Hansi plays bass

#1 Post by brazilian_bard » 05 Jul 2012 21:55

Does anyone know if it's Hansi who plays the bass in the studio recordings?

I'd like to know if it's him, for example, that makes the nice bass intro at "Curse my Name".

I know in the beginning he played alive so he sure recorded too, but today I don't know anymore

He stopped playing bass a couple of albums ago. Since like... IFTOS? I think just before that, he stopped. Not sure though.
I can't think of anything clever to put here.

What is IFTOS?

Not even on the recordings he plays? This is so sad :o but comprehensible.

Imaginations From The Other Side

As for sad: He wasn't a very good bass player, so it's not much of a loss. Not that there is much noticeable bass on any of the records.

They say that there's a broken light for every heart on Broadway.
They say that life's a game, then they take the board away.
They give you masks and costumes and an outline of the story
Then leave you all to improvise their vicious cabaret...

Still the goddamn Batman.

IftOS was the last album he recorded the bass for. You can still see him playing in the video for Bright Eyes^^

The only good bass part in all of Blind Guardian's discography, besides some earlier demos, was at the beginning of the first verse of Ashes To Ashes: "OF LIFE AND INNO-(audioble bass note)-CENCE!"

edit: its actually "OF LIFE (BASS) AND INNOCENCE"
fuck I love that part

its kinda surprising, cause Oliver's "real" band the whole time he was playing with blind guardian (Sieges Even) has very audible and complicated basslines, which is why I love them

The instrumentals have some great bass lines as well. It's helluva dificult to sing and play a different line at the same time, I guess that's why Hansi used to play nothing more but single notes for most of the time.

I'm gonna chek it out. Thanks!

I remembered now a nice bass part in this same song, studio version from SfB. Listen Ashes to Ashes at 0:34, and at 2:30 when he follows the lead guitar. I've always find this really amazing rsrs. By the way this song is amazing. I never understand why they don't play it live.

But this was already nice. At least for me :o
EDIT: It's really difficult. I was watching "Born in a Mourning Hall" clip yesterday, and it makes me think about it. Even he playing just single notes and don't making harder things, Blind Guardian songs are pretty complex, even for the bassist. The single notes are many different notes

Heres Oliver's "real" band Sieges Even

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwDeRV4-Jh8
he even uses harmonics and everything, and theres even bass solos (see 4:14)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiWw5EitqQk Bass louder than the guitars in many parts of this song

And I always thought that Oliver was a mediocre bassist, until I found out about Sieges Even about a year and a half ago, now I know his talents were being supressed. (I find it kind of weird that Blind Guardian wouldnt even make passing mention of new Sieges Even albums coming out during Oliver's time with the band, (3 I believe)

EDIT: I guess Oliver's real band is Rhapsody of Fire now, I keep on forgetting about that.

Wow, the second link you posted is really impressive. I'd say epic.
I loved the song. Very nice melodies and harmonies.
Oliver is very good, so the guitars and vocals.

"OF LIFE (BASS) AND INNOCENCE"
