Welcome to the other side!

#1 Post by Joost » 22 Jun 2009 12:22

So, as you can all see, the forum is back online, this time with phpBB 3 software.

Besides the change to new software (including fun ones, such as the feature to add your birthday to your forum profile!), the following things have changed:

- Avatars are enabled. The same goes for 19 MB inline panorama photos, err, I mean: images, in posts.
- There are no forum-specific moderators anymore, just a global moderation team of Drew and me as admins, and Andrea as global moderator.
- Unfortunately Jason has been a bit overeager with pruning the forum, and pruned all topics that have had no reply in the last three months. I wasn't very happy with this either, I even asked Jason if it was possible to undo this, but unfortunately, it was not. So, let's just regard this as a good occasion for a new start.
- I deleted a large number of inactive/old forum accounts.
- Hopefully all the problems with registrations of new accounts, and with e-mail notifications of private messages, are resolved.

I disabled the [ flash ]-tag, though, because at one point I kind of realized that that tag would allow for quite annoying stuff (e.g. to embed flash applets with sound that will be heard right away).
You charge each other for the time and breath it takes to say 'good morning',
But the truth is slowly dawning -- things are getting out of hand,
We all pursue our shattered dreams along the roads to our own ruin --
Watch our empires sink and wash away like castles made of sand.
And so cast off the lies that are your lives and find the truth within.

The font type is a bit annoying, but other than that everything looks good. :)

If I told you, that I find it harder to read, would that mean that something is wrong with my perceptions?

the only thing I really have to complain about is: it seems like the "you know you're a bard, when" topic as well as the Bardism Bible topic and the picture thread with all the "artworks" have been killed -.- that's not nice.

I know – it sucks – and the pruning shouldn't have happened. (And actually, part of my proposal of what to do with the forum was not to have prunings like this.) After I found out that this pruning happened, I tried to convince Jason to find a way to restore the old posts, but he said he was unable to do so, and there were no back-ups of the forum either. Sad but true. :(

BTW: Three new users (real users, not spambots) already since the new forum went online!

33 posts! Has it been that long since I actually posted somewhat regularely… I think I lost some, 300-ish posts. That's 90%. Oh, well. I was never in the top anything anyway. I'm glad we have the avatars though. Now I can amaze people with my handsome looks, so they don't notice the rubbish I write.

Joost...seriously...why won't my little "online/offline" box ever say I'm online? I'm becoming obsessed with this. And not in a good way, either. I want to be online, dammit. I need validation.

Also, I can't believe people are still thinking about post counts here. What a bunch of whiny little brats. Typing nothing 100,000 times a day does not make you the winner of anything. Just ask Kankra.

I don't know... but right here, right now, it says that you are online!

And maybe it tends to say 'offline' when you set yourself to browsing the forums invisibly?

I don't have myself set to invisibility...anymore.

But it says I'm online now? Not to me, it doesn't. Jeesh. Maybe I can't see my own online status? Can you see yours? Or dead people?

This is a fascinating line of discussion. Heh.

I remember I was always sad that this forum didn't show the post count next to one's name. So back in the day when I was like the 10th highest poster, many people didn't even know. Now that post counts are visible, mine has been axed.

I am sad again.

Anyway, haven't been here for a while, but the new forum looks fine, its appearance not that different from the old one. With more options and such it's a welcome change from what I've seen so far. Too bad about the pruning, although I see that I'm close to Orodaran's post count :)

Before my very (old and feeble) eyes, I have changed from offline to online. Thanks for sorting this out for me, Joost. You're a peach. I don't care what the neighbors say.

Now that I'm online, I'm going to leave the forum for good. Never to return, mind you. Never ever ever.

They're not spambots, but web crawlers. The software knows that they are bots, because in the place where, in HTTP messages, usually browser information is sent, the crawlers send out information on what they are crawling for (e.g. Google).

That's actually pretty clever. Who trained those dogs?
(I quoted the post I understood, sorry Joost, I'm not good at computer stuff, but your explanation is good enough for me :))

Now that's clever. The forum now warns you when someoneposted while you where writing your post. Never seen that before. Two thumbs up for it!

And when you click "go to page" (in a thread with several pages) you can write which page you want. You'll find lots of new features as you explore this new board :)
You can't change your username yourself, though, like on the old board. Guess we'll have to send a pm to Joost if we want a new username. Related to that, know what could be an idea? Taglines, that the admins decide. Taglines being a line under the username (and avatar, for those having one). The admins can create quite some mischief with taglines on the administration control panel, possibly making some users beg the admins to remove them :P

I've seen a forum where the newest member have a tagline that says "1st week Newbie," and after that "^ha, look at the n00b." Perhaps something like that. :P

Yeah, unless the taglines are from the post count, that's boring. So, if the admins care to find a unique tagline of their choice for anyone they think deserve one.
Explore Red Cafe and you'll find many good ones. You probably have to know the place in order to understand many of them, though...

on the Elvenking-Forum, we could pm the admin so he'd give us the taglines we wanted.

That's a possibility as well, of course. I used to be at a forum with something like that, there was a topic where you could suggest taglines. However, after having read a bit at Red Cafe (where the admins decide the taglines), I think that's better.
