Man, I had no idea IFTOS was so heavy!

#1 Post by thrashinbatman » 27 Nov 2010 18:57

So, I picked up IFTOS as an early Christmas gift yesterday, and while listening to it in the car, I noticed how heavy this thing is. I mean, yeah, we have the soft acoustic tracks, but the songs that aren't tend to be really heavy. I mean, I'm Alive, for example. That is seriously one of the most pissed off songs I've ever heard, it puts most of the death metal and thrash I've heard to shame. Hansi sounds like he's about to rip someone's throat straight out, and of course, Thomen beating his drums like they owe him money contributes as well. Born in a Mourning Hall and Another Holy War are similar to this, but damn, I'm Alive is just a great song. Anyone else agree?

Do I agree that I'm Alive is a great song? Yes, I do  Although my fav IFTOS song is The Script For My Requiem.
Just keep in mind, this world is sacred.

that is my fave album by BG.all those heavy as fuck guitars combined with Hansi's voice and the bombastic chorus lines are amazing. The only song i don't like too much is "and the story ends".

I'm Alive is not only my favorite BG tune, but it and the album are my gateway Guardian songs...it was my first BG album in 2005 when i first discovered them. Midway through I'm Alive i became a BG fan...something about the pre-chorus "caught in an old cage" vocals just blew my mind.

Would love to have heard it at the Worcester show, though Bright Eyes was a nice consolation.

Hehe, I must have thought stuff like this when I heard for the first times those songs in 1997 or 1998. Damn I feel old now.

Born In A Mourning Hall was my first ever Blind Guardian song. I bought IFTOS randomly because I wanted new music... And that intro riff/melody just blew my mind! BG fan ever since.
I can't think of anything clever to put here.

It's heavy, yeah. But to compare it with, say, Suffocation, seems something of a far stretch to be honest.

Suffocation is heavy, indeed. I wasn't really comparing it with Suffocation, I don't listen to them. That type of death metal is heavier than this, but I'm not sure how to explain what I'm trying to say. THe only way I can think of is that the album feels, I don't know, more genuine in it's heaviness? I'm not sure.

I think 'aggressive' would be a better word to describe it.

Suffocation isn't heavy, it's loud. Highly technical noise. Heaviness is more than just hitting the snaredrum 200 times a minute or playing dissonant chords all the time - heavines grows in your mind. I'd call I'm Alive twice as heavy as Abomination reborn.

I'd say silly is more like it. I listened to the first minute of Abomination Reborn, and it literally made me laugh.

Yeah, I'd say aggressive is the term for it. That's the thing with bands like Suffocation and such; The music may be decent, but a lot of times it's just brutal, it isn't aggressive. It leaves the music sounding kind of dull, I guess. Songs like I'm Alive or Born in a Mourning Hall have that aggressiveness, which makes it feel more heavy than just heavy. That's my take on it.

Pretty much my feelings about the heavy songs on IFTOS as well. And they manage to make them complex and melodic at the same time, which is something few other bands can do. 8)

Maybe you'll find sludge stuff heavier? But to stay within the genre: Any Sympthony X is ten times heavier than IFTOS.

I'm sure there are plenty of Metallica haters here, but when I think heavy, a song like The Thing That Should Not Be comes to mind.

I was also blown away by how heavy this was when I first heard, especially considering I'd just got off SFB, which had it's fair share of heaviness and even might be faster than IFTOS, but was nowhere near as heavy.
Aggressiveness isn't a factor of speed alone, but also overall heaviness and vocal delivery, for example RIO is said to be 210bpm and I'm Alive at 182 , but the latter is far more aggressive.
Generally speaking doom is the heaviest genre, but is not aggressive due to lacking speed.

BTW what do you people consider the most aggressive song of BG?

Yeah, but once again, it isn't too aggressive. But it most definitely is heavy.

Oh, I know. I was just kind of pointing out what I'd call "heavy" and what I'd call "aggressive"

Born in a mourning hall? Of course opinions differ, but a song that starts out with such a happy singable major key lead-guitar, a mid-tempo soft harmonised chorus with no shouting (save "the other siiiiiiiiiiide") and a major key solo?
For me it would probably be Another Holy War or I'm Alive

I get some kind of aggressive rebellion feeling from that song.
Someone cut the strings off

I've to face the truth
But you're right about "such a happy singable major key lead-guitar".

While yeah, those elements are all in the song, I still think it's a contender for the title. I'm Alive and Another Holy War are all more aggressive though.

I agree I think I'm Alive and Another Holy War are more aggressive. BTW don't for forget Script for my Requiem, I think it's also really aggressive. My original question was about all of BG's discography, so do you think does two songs are the most aggressive of IFTOS or of all their discography?

Probably, yeah, save for maybe Voice in the Dark. I can't think of too many other songs that are that in your face, except maybe the beginning of Time What is Time, but the song as a whole isn't too aggressive.

IFTOS is pure awesomeness, no wonder they played every song from in on the live DVD
