This is for the original post.

I'm having a hard time deciding which are my favorite songs! That, and I'm now listening to the album in full for the second time, so it's going to take me some time before I finally decide.

That said, I'd give this album overall an 8 out of 10. Right now it's my favorite cd of theirs, and they're my favorite band. I don't believe in giving perfect scores, so 8 out of 10 is as good as it would get anyway. :D

Well, this is my first shot at ranking the songs on the album. Actually, maybe not. Because I can't tell what my ranking is. I know that Sacred Worlds is on top, and I'm pretty sure Control the Divine is on the bottom, but I'm not sure of the relative positions of RIO, Tanelorn, CMN, and RONR. WoT goes in some unknown place in the top part, and WotT goes slightly below those just listed. Between these and CtD are Valkyries and AVitD, but I'm not sure of their relative positioning either. Dammit. I need to listen to the album all the way through again it seems. I just need to find a good time to do it...

Arwen Arianna wrote:Sacred Worlds: The game version already blew me away, but the real orchestra and the additional parts at the end (the change of singing styles is crazy.. but awesome) really add a lot to it... definitely one of their best songs! 10/10
Tanelorn (Into the Void) Fast, aggressive, killer lyrics and vocals. A good contrast to the epic, orchestral songs. One of the songs I loved immediately. 10/10
Road of No Release One of my favourites so far. The atmosphere created in that song is absolutely enchanting, wonderful and ... very sad. Lots of feelings in that song. Definitely another 10/10
Ride into Obsession Very fast song, probably the most aggressive vocals Hansi has ever done... Very catchy chorus and the lyrics + melodies mirror the topic very well. 10/10
Curse My Name Metal vocals meet medieval ballad. I would have preferred singing instead of rough vocals (--> check out the demo version. The singing is divine!), but that does not change the fact that this song is absolutely amazing! The "Remove his crown" part makes it one of my absolute favourites! I have to learn how to tapdance... 10/10
Valkyries The beginning and the end would make stones weep. Even me. All in all a wonderful song, but there are some harmonies in the chorus I simply dislike. That's why it only gets 8.5/10 from me... I might change my opinion later on, though.
Control the Divine Fascinating topic, great lyrics, contains some outstanding parts, but unfortunately a rather weak chorus as well :( Again some harmonies I'm not too fond of.. 8,5/10
War of the Thrones This has become one of my favourite ballads, it's perfect!
But I like the single version a little better... 9.5/10 for the album version, 10/10 for the single version ;)
A Voice in the Dark Perfect from the first to the last note. 10/10
Wheel of Time I have absolutely no words to describe the brilliance of this song! it's just.. WOW! I kneel to Blind Guardian and humbly bow my head before them... 100/10!

All in all the album gets 10/10 from me...
After many listens, I'll agree with Arwen's ratings. All the songs seem equally excellent to me except Valkyries and Control the Divine which I like a bit less. Although comparing Control the Divine vs Valkyries I like maybe a little more the first one, though this isn't settled yet. I feel if Control the Divine had a bit more prog stuff I would have liked it as much as Road of No Release, but not sure about that. I also like a bit more the guitar version of War of the Thrones than the piano version too. Special kudos go to Wheel of Time, a most unique song to the album and Blind Guardian in general, along with the first-time use of the orchestra, it should get a 10.5, or the 100 Arwen gave .
Now I'm riding through the air
Going to where no one dares
On the way I cross the line forevermore.
For once in life, I do not care
Nothing matters, now I dare
On the ride I'll cross the line
Forever to be free

Okay, after another listen I have a loose list, subject to constant shifting. :) Remember that some of these are actually really close or on par, especially in the top 6. Really, 3-6 are just a big cluster.

1. Sacred Worlds
2. Wheel of Time
3. Curse My Name
4. Road of No Release
5. Tanelorn (Into the Void)
6. Ride into Obsession
7. War of the Thrones
8. Valkyries
9. A Voice in the Dark
10. Control the Divine

Why is Control the Divine so criminally underrated? :( This one's got some of the most interesting riffing on the whole album (just listen to the second verse), a great melodic intro and this awesome chorus - I think I'll have to write a new ranking soon.

Don't get me wrong, I like the song and it has definitely grown on me, but it just isn't as strong to me as the rest of the album. The second verse is indeed amazing, but I found the intro to be one of the least interesting on the album. It doesn't hook me in as quickly as the others. This sounds harsher than I mean it, but it almost strikes me as an ANatO song that didn't make it onto that album (although I might like it better than WfaA and The Soulforged). For me, it certainly doesn't compare to my top 6 songs on the album. It's quite a good song, but it is not brilliant (although I may change my stance on this later).

I'll change the rank of Valkyries to a 9.3/10. It needs some time to grow, but it is definitely one of the highlights here.

I would give the whole album a total 10 if it was the acoustic WotT on the album instead of piano version. So, only 9.9 :(

9. A Voice In The Dark - 10/10
10. Wheel Of Time - 10/10

A Voice in the Dark and Wheel of Time are my favourite songs on the album; both great in different ways. War of the Thrones is a great ballad, then again maybe I'm a bit too biased being a huge Son of Ice and Fire fan. At first I thought I preferred the demo version, but the keyboards really grew on me and they're really haunting at the beginning. Sacred Worlds is trully epic, I love the added instrumental. Tanelorn was a great return to the good ol' days.

After a bazillion hearings, here's my take at the album (despite the ranking, I like all the songs, so no bad votes here).

01) Road of no release
02) Wheel of time
03) Curse my Name
04) War of the thrones
05) Valkyries
06) Sacred words
07) Voice in the dark
08) Control the divine
09) Tanelorn
10) Ride into obsession

All in all I believe the entire project is woven so amazingly it should be considered a concept album based not on themes but music. In this, AtEOT goes to eleven.

New to forums been listening to the band for about 5 years now. Anyway here's how I rank the album:
01) Curse my Name
02) Wheel of Time
03) Valkyries
04) War of the Thrones
05) Sacred Worlds
06) Voice in the Dark
07) Tanelorn
08) Ride into Obsession
09) Road of No Release
10) Control the Divine

Not saying the bottom tracks are weak though. This album is actually immense!

Hi everyone,

time for updating. For the next evaluation I'm going to create some nice visualizations.

Feel free to add or revise your opinion. :)

However, please don't consider only how you like the songs now. Please take into account how you liked them overall since album release. Example: A good song is listened to often; hence, after years, it might appear weaker than it is.
Furthermore, please don't look at the result above before you decide as it may influence you.

Yes, if you want to, kill me. Objectively, Wheel of Time may be a great song. But this song bored the hell out of me from the very first listen. Maybe it grows (like Silence), though I've given up hope now (after about 30 listens).
I prefer it fast and without frills :).

I'm gonna rate each song, considering how much the songs touched my fan heart. All I could talk about the songs was already spoken here.

1. Sacred - 10 (beautiful and deep)
2. Talenorn - 10 (fuck yeah - Andre's leads on this song are amazing)
3. Road of no Release - 10 (oh my God where am I? A good song to take you away. To somewhere really far beyond)
4. Ride into Obsession - 3 (I just can't handle this song)
5. Curse my Name - 10 (I love how all those instruments sounds togheter)
6. Valkyries - 7 (dense, frozen leads, NiME style)
7. Control the Divine - 8 (I love the mix with acoustic and electric guitars. NiME style too)
8. War of the Thrones - 10 (amazing beautiful tale. Sung. I prefer the album version, without those excessive acoustic guitars)
9. Voice in the Dark - 6 (just a nice song, not bad nor special)
10. Wheel of Time - 10 (fucking amazing song)

Thank you for your rankings/ratings. The evaluation will be at most as good as our contributions.

I would like to share the results but I noticed that I can't upload (small) images to the forum. Maybe I'll find a way to circumvent this problem in a few days or weeks.

Problem solved, but it's late now, I haven't the time to explain the results today. This delay is not so bad: perhaps someone hasn't visited the forum this week but would like to participate before evaluation.

However, here's a current overview.
Just a glimpse, it'll be explained later.

There are interesting connections between the songs.

I recommend to view the images in full screen; otherwise the contrast is unpleasant.

EDIT: I'm still on the ball. I like playing with details, so I'm revising the figures and the text.

Hello everybody,

ATEOT is an amazing album. I like it very much.
Nearly all songs have a similar high quality, thus a decision was difficult.
Anyhow, here is my vote:

1: Sacred Worlds
2: War of Thrones
3: Curse my Name
4: Wheel of Time
5: Road of No Release
6: Control the Divine
7: Ride into Obsession
8: Valkyries
9: A Voice in the Dark
10: Tanelorn

The evaluation:

The distribution of our opinions.
The vertical, black lines denote the song averages.

Connections between the songs. Let's call it the “circles diagram”.
Example 1: There is a (linear) connection between Tanelorn and A Voice in the Dark. Look at this picture. The brown line shows the linear trend; it rises: If someone likes one of the two songs more than the rest of us, it's probable that he/she likes the second song more than the rest of us, too. Therefore, there is a *blue* slice in the corresponding position in the circles diagram.

Example 2: There is a (linear) connection between Valkyries and Ride into Obsession. Have a look. The brown line shows the linear trend; it *declines*: If someone likes one of the two songs more than the rest of us, it's probable that he/she likes the other song *less* than the rest of us. Thus, there is a *red* slice in the corresponding position in the circles diagram.

Example 3: There is *no* linear connection between Wheel of Time and Sacred Worlds. Look at this picture. Both are above average, but there is a cloud without linear trend, hence there is *no* slice in the corresponding position in the circles diagram.

Similarities of the songs.
The three — statistically — most noticeable properties of the songs:
1) How much are the songs liked in average? Denoted by vertical position.

2) There is a property which can be detected statistically, but I cannot name it. Half of us like this property, half of us do not like it. Tanelorn and A Voice in the Dark have this property. Road of No Release and Control the Divine have the opposite of this property. The likers of the property shall be called “the dark voices in tanelorn”, and the dislikers shall be known as “the unreleased in hell”.
Denoted by horizontal position.

3) There is another property that splits us in two halves. Curse My Name and Valkyries have this property. Ride into Obsession has the opposite of this property. The likers of the property are “the cursed valkyries”, the dislikers are simply “the riders”.
Denoted by colour and orientation of the ovals.
Note: If someone likes or dislikes this property, he/she does not necessarily feel that the songs are of similar quality. It only means that the songs are shifted upwards or downwards in his/her ranking.

Furthermore, the colour of a song name indicates how controversial its quality is. The colour range: dark green (hardly controversial) - bright green - yellow - bright red - dark red (controversial).

Who likes which property?
In the left half: The likers of the property mentioned in 2), i.e. “the dark voices in tanelorn”.
In the right half: The *dis*likers of the property mentioned in 2), i.e. “the unreleased in hell”.

In the lower half: The likers of the property mentioned in 3), i.e. “the cursed valkyries”.
In the upper half: The *dis*likers of the property mentioned in 3), i.e. “the riders”.

There are further properties that split us in likers and dislikers. A third such property is depicted by colour.

Additionally, rankings are displayed. An example shall illustrate their meaning: If the name of a person is in the lower right corner and is red, it is probable that his/her ranking is roughly similar to the red ranking in the lower right corner.
These ranking estimates are very rough. The actual ranking depends on the exact position and colour of the name and on some properties that are not depicted in this diagram.
