ATEOT might be my favorite...

#1 Post by arenamaster » 16 Mar 2011 18:23

I can't get over how good it is lately. But we will see. What about you guys?
Each step I take,
May it hurt may it ache
Leads me further
Away from the past!
But as long as I breathe,
Each smile in my bleak face,
I'm on my way to find
Back to the peace of mind!

I would almost agree with you on that point, the diversity is really great, theres always something on there. I never really hear myself say "I dont feel like listening to At The Edge of Time" like i sometimes do for other albums

I found it was a good album, but because I haven't exactly been a metal head for very long and Blind Guardian was one of the first metal bands I got really into, I'm only now discovering a range of awesome other bands  I don't find it much where I'm listening to this album. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, and I still find it magnificent, but for me it never had that ability to be replayed day in day out and I wouldn't tire of it in the slightest. Definitely a step forward and I am happy with it, it's just missing that spark that albums like SFB, NIME and IFTOS had.

There is no way to denies that it was a right album, but because I port't exactly been a metal head for rattling nightlong and Blind Protective was one of the no. mixture bands I got rattling into, I'm exclusive now discovering a ambit of impressive remaining bands  I don't exploit it untold where I'm hearing to this medium. Don't get me dishonorable, I pet it, and I still effort it magnificent, but for me it never had that cognition to be replayed day in day out and I wouldn't fag of it in the slightest. Definitely a block
absent that glint that albums similar SFB, NIME and IFTOS had.

yea thats i guess my one complaint about ATEOT is it feels more like a greatest hits album than an original studio album, it might just be that the first and last song dont really fit with the rest (but are amazing songs nonetheless)

thats a big reason for me too, they don't really 'fit'

Comparing it with a greatest hits album has the negative idea of it being just rehashed riffs and melodies. The songs sound like they come from different eras of the band, but they are totally unique and different (except the 5 second piano outro of Road of no Release), at least to my ears. Now the question comes if an album with such diversity is good or bad. I guess that's totally objective, but my opinion is that it makes no difference one way or the other, as long as the songs feel unique. Now if you take this further and create an album with 3 metal songs, 3 rap songs, and 3 pop songs, I guess it goes too far, but different eras of the same band seems ok to me.

My main gripes with Ateot are 2:

I didn't like the extra orchestral parts of Sacred, they feel like an afterthought (which it is), not augmenting the feeling at all, instead I feel they water down the song's power. I've replaced it with the pre-production version, which contains all the extra lyrics but not the orchestra stuff, and is certainly an improvement over the original.

The second problem is the order of the songs. I don't know how but it could have been better. Around the middle the album loses speed quite a bit. I've never felt with another album that the songs need rearranging, but this one gives me that idea for some reason.

Apart from that I consider it the 3rd best album along with Anato (the first two being Nime and Iftos), but rankings don't really matter much, I listen to all of the discography anyway.

I stand by what I wrote last July.
The Rider Of Rohan wrote:I made up my mind. It's okay by today's metal-standards but it's not a classic album. There's some good stuff, some stuff that's not as great, and mostly stuff that we heard before. So a good album that will last the band another couple of years on the road.

3)ATEOT/ IFTOS

I don't know why anyone would have anything bad to say about ATEOT. For me it's a damn good album from beginning to end.

Myself, my favorite Blind Guardian album changes all the time.
A month ago it was ANATO. Then early last week it was TFTTW. Then later in the week it was ATEOT. Now it's back to NIME.

Hell that's why I love Blind Guardian so much is because there is an album to fit just about any mood you are in.

I think ATEOT the best since NIME. I love all the orchestration of this album. It really becomes slow in the middle (from Curse my Name through War of the Thrones) but i really liked these slow rhythms. They are slow but complex! It seems (for me) an obvious evolution of the band.

This is my top 3:
1 - IFTOS
2 - NIME
3 - ATEOT

A tie between ANATO and NiME for me, with ATEOT and SFB tied for the second place. ATITM and IFTOS in a third place (since they're albums I listen to much less than the others). This is the closest I can come to ranking the albums, they're that great. :D

I like ATEOT a lot, but I agree with previous comments that it loses speed in the middle. Then again, so does ANATO. My Blind Guardian album power rankings:

TFTTW
IFTOS
ATEOT
ANATO
Somewhere Far Beyond (Although it keeps rising every time I listen to it and could eventually go top 3).

Maiden and Minstrel and Sadly Sings Destiny slow down the album there. I'm not a huge fan of either of those songs, particularly because their choruses annoy me for some reason.

One thing that stood out immediately for me in ATEOT was the brilliant drumming. It really is a fantastic album with some debateable songs. Quite often I prefer listening to Control The Divine and Valkyries to the others, which many people say are the worst songs on the album I find actually to be really good.
Just the strangeness of people's differences I suppose :P

Sadly Sings Destiny is my latest 'discovery' off of Anato. I didn't like it as well but it's fucking awesome after you learn the lyrics and sing with it (a plus is that it talks about religion etc, I'm not religious btw but I love Hansi's religious narrations). It's insane if you think about it, I started liking that song since like a year ago and I'm listening to this whole album since release. So that's why rankings don't matter, they might change. I'm not even sure I can write a review of it since I might not have fully evaluated it even after 9 years. Maiden and Minstrel Knight is the worst one for me, it's not bad but it's surely worse than War of the Thrones or Curse My Name (but better than Carry the Blessed Home which is atrocious).
