Introduction section to deal with spambots

#1 Post by No‘am » 19 Apr 2010 09:59

I don't know how much of a hassle and if it's worth it, but you could maybe do an intro section which would be the only place where newly registered users would have any posting rights, and the rest of the forums would be locked for them, and they'll have to post some introduction post proving that they're human before the other forums get unlocked.

It might be a good idea... but how do you approve a new member? Should an admin check the guy's introduction and then approve an account? It might get a bit complicated...

Especially if admins aren't here for a while. I think an email verification would be good

Maybe it would work to reject usernames that contain at least 4 letters in sequential alphabetical order in one row (like nopq or something)...

or you just unfix the email-send-function which sends the activation mails. in this case people have to asked a mod if they can join the forum and proof with this, that they are no spambots. problem solved 8)

Companies make spambots to post adds on web sites, right? Can they do anything else? Like mess with the posts or something?

Once we had a "General" section, named like that, because it was the section the spambots were looking for, evidently assuming that a forum labeled "General" would be the main one and with more people visiting...

To this day, that was the most effective and successful remedy we had against spambots :P

For their current invasion, never ever replying to any of their messages help, and so the report function - for example when I enter a forum I immediately notice the report tags, so I go to delete all the posts of the spambots... I do my best to hunt them down and kill them one by one, but it's so annoying to not have a "delete all posts by this user" function, I have to delete them one by one

We updated to a new version of phpBB. Let's hope this will keep the spambots at bay for the time being.

Other than this, the number of spambots now is much much smaller than it was during the phpBB 2 days, when forums were literally flooded by them. Personally I don't think it's the right moment yet for such drastic measures.

Maybe it's time for a new mod or admin though, as I will be quite busy from August onward, and I think the other mods/admins (Andrea and Drew) are quite busy as well...
