Is it just me or we're flooded with spambots?

#1 Post by Orodaran » 21 Apr 2011 20:37

There's not a day anymore that I come back home without finding the latest post in the Coffee Shop made by a spambot. Damn them all, isn't there any kind of further security measure to implement?

Isn't that a moderator's job? Or is this the fine line between administrators and moderators? :P

But yeah, it's quite annoying. Maybe it has something to do with my login difficulties...

I don't have access to the control panel, I don't have an option "delete all posts by this user" so I have to track them down one by one, like nazi hunters were doing :twisted:

I did that with 3 bots and over 50 messages one time. THAT was tedious. I'm pretty sure I had better things to do. :)

I don't know why, but of all the forums I've frequented over the then last years, be it ezboard, phpbb yada yada, this forum is the only one I've seen with a spambot infestation. In fact I've never seen a spambot on another board. Only here. Well, there's tons of them on IGN and Rotten Tomatoes, but I don't really count them as proper message board.

This is weird. :?

In a situation like that once I just banned the spambot, and then sent a PM to Joost asking him to delete all his posts at once. :P

Oh, now you tell me. :roll: :wink:
I generally ban any bot I encounter, although it seems futile, considering how many permutations there are of the 4 letter-3 number combination. :/

Btw, in case you didn't already discovered it by yourself: the closest we can come to delete all posts by an user, is when they're doing multiple replies to themselves in a thread; there's the option "Merge posts" where you can see and select all the posts in a topic, and so you can - example - select the 5 posts in a row by a spambot and click on Delete.... faster than doing it one by one :P

Good to know, but I haven't really encountered multiple spam posts in one topic anyway.

If someone comes up with a good way to cut back on spambots without increasing the amount of work I have to do daily then I am all for it. ;-)

The easiest solution would be more moderators. The situation at the mo is quite bad, because there's so many of them right now. I cannot blame the mods for not being able to monitor the forum 24/7, so perhaps one or two extra mouseclickers could help.

Don't wanna be an ass, but it's getting quite out of hand with all the spambots.

I just reported what seemed like 50 spamposts AND i resisted the temptation of reporting a few of Hansi Smurf's posts too. God I deserve a medal for this.

That sounds quite reasonable to me. As far as I understand it, deleting a post doesn't take more time than reporting one, so with a few extra people it should be easier. You wouldn't even have to equip them with all mod privileges or a green name, just the ability to delete stuff. I realise that a certain amount of trust towards this people is required, but it shouldn't be too hard to find one or two who browse this forum regularly, have done so for a few years, and don't engage to aggressive in discussions - or whatever the requirements would be.

top 14 topics in the coffee shop with last answers from spambots, then one real, and the following eleven again replies by spambots, mostly old topics resurrected by them, sometimes spambot topics with replies from other spambots.
And it's sunday. Are users getting tired of posting there, because they're gonna drown in a flood of spam anyway?

Seeing the WOW GOLD bot replying to the naked video bot was quite something.

Oh, and did anyone see the Iced Earth spambot?

The IE-bot posted a BG-topic too. Just tagged it, so I guess you already got it.

The guy quoted below mentions an option which is both as simple as it is brilliant. Might be worth looking into (although it'll be a temporary solution at best... if it helps then it's a matter of time until the spambots find a way around it).
Up until recently I had 30 - 40 spambots a day bombarding my site. I installed captcha (no good), Textual Confirmation (no good) and Administrator only registration which meant I got the emails . However, I realised that the spambots were ignoring the front screen entirely and just submitting a long registration string directly to the main php program. Of course, the filename is available and will receive the info directly!! So, someone, I forget where, came up with a very ingenious one line of code fix. In my list of fields to be passed to the registration program is one for Timezone. The top or first one on the list is GMT-12 which is actually a totally uninhabited region. The other timezones are selected from a drop-down box. It appears that the spambots only select the top entry in a dropdown box so in this case, they will send the Timezone as GMT-12 in the registration string. All you have to do in the main .php registration program is to add a line to check for the Timezone being GMT-12 and if so, exit the process. Since I installed the single line, about 2 months ago, I haven't had a single spambot registration and everyone else can register normally. All Kudos to the person who figured this one out, I forgot where I read it but it does work, for now! :)

brilliant indeed!
Btw, does the board use captcha? It probably won't filter all bots, but certainly more than without.

Actually I don't believe captcha works at all. Modern programs can tackle it easy enough.

A Q&A-verification would work better, especially if it's not easily googled (they do that too). Something like this would do the trick: "What are the first three letters of the first name of BG's singer" or "Write this as a number: fourty-two".

There are plugings for the phpbb that do the latter, so how about it?

Well I don't know enough about spambot programming and captchas, it just seems to me that programming a spambot that registers in fora without any obstacles, create threads and post a given text should be fairly easy to do, while you would have to at least integrate a picture->text interpretation program (etc.) into the code when you want your spambot to be able to get around them, which sounds (though not necessarily is) way more complicated.
But anyway, that's not really what matters here I think ;)

Maybe the mods should stop accepting new members for a couple of weeks... maybe it will stop then?

Well, you are right in a way. Captcha will definetely help against my-first-spambots. Sadly, that's not the remedy we need here. But still, removing captcha would indeed be a bad idea.

Well AFAIK the admins switched from automatic acceptance of new members to manually controlled a while ago, but decided that the extra amount of work wasn't worth it and switched back.
Still, isn't there a way to have these mails sent to volunteer users (or mods, afaik only the admins got the confirmation mail) and have them check it? Granted, a potential user would have to maybe wait a few days in the worst case, but that shouldn't scare them off as it is common practice in other fora, and the ones that really can't wait that long, well, are we (you/the band/the board/the admins) really in need of them?

I still like the Timezone idea that Ferdi posted - it seems both simple and effective, and the webmaster was asking for something easy :P

You should also put a note that says to select the correct timezone, because I'm pretty sure when I first registered the time was set to GMT -12.

Another option would be to add an extra field in the registration form with a question related to Blind Guardian. For example:

Q: When was A Night At The Opera released?
A:____ . (Field for the answer)

The right answer in this case will be "2002", and if that answer is entered then it will continue to proceed with the registration process, if any other answer is entered, then it will not continue until the proper answer is entered.

This could be an useful and simple solution, 'coz bots wouldn't know about this, so they will always be stuck at the registration process and keep failing over and over.

Why should someone registering to a BG board be already fully aware of everything that goes on with the band? maybe he's someone that just discovered the band and wants to learn more about it talking with other fans.

There should be a link to another page if at all, like, example, "click here [external link to the BG homepage] and write the last word of the album title that starts with A Night at the....", but it's tedious. I still support the Timezone check trick..... someone do something asap please!!!!!

Oro, it isn't something that nobody would never know. If I need an answer to a question that I don't know I'll use Google, or Wikipedia, or whatever. It isn't top secret after all.

And yeah, this spam thing is getting annoying :(

Naja...
unfortunately it doesn't last long until long-time measures are taken, like the one proposed in this topic. Webmaster?

About to get rid of all this mess (and I can imagine how much the other mods have to clean up as well) only to do it again tomorrow..... how I hate spambots that make 20 posts in 20 different topics, they should do like some and post 7-8 times in a single thread, they're easier to delete :P

Yeah, I figure... thanks anyway for doing the dirty work, I just reported a bunch of others and sent a pm to the webmaster asking him to have a look at this timezone related user deleting proposal since it seems he doesn't read this topic.

The Rider Of Rohan wrote:The IE-bot posted a BG-topic too.

So, can someone tell me exactly what line would have to be added in which .php file?

Why not ask the phpbb staff for the exact lines? I'm sure they would know, would be happy to help, and you as a webmaster seem to be in the right position to ask.

Nice!

here's some more detailed stuff I found concerning the mod:
Here is a detailed tutorial which could help:
1.) SEND the [includes/usercp_register.php] to anywhere on you computer, by using an FTP Program, Frontpage will do, CoreFTP Lite would do as well.
2.) After you have saved it someone where on your computer, I HIGHLY recommend you do duplicate it and paste the same exact copy somplace else on your computer just in case you mess it up.
3.) Then right click on one of those files you saved and go [OPEN WITH] And Select Notepad, WordPad, etc, but I highly recommend Notepad.
4.) After you selected Notepad, Hit CTRL + F, and when the box shows up, type in ---> SELECT MAX <--- WITHOUT the dashes and arrows LOL and what you're trying to look for should show up which should be:

$sql = “SELECT MAX(user_id) AS total

5.) After you have found it, COPY + PASTE what' s below BEFORE the "$sql = "SELECT MAX(user_id) AS total: COPY WHAT IS UNDER:

Code: Select all

    if (($user_timezone < -5) || ($user_timezone > 5))
    {
       $message = 'Sorry, you appear to have triggered our spam security system.  Please go back and modify some of the information and try again.<br /><br />To give you a hint, we only accept registrations from people based in (or near) the GMT time zone area.<br /><br />';
       message_die(GENERAL_MESSAGE, $message);
    }
6.) Hit the TAB button a few time to make it align with the rest of the text. Look at this following image, just to make sure you got it at the right spot:
If you're stuck, look at this image, it should help:
http://i17.tinypic.com/6cp7mg6.jpg
After you have completed all of those steps, click SAVE NOT NOT NOT SAVE AS!!!!! And After that, send the file back to where it originally was on your site, which would be [includes/usercp_register.php][/size]
Also maybe of interest could be the following guide:
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=427852

After some introduction the first post goes into explaining why certain stuff helps and other stuff doesn't. Also, it links to tutorials for 26 mods (!) that can be included in the php files. I think this is also helpful, since once the timezone based ban will be widely used, bot programmers will just have their bots use other zones. Adding multiple mods will prevent that all the spam will be back once the mod above is popular.

Cheers

I've deleted a number in the last few days, so they seem to be active still. :/
