European PIGS.

#1 Post by Skyclad » 04 Mar 2010 16:30

Okay, what's the deal, Europe? Just saw that the Euro is on the fast track to be worth less than the U.S. dollar due that National debts of some countries, mostly Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain (Hence the term "PIGS"). Bad for you guys, ood for me being able t get import CD's from u.S. distros cheaper. :P

Well, yeah, that's just how the economy works. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I wouldn't be surprised if the tide would turn again, a few years from now.
You charge each other for the time and breath it takes to say 'good morning',
But the truth is slowly dawning -- things are getting out of hand,
We all pursue our shattered dreams along the roads to our own ruin --
Watch our empires sink and wash away like castles made of sand.
And so cast off the lies that are your lives and find the truth within.

There once was a time that a dollar was worth more than a euro, so as Joost already said, it's not that spectacular

well.. .as it seems greece is fucked, and our government has just increased taxes, and they are cutting the 14th salary from public servants and soon to the private sector too... I don't get how giving more money to the bosses they will save greece!
(In greece we have 14 salaries per year, and that's why we have so small salaries). The members and the public servants of the parliament have 16 salaries per year and they won't get any reductions to their salary! That's totally unfair!
And now, Gas is now too expensive due to additional tax.
Things are going from bad to worse!

Hole that knife in they're face, and maybe you can get a tax reduction. Maybe. This hasn't been proved.

I don't think the euro will fall below the USD. But I hope it won't be too strong when my country finally comes around to adopt it.

1.5 USD for 1 euro was a bit extreme.

The U.S. dollar will be worth nothing soon. But that's okay 'cause we're just gonna keep printing more of them little buggers. You see the grand design here, huh? Presiding over the demise of America, one stimulus package at time.

See, but I'm thinking ahead. I'm converting all my hard-earned, capitalistic dollars into solid assets that won't devalue. Like frozen pizzas and flashlights.

You'll be okay, man. Obama opened up offshore drilling for oil the other day. That shit's gotta be refined, so you should be getting some overtime soon. In a decade or so.

Well what he "opened" was a joke. Don't forget that when he came into office he disallowed ALL drilling and now he has "opened" some, but still less than was previously allowed. And the spots that he did open aren't the ones that would produce the most yield. It is all really a stunt to try to convince critics that he is doing something correct for a change. But if you keep up with the facts you will see that he is still a dunce!

I don't know why he bothered. Environmentalists will be angry, and the Republicans that don't support him now aren't going to support him because of this. Frankly, I'm disappointed that he gave the concession. Destroying some more habitat for a trivial amount of oil a few years down the road doesn't sound like a good trade-off.

The left wing have been trying to get it through Obama's head that he should just stop trying to work with the right... they aren't going to like him either way, so he might as well quit trying and work on what he wants to do instead of trying to be bi-partisan.

I wish the right would just honestly TRY to work with him. And I don't mean offering alternatives that they know won't be accepted. That's not trying to help, that' just playing politics. At the end of the day, they wouldn't even vote for the bill that they proposed if they thought they could hurt Obama politically. Nothing in Congress is about what is good for the country. It's all about power games. The two coinciding sometimes is only a happy coincidence. And I'm absolutely sick of it.

After the health care vote, John McCain was so butt-hurt that actually wneton TV and said the president can expect no more cooperation from the Republicans for the rest of the year. That is an idiotic statement in so many ways.

You mean those oil-sand fields in Alaska, that lie in as-of-yet-untouched wildlife preservations? And oil-sand, incidentally being the most messy and harmful oil-reserves ever to be found? But I forgot, driving fuel-swigging cars is a human right. And since we're humans we're standing over all other life, and are completely independent from it. Thus once we've polluted the air and cannot breathe anymore, we can simply stuff the money we made, errr.. the others made by destroying our livelihood, up our noses and can survive.

How about we put that money that we invest to squeeze out even the last bit of oil, to good use and invest into the development of new energy forms? That, would be certainly unwise. Investing into the future. Hah! I live now, and I don't fucking care what happens when I'm gone. Because I am, and I am most important.

What happens with flawed lifeforms? They become extinct? Oh wait, no, I'm wrong. God will smile upon us and safe us, because we just destroyed his creation, in the name of god and good faith.

You see, the media can sell you misinformation very well. When the media covers Greece, they say they live all off the state and have 14 salaries. Yet they fail to mention that their salaries are smaller than is common, because they have 14 salaries. The common person watching that will think: hah! those lazy bastards! 14 salaries? Serves them right!

Let's spinn it into the future: because our economy was bad we need to help it, and we need to give up our 13th salary. People who have already lost it will cheer, as is the nature of humankind: envy is and will always be a part of us. Yet we do not want to recognise it as envy, because, a good human isn't envious, and thus we delude ourselves into not being envious, when, in fact, we very much are.

And so we deprive us of our collective benefits and hand them to other people, who already have more than us, just so that that other, seemingly richer git, has less, and is brought down to our level, which is, since we are on it, the right level: as it should be.

Human perception is so easily deceived. Don't we all like that story about that golden ring, that whispers to every person and makes them act against each other, setting ablaze desire and lust for power and wealth?

You know, about that "just printing banknotes". It's not the government doing that. If the government prints more money, it's just a reaction.

In the past, our money was based on the worth of gold, which was, in fact, present in the vaults of our banks. Now it is not coupled to gold. The worth of our money is determined by the worth of our economy. Now lets look at "how much worth" a company is. Assets are there, but they become mor and more a smaller part of the "worth". The worth is greatly determined by the perception of the people of that certain brand (or, accumulation of brands). So, when the people feel good they perceive our economy well, and thus the economy is worth much. Yet if our "believe" in it is wavering the worth of the economy is crushed, and is crushed further, just as the inverted upwards-trend was carried by itself. The belief that everything can only become better.

Now since the economy is worth more it needs more money, and thus more money is produced to reflect that increase in worth.

It always reminds me of 1984, the scene where O'Brian tells Winston that he could fly. And that he indeed can fly, because, if all the people of Oceania believe he can fly, then he does fly, and eveyone will perceive him as flying.

Combine that with "Jenga" and you have our economy: A Jenga tower, of which we always take the lowest wooden bar and put it back on top of the tower. Always rising, only carried up by our common thought and believe in the economy. And because of this, you could say that what the Americans print on their money is true: in god we trust. If you take out the word god and replace it with money ;)

Ah yes, the raging lunatic, who possibly has no idea whatsoever about economy, did it agin
