings broke and died
But when the time got by, back to sky it flied
'cause the wings healed in time and the bird was I

Time is the death and the healing
Take your last breath, 'cause death is deceiving
Time is the past, now and tomorrow
Days fly so fast and it leaves me so hollow

A snowstorm blew inside a wolf's eyes
And the frozen tears covered all the mountainsides
But then the time got by and the wolf died
And someday that wolf would be I

Not the greatest all around song, but this one has such powerful lyrics. This one was written for the little guy--No I'm not talking about Ronnie James Dio.

Iced Earth~ Stand Alone

Listen not to ones who preach
Those who feel you're a freak
Everything about you is wrong
You must be sick, you don't belong

Father said, worry not what they say
Use your mind, your own free will
In a time when everyone follows
Ignorance can kill

They only say what they want you to hear
Half-truths have been twisted to conceal your fate
In a world of spoon-fed emotion
Intelligence can save

Stand alone
Hear what I say
Stand alone
You will seize the day

Son, say what you mean, don't be afraid
Tell them how you feel, hear what I say
Be true to yourself and true to your own
Your spirit will crush the hearts of stone

Stand alone
Hear what I say
Stand alone
It's a leap of faith
"Compare your life to mine and then kill yourself" -Bender

Queen - '39

In the year of thirty-nine
Assembled here the volunteers
In the days when lands were few
Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn
The sweetest sight ever seen
And the night followed day
And the story tellers say
That the score brave souls inside
For many a lonely day
Sailed across the milky seas
Ne'er looked back never feared never cried

Don't you hear my call
Though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I'll take your hand
In the land that our grand-children knew

In the year of thirty-nine
Came a ship in from the blue
The volunteers came home that day
And they bring good news
Of a world so newly born
Though their hearts so heavily weigh
For the earth is old and grey
little darlin' we'll away
But my love this cannot be
Oh so many years have gone
Though i'm older but a year
Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me

Don't you hear my call
Though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I'll take your hand
In the land that our grand-children knew

Don't you hear my call
Though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
All your letters in the sand
Cannot heal me like your hand
For my life, still ahead, pity me.

A melancholic folky song about space travel and time dilatation. Musically a bit unusual for Queen - but still one of my favourite Queen tracks, and lyrically very original and clever, yet beautiful. As Brian May said in an interview:
Brian May wrote:It's a science fiction story. It's the story about someone who goes away and leaves his family and... because of the time dilation effect, when you go away, the people on Earth have aged a lot more than he has when he comes home. He's aged a year and they've aged 100 years. So, instead of coming back to his wife, he comes back to his daughter and he can see his wife in his daughter... a strange story. I think, also, I had in mind a story of Herman Hesse, which I think is called "The River". A man leaves his hometown and has lots of travels and then comes back and observes his hometown from the other side of the river. He sees it in a different light, having been away and experienced all those different things. He sees it in a very illuminating way, 'cause I felt a little bit like that about my home at the time as well, having been away and seen this vastly different world of rock music... totally different from the way I was brought up, and I had those feelings about home.

In the Year 2525" Based on the performance by Zager & Evans
"In the Year 2025" Parody by okayokay

"In the year 2025
If music's still alive
If movies can survive
We may find

In the year 2035
Ain't gonna be no metal groups to see live
Every hip-hop hit song is played
On the radio ten times a day

In the year 2045
Ain't gonna be no film on which to decide
You won't find a film to see
No classic horror DVD's

In the year 2055
Every Oscar winning film makes us cry
The movies halfway worth an hour or two
On DVD for $1.92

In the year 2065
Ain't gonna be no decent rock bands alive
You'll take your son and your daughter too
To N Sync live from Katmandu, whoa-oh

In the year 2110
There will be nothing but hip-hop by then
Maybe fans of decent music will say
"Rock "n' roll has met its Judgment Day"

In the year 2210
Moviegoers shake their mighty heads
They'll surely say, "I'm pissed how film has grown,"
Boycott the theaters and make their own, whoa-oh

In the year 2995
I'm kinda wonderin' if music's gonna be alive
Rejecting every upcoming metal band
And the won't be but nothing' whoa-oh

Now it's been 1000 years
Rockers cried a billion tears
For music we once knew
Rock and roll is through
But each and every night
They wish upon starlight
So very far away
For return of yesterday

In the year 2025
If music's still alive
If movies can survive
We may find
(fade out)"

Hammerheart from Bathory. The best epic balland(after Bard's song)

Now that the wind called my name
And my star had faded now hardly a glimpse up in the empty space
And the wise one-eyed great father in the sky stilled my flame

For the ones who stood me near
And you few who were me dear
I ask of thee to have no doubts and no fears

For when the great clouds fills the air
And the thunder roars from o, so far away up in the sky
Then for sure you will know that I have reached the joyous hall up high

With my bloodbrothers at side
All sons of father with one eye
We were all born in the land of the blood on ice

And now you all who might hear my song
Brought to you by the northern wind have no fear
Though the night may seem so everlasting and forever dark

There will come a golden dawn
At ends of nights for all yee on whom
Upon the northstar always shines

The vast gates to hall up high
Shall stand open wide and welcome you with all its within
And Oden shall hail us bearers of a pounding hammerheart

Rhapsody-Magic of the Wizard's Dream

In those silent shades of grey
I will find a place
to escape the endless night
to find a new sun

I know which is my fate
bond to Erian's old tale
I'll be always there
fighting the ancient sin
Moon shine in this eternal night

ANGELS ARE CALLING
FROM DIVINE LOST CRYSTAL REALMS
RIDING FROM HEAVEN
FOR THE MAGIC OF THE WIZARD'S DREAM

In the misty lights of dawn
between heart and soul
Elgard's calling for new hope
to avoid our fall

I know which is my fate
bond to Erian's old tale
I'll be always there
fighting the ancient sin
Moon shine in this eternal night

ANGELS ARE CALLING
FROM DIVINE LOST CRYSTAL REALMS
RIDING FROM HEAVEN
FOR THE MAGIC OF THE WIZARD'S DREAM

Queensryche-Eyes of a Stranger. The political meaning of the whole Mindcrime album makes it one of the best albums in metal history!

All alone now
Except for the memories
Of what we had and what we knew
Everytime I try to leave it behind me
I see something that reminds me of you
Every night the dreams return to haunt me
Your rosary wrapped around your throat
I lie awake and sweat, afraid to fall asleep
I see your face looking back at me

And I raise my head and stare
Into the eyes of a stranger
I've always known that the mirror never lies
People always turn away
From the eyes of a stranger
Afraid to know what
Lies behind the stare

Is this all that's left
Of my life before me
Straight jacket memories, sedative highs
No happy ending like they've always promised
There's got to be something left for me
And I raise my head and stare
Into the eyes of a stranger
I've always known that the mirror never lies
People always turn away
From the eyes of a stranger
Afraid to know what
Lies behind the stare [Lies behind my stare]

How many times must I live this tragedy
How many more lies will they tell me
All I want is the same as everyone
Why am I here, and for how long

And I raise my head and stare
Into the eyes of a stranger
I've always known that the mirror never lies
People always turn away
From the eyes of a stranger
Afraid to know what
Lies behind the stare

I would be able to write for hours but...I know I have to stop unfortunately...

He loved to hear the little kids scream
His instruments of hell did gleam
A box with a cleaver, saw and a knife
He used them to cut up their innocent lives

Mr. Albert Fish, was children your favourite dish?
Mr. Albert Fish, was children your favourite dish?
Mr. Albert Fish, was children your favourite dish?
Mr. Albert Fish, was children your favourite dish?

He took 12-year old Grace Budd home
And then he sawed right through her bones
With carrots and onions he made a stew
Her body parts was also used

Mr. Albert Fish, was children your favourite dish?
Mr. Albert Fish, was children your favourite dish?
Mr. Albert Fish, was children your favourite dish?
Mr. Albert Fish, was children your favourite dish?

With his fist in the air, he'd scream he was Christ
He'd do things to kids that weren't too nice
He'd lure them in and eat them up
Albert Fish, you were such a fucking nut

Mr. Albert Fish, was children your favourite dish?
Mr. Albert Fish, was children your favourite dish?
Mr. Albert Fish, was children your favourite dish?
Mr. Albert Fish, was children your favourite dish?

Someone's actually doing the whole fantasy thing right. A great song about Merlin (at least that's what I presume):

Pagan Altar - The Sorcerer

Darkness like a cloak of saffron velvet surrounds him
Stark trees of stone support the moon and stop the sky from falling in around him.
He stands upon his mountain throne
his arms held high he’s all-alone.
Ashen face turned towards the sky
His eyes reflect a tormented soul
Endless years have took their toll
His mind too troubled to let him die.

Lightning, swift and dazzling as it flashes silhouettes him
A gnarled old man of ageless time his bony fingers draw his cloak around him
He slowly bends his weary frame
Picks up his lamp adjusts its flame
Secrets of the night to unfurl
He walks away with laden tread
Slowly turning his grey old head
Briefly looking back at the world.

Visions of the ages that have passed fly before him
Memories of kings and queens, long since dead their ghostly forms surround him
But soon these figures start to fade
They’re only dreams an old man made
A wish that is borne of despair
There is no one left to take their place
No Arthur now to save our face
No leaders who seem as if they care

Oh where are we going to
What is there left for me and you?
You charge each other for the time and breath it takes to say 'good morning',
But the truth is slowly dawning -- things are getting out of hand,
We all pursue our shattered dreams along the roads to our own ruin --
Watch our empires sink and wash away like castles made of sand.
And so cast off the lies that are your lives and find the truth within.

And another one by Pagan Altar, this time a more 'real' one posing a serious and important question:

Pagan Altar - The Maquerade

Think of the people you meet every day,
Think of the characters they try to portray.
They hide what they’re thinking hide what they feel,
In an age of hypocrisy nothing is real.
Faces are just curtains of stone,
That hides their true feelings ‘till they’re alone.

Who can you say that you really know?
You see only the façade they wish to show.
Is it that they are weak or afraid?
They live out their lives in this masquerade.

They are all clowns behind a painted smile.
They tried to enchant, persuade or beguile.
Faceless with no thoughts or ideals,
Transparent reflections, nothing is real.

They cling to their idols echo their lives,
But it’s only a front, a place they can hide.
Their own minds suppressed from birth to the grave,
Enacting their lives in this masquerade.

I look at myself am I the same,
I try to find out if I play the game.
Which side of my soul does everyone see?
The face that I show is it really me?

There’s no way of knowing if I play a part,
Is my true self left in the dark?
Am I for real, or what I am made?
Or am I just part of this masquerade?

(Oh yes, I did just lose the game.)

Didn't know this topic existed, but Joost like someone says:

This one gives me shivers down my spine

Iced Earth - A Question of Heaven

The time is close now, the end is near
My walk through the valley, trails of fear
I feel empty, my penance overdue, I guess it's too late now
To be with you
I'm extremely frightened of what will surely be
I sold myself, the death of me
I know you can't forgive me
I know I'm on my own, I've betrayed you
I walk alone

What exactly is the meaning of this
Just pawns in your twisted game
Severe pain for the lie I'm livin'
For a love I never could betray

Question me not say the lord unto thee
You have chosen your own fate and your own destiny
Denied of this life is what you are to be
You have chosen your own fate and your own destiny

Lord I pound my fists at you
Won't you just let me die
Would I not suffer enough
No inner peace no after life

I did what I thought was right
All for the love of my life
I know it's sad but true
Something is very wrong
Condemned to suffer so long
For a love so true

The question that lies within
Is so hard to understand
It still tears at me
And in my dying breath
My heart holds no regrets
I wouldn't change a thing

My spirit begins to rise into the heavenly skies
Just to be shunned away by you
Now all I want is to die, no streets of gold in the sky
And I wash my hands of you

Rising to the heavens light
Just to plea for death
Just to be denied
