Rating all that is beyond the red mirror

#1 Post by Gandalf de Grijze » 29 Jan 2015 21:14

Ok, so let's create an actual rating now that the album has been released!
I suggest giving all the songs a vote 1-10/10 where a 10/10 means it is a masterpiece and 1/10 means it is the shittiest crap ever... (so business as usual)

I'll try to keep the averages updated in this first post as well as posts in between. Note that I won't actually be updating after every single one vote that has been cast, but I do try to keep it at about 3-5 votes intervals.

Current standing:
The Ninth Wave 8.2/10
Twilight Of The Gods 7.0/10
Prophecies 8.6/10
At The Edge Of Time 8.5/10
Ashes Of Eternity 7.2/10
Distant Memories 8.6/10
The Holy Grail 8.8/10
The Throne 9.1/10
Sacred Mind 8.5/10
Miracle Machine 8.0/10
Grand Parade 8.6/10
Doom 7.8/10

green: top three
red: bottom three

My votes:
The Ninth Wave 8.9/10
Twilight Of The Gods 6.0/10
Prophecies 7.6/10
At The Edge Of Time 10/10
Ashes Of Eternity 6/10
Distant Memories 10/10
The Holy Grail 9.2/10
The Throne 10/10
Sacred Mind 8/10
Miracle Machine 7.4/10
Grand Parade 9.5/10
Doom 6.5/10

Votes are to be intended for BG standards

The Ninth Wave 5/10
Twilight Of The Gods 6/10
Prophecies 8/10
At The Edge Of Time 5/10
Ashes Of Eternity 2/10
Distant Memories 9/10
The Holy Grail 8/10
The Throne 10/10
Sacred Mind 9/10
Miracle Machine 8/10
Grand Parade 4/10
Doom will update hopefully soon

The more I listen to it the more it falls down in my BG album chart.
It fell on the bottom, worse than ATITM.
The point is that this could have really been a masterpiece but to me it seems that the guys couldn't help to make bad decisions to botch the highest number of tracks they could.

Probably their best album for me!!! As someone said before...it's like watching an epic movie!!! The difference is that this album is better even than a movie!!! But probably this kind of music is just not for everyone...you probably need very refined kind of taste to appreciate such a "bliss and beauty" as this album is...!!! I just love it! Song like ATEOT is enough to blow away everything...

I'd like to make your task easier. If everybody will use this google form that I have just created, then the result will be calculated and updated automatically.
Here you will see the results.
You need to log in to a google account of course, but I think this way is much more convenient. You can also edit your previous votes.
Just keep in mind, this world is sacred.

You have four songs highlighted in red, instead of three.
Nobody will ever let you know
When you ask the reasons why,
They just tell you that you're on your own,
Fill your head all full of lies

Current standing:
The Ninth Wave 8.1/10
Twilight Of The Gods 6.9/10
Prophecies 8.2/10
At The Edge Of Time 8.2/10
Ashes Of Eternity 6.4/10

The Throne 9.7/10
Sacred Mind 8.9/10
Miracle Machine 8.1/10
Grand Parade 8.8/10
Doom 7.5/10

It seems I am for now the only one with the earbook and Doom... Which is a song that I think especially old school fans will like...
Everyone seems to agree on The Throne bing the best at this point

Total average at this point is an 8,2 for the entire album. Not bad bards!

Well, I don't :P (the Throne)

The Ninth Wave : 8/10
Twilight of the Gods : 7.5/10
Prophecies : 9.5/10
At the Edge of Time : 10/10
Ashes of Eternity : 8/10
Distant Memories : 7.5/10
The Holy Grail : 9.5/10
The Throne : 7.5/10
Sacred Mind : 8.5/10
Miracle Machine : 8/10
Grand Parade : 9/10
Doom ?/10 (reserved for future addition)

Not a single weak song here. 8/11 songs higher than 8 (great). I am almost finished with listening their entire discography back to back and predict this one ends at the top half of their discography for me (my lower half being IFTOS, ANATO, ATITM, BOF and FTB in that order). Each song is distinct and the album is very well balanced. The album is very energetic, melodic and at times heavy as a whole, which I like. Every performance is really great except for the drums, which are just solid for the most part (and maybe the bass, but I cannot say). This is not detrimental to the music for me personally, however, as there are plenty of other attention grabbers.

I don't consider "The throne" the best.
"Prophecies" wins for me...for now.

Hmm, I dunno, Bright Eyes and Nightfall are 10/10 to me. You figure it out, but their latest ballads don't touch me very much. The last top ballad the released for me was Harvest of Sorrow.

Well, Nightfall and especially Bright Eyes have more of a "bite" to them. Bright eyes features some pretty brutal Hansi vocals and Nightfall has some all out epic parts with a bombastic chorus.

You are kinda right, it's harder to please me with a ballad. I guess this is why I listen to metal :O :P. But yeah, Harvest of Sorrow, A Past and Future Secret, The Bard's Song are all top ballads. The rest are just ok.

My rating..
overall this seems to be the worst album for me..

To describe the my scores:
0: complete rubbish
4: can hear it as background without disturbing me
5: Thats okay.. would make it into a random playlist
8: Quite Good, nothing special, but accepted for a "BG songs to hear" playlist
9: makes it into my favorite playlist
10: excellent masterpiece like Valhalla, Banish, When time stands still...

The Ninth Wave 5/10
Twilight Of The Gods 4/10
Prophecies 8/10
At The Edge Of Time 8/10
Ashes Of Eternity 6/10
Distant Memories 8/10
The Holy Grail 9.5/10
The Throne 9/10
Sacred Mind 5/10
Miracle Machine 5/10
Grand Parade 6/10

Overall Album scores: 6.4

Here we go. Preliminary votes, as I still have to elaborate on all the songs, they are all very complex and nuanced.
Despite single votes, I rate the album as a whole a 10/10. The songs should be really listened one after the other.
In other words: the bards continue to amaze me.

The Ninth Wave 9/10
Twilight Of The Gods 7/10
Prophecies 8/10
At The Edge Of Time 7.5/10
Ashes Of Eternity 7.5/10
Distant Memories 10/10
The Holy Grail 7/10
The Throne 8/10
Sacred Mind 6/10
Miracle Machine 9/10
Grand Parade 7.5/10
Doom (haven't heard it yet)

Note: votes may seem low, but they are meant for BG standards. Compared to "normal" songs, all BTRM ones rate 8+ :-)

I added the nickname field to the form and results chart on the second sheet in addition to the charts that you see if choose "See previous responses" after vote.
If you post in this topic you can also discuss and comment, but charts visualization is better than textual information, and as I said you can edit your votes and the results will always be up to date.

Current standing:
The Ninth Wave 7.9/10
Twilight Of The Gods 6.8/10
Prophecies 8.3/10
At The Edge Of Time 8.2/10
Ashes Of Eternity 6.6/10
Distant Memories 8.7/10

The Throne 9.3/10
Sacred Mind 8.3/10
Miracle Machine 7.9/10
Grand Parade 8.5/10
Doom 7.5/10

Good to have people who are less satisfied chime in as well, makes the ranking a better refllection of what we the fans feel. General consensus however is still very positive (I'm glad to see)

Ah, let's just give it a try after 4 listens in total. That's probably not enough to give a proper review, but first impressions count as well I guess. Maybe we should do something like this again in one or two months. I'm dead sure some ratings would change. Mine probably will - I have the strong impression this album just needs a couple of spins to unfold it's beauty in all the details and larger structures that can't be remembered after a few listens.

All grades considering it's Blind Guardian - I really really enjoy this album, I'm just not sure yet, how much compared to the other albums.

The Ninth Wave: 8 / 10
Some great ideas and that partially dark, modern style suits the band better than I thought. That weird, dark, distorted prechorus moving on to the chorus via break with Hansi is a super catchy idea and the solo section is one of the best "distortion guitar orchestras" I've heard in a while. It's excellent even for Andrés standards (it might even beat the Wait for an answer-solo which is a masterpiece and their best yet).
Still "only" 8/10 as I've got the impression that the choir could have been used more effectively / blending better with the rest of the song and some parts / transitions seem a bit random.

Twilight of the Gods: 7,5 / 10
I don't get the quite low ratings - it's a rock solid song with a great chorus, some nice drum parts (intro and outro) and cool guitarwork (those staccato-leads in the verses aren't something new but sound damn good). Not one of Blind Guardians best but far from one of their worst.

Prophecies: 6,5 / 10
Don't stick with me yet despite some real highlight moments like the first half of the chorus with the Control the Divine-riff (I am the center of creation!) and the "Will we ever see the light again"-outro. Might deserve a higher rating, but again there are some parts and vocal lines that don't seem to flow nicely.

At the Edge of Time: 7,5 / 10
I'd really love to give it a higher rating but my first impression is "that band-orchestra-symbiosis is friggin' amazing, but people - give that song time to breathe". There are these various cool orchestral breaks (in the verse, after the choruses), the epic choral/orchestral moments, duels between Hansi and the choir - but it seems a bit loosely glued together. But this might grow immensely after more listens.

Ashes of Eternity: 4 / 10
I don't want to be the next to bash the song but it just doesn't work for me as well. The intro riff is fast and hard-hitting, but then there's that pointless tremolo-wankery that turns up in the main solo again and I hardly remember anything from the rest of the song. Still 4 / 10 because I know there are some parts I thoroughly enjoy while listening - but they don't save that overall sub-par song.

Distant Memories: 8 / 10
Love it! Heard it only once but as others pointed out it's the necessary resting point of the album - the intro is highly melodious and there's a ton of beautiful melodies woven in. Almost kitschy at times, but worth listening to.

The Holy Grail: 9 / 10
Yeehaw! Anybody who knows me better knows that I'm not too fond of the older, speedier albums. But here the uncompromising speed of the older days, the choirs (woo-oo-o-oo-oow) that seem to have just arrived freshly from TFTTW and the singalong-chorus just work perfectly for me. Maybe part of the grade is not the song's quality itself but also how much it stands out on that "Night at the Opera".

The Throne: 10,5 / 10
Maybe it's the euphoria but that could be their best song ever. Everything here is pretty close to perfection - there's some distinguishable, heavy riffs, smoothely flowing transitions between lead-parts, riff-oriented parts and slower storytelling-parts, a proper, super-epic prechorus that builds momentum for that unimaginable chorus that brings it all together - slow and heavy riffing and drumwork on the bottom, the wonderfully pompous and epic choirs (including Hansi in top shape) in the middle and effective orchestration on the top. This is what I would call a masterpiece. This one sets standards how Metal with an orchestra can and must sound.

Sacred Mind: 7 / 10
Doesn't get me as excited many others here - the chorus is great in it's spooky and dark sound and the solo-section has some cool and new (for Blind Guardian) ideas, but the rest of the song doesn't stick with me yet. Still 7/10 - because I already know that I enjoy it.

Miracle Machine: 9 / 10
A gem! Rate it higher, guys and gals! Quiet and low key, but Hansi really emotional (it's amazing hearing him actually -sing- really well and not scream, no matter how much I love his Metal voice) and that lovely hopeful chorus that already sets the positive undertone for the next one.

Grand Parade: 9 / 10
Too much to digest in four listens, amazing yet. I love how it brings that dark journey to a lighter and upbeat end, it works best having the lyrics at hand. That circle of life-y sense of accepting your fate, interrupted by moments of doubt (no more myths, no more bliss) - and another wonderful conclusion: The choirs chanting "No more lies" in the outro and suddenly there's the last line "One more lie". Perfect. "Only" 9/10 because there are again some parts that don't seem to flow nicely - but in the light of the overall impression this is just a minor quibble.

Doom: 7 / 10
The intro made me think "Holy crap, why didn't they do something like this before?" and considering to draw another 9 - but then the song turns out to be a not overly exciting midtempo piece. If they'd only stuck to the dark and menacing tone of the intro - the chorus just doesn't speak "doom".
"Edis Rehto Eht Morf Snoitanigami!"

I don't really give 10's in ratings. I enjoy each song for their own reasons, this is difficult.

The Ninth Wave 7/10 - Epic intro, amazing solo. Unlike most, I actually like the Chorus a lot. It's a little too slow for too long. I'm not sure it needed to be 9:30 long.
Twilight Of The Gods 7.5/10 - I love the vocal lines in this song. Very sing-along worthy to me.
Prophecies 8.5/10 - Strong ties to ATEOT, an album I enjoyed very much..
At The Edge Of Time 9.5/10 - "Who'll Grant me wings to fly? Will I have another try?" "I would not miss this moment again" So many feels throughout this song.
Ashes Of Eternity 8/10 - The intro kicks so much ass, probably the best Metal riff on the album. It seems more old school than the Holy Grail
Distant Memories 9/10 - Great song, memorable and meaningful.
The Holy Grail 8/10 - Great Modern Blind Guardian.
The Throne 8.5/10 - "And then there was silence" long lost cousin? Not as good, mind you, but awesome. Very Dynamic
Sacred Mind 9/10 - Awesome intro, beautiful...then evil. I cannot get enough of the chorus.
Miracle Machine 9.5/10 - When the chorus came in, I came. Hansi's voice is just so damn good. I can't explain it. I can never complain about his vocal melodies and deliverance.
Grand Parade 9/10 - It took a few listens, but I really like this song. Grand of course. But comparing it directly to the last albums closer "wheel of Time" I think it falls short.
Doom - haven't heard

From what I've gathered of the overall album story (without having the earbook yet) I think it's pretty amazing and makes every song crucial.
I admit I didn't really expect much of the story...after the massive disappointment in Iced Earth's Something Wicked Tale...

The Ninth Wave - 6/10. Love the intro and most of the song. Chorus is awful.
Twilight of the Gods - 5/10. Okay song but kind of bland.
Prophecies - 8/10. Pretty good song and I like the chorus.
At the Edge of Time - 9/10. Great song, sweeping orchestra and powerful chorus.
Ashes of Eternity - 4/10. Meh.
Distant Memories - 10/10. Chorus was so emotional. Possibly my favorite BG song of all time.
The Holy Grail - 6/10. I found this just okay.
The Throne - 8.5/10. Good song and I really like the chorus, especially the "we are liars" part.
Sacred Mind - 8/10. Good song but not spectacular.
Miracle Machine - 7/10. Good song for what it is but I'm not too fond of that kind of song.
Grand Parade - 9/10. Chorus is way too cheerful and happy but has some great bits too.
Doom - didn't listen yet

Current standing:
The Ninth Wave 7.9/10
Twilight Of The Gods 6.9/10
Prophecies 8.4/10
At The Edge Of Time 8.5/10
Ashes Of Eternity 6.6/10
Distant Memories 8.7/10
The Holy Grail 8.5/10
The Throne 9.3/10
Sacred Mind 8.4/10
Miracle Machine 8.0/10
Grand Parade 8.7/10
Doom 7.3/10

Finally someone who got the earbook as well and listened to Doom.
The Throne seems to definately be the fan favorite, and ashes of eternity is taking more distance from twilight of the gods in the negative sense

I have also slightly updated my own votes to better reflect the differences between songs that are close in my standing.

It seems that Grand Parade and The Holy Grail traded spots again, interesting to see these go up and down...
Still it seems most people are happy with the record, as it averages at an 8.2

I think that in the end Doom is going to be out of the bottom 3 as people will start to know the song, and I still can't make my mind how the bonus tracks really change the quality of the record making it much better.

Last 30 seconds are too non-melodic, should be cut off.

I mean the song is pretty awesome. It's just the instrumental outro is kind of... non-blindguardian )

I think you are right, was my expectation to begin with, for me however, it will drop... It is a solid song, but it doesn't really feel like it belongs between the rest of the songs... (or at the end for that matter) This should just have been the bonustrack on the single and they should have given the earbook a 2nd cd with orchestral versions.

Well, my point is that it's a song that didn't receive the attention and bells and whistles (no orchestra for example) that the other songs received, and that's why it indeed feels out of place in the tracklist.
With the orchestra it would have been a very powerful ending track just like A Dark Passage
