Favorite Blind Guardian ballad

#1 Post by jophelerks » 04 Jul 2009 23:55

From best to worst, in my opinion:
The Bard's Song-In the Forest (no more need be said)
A Past and Future Secret (amazing)
Harvest of Sorrow (also amazing)
tie b/w LOTR and Skalds and Shadows (both REALLY good)
The Eldar (really good)

D'uh, Bard's Song :P
"There's a time when a man needs to fight and a time when he needs to accept that his destiny's lost, the ship has sailed and that only a fool will continue. The truth is I've always been a fool"

A slight call afar is tempting me, like a whisper sweet or an awful scream; I cannot ignore what I've always been, I'm leaving again - one last time? in my little kingdom I can be what I really wanted to be... The wanderer

Yeah, I guess it's not really much of a question. We'll see if everyone else sees it that way.

Skalds and Shadows ftw. The Bard's Song is second, but I don't really like the rest.

+1

While bard´s song and the others are really really great in every way, nothing beats all the king´s horses.. It´s just so god damn beautiful!

Edit: I voted Bard´s song - in the forest though it´s only second imo

Oh, yeah. You're right. Can't believe I forgot that one, that's one of my favorites. If anyone wants to redo it with AtKH, they're welcome to. I may later but for now I don't really have much time to.

Let´s also not forget "Carry the blessed home" and maybe "black chamber" if that one counts

If you add Carry the Blessed Home, you might also include The Maiden and the Minstrel Knight... a semi-ballad of sorts

Maiden and the Minstrel Knight would probably be fine. Carry the Blessed Home might be pushing it a little, if I put that on there I think I might as well put on songs like Blood Tears or Dead Sound of Misery, so I'm not sure about that one.

Oh, and about Black Chamber, that's definitely not happening. That's basically a throw-away track.

49 seconds or whatever it is? What's the point of even making a song that length? If I want a song, make me a real song. Black Chamber is a filler. There are transition tracks on NIME longer than BC.

:P there's a longer (orchestral) version
it's just beautiful. But too short :( I admit that...

APAFS

i find the studio version of the bard's song somewhat empty, it loses the magic of actually singing it live.
during a concert, the bard's song would be my number one though, if only for the magic. but studio it lack a lot of that magic.

You're right, the orchestral's better. I never gave it a listen before because I was never a big fan of the original, but I listened to it and it's not bad. Still not something I would put on a list of ballads, but yeah...I'll probably get around to making a new and improved version of the poll sometime today, just seems a shame to make everyone re-vote though...

I'm going to have to listen to them all again if I'm going to vote... so tough to choose.

I choose The Lord Of The Rings because of the Mordor part. 8)

I'd go for All the King's Horses, too, but since it isn't in the list, I voted The Eldar. Nothing beats Hansi's singing in that, and the piano accompaignement kicks serious ass!

True, the singing in The Eldar is outstanding. (though my mom mistook it for a female voice...)
