Augustiner Edelstoff.
Not sure how widely this is available outside of eastern Bavaria, but it's really tasty stuff. Look here: http://www.augustiner-braeu.de/augustin ... iment.html It's the second from the left, top row.

I also like Hertog Jan, a dutch beer and I fondly remember some belgian beers that Joost had me taste at some festival.

Id love to go to a brew masters festival in the states!! Man that would be cool! Apparently they have one every year in Texas and I just missed it! Id love to come to Europe and drink all the tasty beers!! I have a passport and my parents lived in Zurich for awhile but I wasn't able to come over before they came back to the states.

Mostly local beers that nobody will have heard of:
- Spalter Export Hell and Spalter Permium Lager (from a small dump in Germany)
- Appenzeller Quöllfrisch (aSwiss beer)
- Stiegl Paracelsus Zwickl (unfiltered Austrian beer [not really a local one])
Apart from that, I recently discovered a nice pub in Vienna where they have a beer card that's larger than most menu cards in restaurants, I thought about trying all of them and rate them by stars, so when I'm through, I'll post again ;)

Probably Murphy's. I generally prefer ales over lagers, although I recently discovered a German lager called Spaten, which is not only very nice but also surprisingly cheap for an imported beer and comes in large bottles. One imported beer that is very common here is Leffe, which I tried a couple of times and still am not sure whether I like it or not.

How could I miss this topic?

Generally, the darker the beer, the more the flavor opens up as it warms a bit.

Some of my favorites are:
Shiner Bock is my go-to beer. Wondfully smooth and pretty much goes with any food.
Killian's is my budweiser. You can basically find it anywhere and it's pretty much a red Shiner Bock.
Siberian Night is my favorite stout. A great winter beer - warms you up and weighs you down. I highly recomend it if you can track it down.
- http://thirstydog.com/Merchant2/merchan ... Code=_home
Arrogant Bastard - This brew is super hoppy and kind of has a citrus peel after taste going on.
Three Philosophers - Really tasty stuff. I highly recommend it.

Lagers - lots of Czech ones (or anything similar and about 5%), or Hertog Jan, Rothaus
Belgian ales - Delirium, Grimbergen
English bitters - Blue Monkey

beer..

I tend to go to pubs with over 100 beers in their selections.

I once made this very long post about different kinds of beers, and I guess I have favorites in every style.

Lager: No longer brewn in Holland, generally an alcohol percentage of 3-4.5%
Pilsner: A stronger version of Lager with about 5% alcohol, flavour-wise both are similar, though the Dutch would consider the "Lager" with it's lower alcohol percentage almost "festival beer" (which generally has about 2% alcohol). Pilsner originates in the Czech town of Pilsen (where the Pilsner Urquell is still brewn), the Czech Republic and Germany are well known for their Lagers and Pilsners, though I prefer the Dutch Hertog Jan and Grolsch. Most disgusting among the Pilsners in my opinion have been Heineken, Rothaus (germany, schwarzwald), Oranjeboom (holland) and Maes (belgium).
Though in general this is not my favorite kind of beer.

Within the catagory of Ales I prefer the Belgian ales Palm and De Koninck, both are nice and soft, with a slight sweet to it. Most ales have an alcohol percentage of about 5%, just like with pilsners, only the Ales are more amber coloured.

Blonde beer, a beer with an alcohol percentage between 5 and 6% and a golden yellow colour, though opposed to the pilsners a softer and slightly more bitter taste. Also often the yeasting process is concluded after putting the beer in a bottle which may lead to a more murky beer opposed to the very clear pilsners. I find this beer refreshing to drink on a terrace in the summer, Leffe Blond being a nice one, but certainly not the best. I prefer the blond beers from several Trappist brewers (i'll come back to those later), La Trappe having a refreshing clear beer with a slight apple flavour to it, Westmalle being among the better ones as well. I also really like the dutch Cristoffel Blond, which is a murky, near white-yellow beer with a fairly bitter taste. Nice and refreshing!

Heavy Blonde Beer, same style of the blonde beers, though slightly heavier in flavour and alcohol (7.5-8.5%). Among my favorites being Duvel and Deugniet, other nice ones are Brigand and Piraat. Though often unfiltered, like the Blonde beers, recently the filtered version is up and coming, which I personally dislike. The leftover yeast gives for a nice bitter in the murky beer.

More to follow at a later time...

Stay tuned!

I think Rothaus Tannenzöpfle is a good Pilsener, as is Hertog Jan, but most of the big brand name pilseners taste like bitter piss.

Also agree about König Ludwig Dunkel. Dark beers in general tend to be very rich and full.

I really like the Augustiner Hell - different beer from the same brewery as the on ementioned by t.a.j. - but it's the one in the top left, or Franziskaner, when it comes to wheat beer.

But my all time fav is Berchtesgadener Jubiläumsbier, from the small brewery in my hometown.

I once brewed a horrendous beverage, using a home-brew kit and some strawberry teabags. There may have been some other stuff in it, but what, I can't remember. It tasted fantastic and was a gorgeous ruby colour. Only problem was, you got the hangover first, and woke up drunk....I got a fair bit of hate mail off my mates for that. Which offended me. I mean, did I force them to drink it??
I offered some to a hardened drinker and even he refused

If I'm out drinking, I like to try the local guest ales, so anything from blondes to chocolate stouts, although I prefer the blondes. The Wychwood Brewery has some lovely beers, and you can get cool merchandise too :)

Generally, no. Pilsner and lager style beers should definitely be drunk cold (around 5°C, that is -- there are some beers that are served at 'ice cold' temperature -- freezing point, that is -- but that to me seems to be more of a gimmick than anything else). The English drink their ales at a higher temperature, but it should definitely still be below room temperature (around 12-15°C sounds fine for an English ale, I guess), but a stout, such as Guinness, should be drunk cold again; as for speciality beers from Belgium and elsewhere, it varies a lot. Generally though, the following rule of thumb seems to hold true: the stronger and tastier the beer, the higher the serving temperature should be. For most of the beers I named in my previous post, I guess a serving temperature of 10-15°C would be just fine.

Ah, a topic for me :)
Gandalf de Grijze wrote:beer..

Me too (well, more often when I still lived in Finland), and I used to work in one of these.

In general I like darker beers more than normal ones. Don't really drink Pils anymore. And for some reason I really don't like the Belgian beers either. I found out Augustiner Dunkel is better than the Edelstoff, but have to agree, that one is really good :)

My favorites that are always available in local bars are mostly Czech beers recently like dark Krusovice and dark Staropramen, can always drink them. At least better than Beck's.

However, I tasted a couple of Scottish and English Ales and I think that's more my style. As long as they're not too strong and quite malty I might like them (which is quite the opposite from the regular northern German beer drinker). Sometimes also Stouts, but Guinness has become rather boring :)

Some of my favorites anyway:
Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout
Left Hand Milk Stout (or as I call it: the cow-beer, because of the label)
Traquair House Ale
Strong Suffolk Vintage Ale
Scottish Ale and St. Andrews Ale from Belhaven
St Peters Cream Stout
and every now and then some Brown Ales (mostly they only have Newcastle)

I think the Goldbräu is quite nice too. Nothing special or anything, but a good bear nevertheless. Then again, I seem to like more of the "popular" beers in Austria than in Switzerland, where the only good one you can get in a standard supermarket would be a Hürlimann.
However, I found that also the most disgusting beer is from Austria, the Schwechater beer. A "friend" gave me four of them as a gift. Turns out he himself he was given five of them from another friend who bought a sixpack, opened one, found it too disgusting, gave the remaining five away, and my friend did the same thing. After half a can I had to pour it out and gave the remaining three to a random drunk in the streets on my way home. A really disgusting beer.

That's blasphemy, mate!

There are many beers which I like such as:
Orval
Duvel
Palm
Jupiler
Tuborg
Carlsberg
...
The list is too long to publish here. My country has too much good beers to name here.
But there's no excuse for a Belgian to like Tuborg or Carlsberg...
I know that they aren't Belgian, but I do like them. :) I'm not saying they're my favourites but they taste alright from time to time.

It's not just that they are not Belgian (many great beers are made outside Belgium, in fact), but it's rather the fact that they... suck. :P

And wasn't this supposed to be a list of your favourite beers? (See topic title)

Ah well, I do like them. And I know that there are many good beers aside from the Beglian ones.
And they do belong in my list, as I drink them more often than other beers.

Not sure how widely this is available outside of eastern Bavaria, but it's really tasty stuff.
It is available and it sure is tasty, had some of them last night. Thx for the hint :)

I'm not a master of beer knowledge. I like to drink it though. Anyone up for some Franziskaner Weissbier? :)

Franziskaner is the best Weißbier there is.

I'm especially partial to Paulaner wiessbier (wheat beer); I also enjoy Spaten, especially the Optimator and weissbier, and Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout.

Maybe not the best one (I prefer the Kuchlbauer Turm Weisse), but certainly better than most other Weissbeers (e.g. Schneiders Scheisse)

I like Weihenstephaner Weissbier a lot!

That's a good one, although I think I prefer the Imperial Stout of Samuel Smith's.
